Tony Tardio - My Italian Story
T ony is better known for his radio work on 3AW but last week he spoke about his family’s origins in Italy and in Australia. The following are some of the main points of his talk:
l Tony said his family came from a region called Puglia - the calf muscle of the ‘boot’ of Italy. l They came from a little town called San Marco in Lamis which in Latin means ‘the swamp’. lT he population was 15,000. It has been for many years and will be for many more said Tony. lB eing in a valley ..there was water there. For centuries people survived.. working on their plots of land...making just enough to get by. l In 1930’s Mussolini invaded North Africa trying to re-establish the Roman Empire...Sanctions were imposed on Italy and the poor towns were hit the hardest. Second World War made things worse. lD espite enormous poverty small Italian village life is pretty colourful, rich in tradition, culture and strong family values. Even the Italian poorest family tries to eat well. l In Italy they have a thing called ‘bella figura’...Loosely translated means good impression. So no matter how poor you are you make sure you have at least one good pair of shoes and one set of good clothes. lT he poverty caused 4,000 people from San Marco in Lamis to leave in the years after the war. lS ome went to America...most came to Australia...and most to Melbourne; lO ne of those was his Dad, Paolo who arrived in 1949. His Dad was the second last of a family of 8 - the last boy. lH is Dad went to school for only a couple of weeks. His father needed him to look after the animals. That decision made by economic necessity which left him unable to read or write in any language. l Despite Italy not giving him and educationhis father was conscripted to fight for the King in the second world war at 21 years of age. lF ather was in Libya when he was captured in 1942. Taken to South Africa as prisoner of war. He wrote no letters as he couldn’t read or write. He was too embarrassed to say anything so no one knew whether he was dead or alive. lA fter two years a priest arrived at the camp. He took down all the details of the prisoners which were broadcast on Italian radio. In San Marco they then knew Paolo was alive. l In 1946 after the war ended he went back to Italy and met Tony’s mother walking home from church. They courted and eventually married had his older brother and in 1949 found themselves at Station Pier. Two months later Robert Menzies was sworn in as Prime Minister.
lH is
Dad worked all over the place and slept in shared accommodation. While the other guy worked at night he had the bed. lD esperate to make money to buy a house for the family he went to Leeton to grow vegetables. But in 1952 Leeton was hit by a massive flood which wiped out everything including his dad’s 3 years of work. This resulted in it being 7 years before he could get his mother and brother out to Australia. lH is mother arrived to a small house Northcote. lB rother Joe born in 1956 during the Olympics. lT ony born in 1959. lH is mother in 1961 left all her family in Melbourne as she had done in Italy. Dad wanted to grow bananas. Family moved to Crossmaglen in Qld. Farm house on dead end road. Couldn’t see the top of the mountain range because of low cloud. lD ad bought a farm with cousin. Squabbles started. House divided into two. Lived there for 3 years then the farm was sold and he bought another 20 miles up the road in Moonee Beach. 50 years on cousins still own it. l It was in Moonee Beach that Tony developed his love of radio. It was his escape from the plantation life. He would listen to the cricket but Italians aren’t supposed to like cricket. At school he spoke Australian and at home he spoke their quaint dialect. lH is sisters were born in Nth NSW. lT hey moved back to Melbourne in 1973. Tony did his HSC and then University. He worked at local Safeway and got on the microphone every chance he got. lH e guessed he had always wanted to be in radio. In 1982 he got a job in Alice Springs then 3MP in 1982. Started reading Breakfast News in 1985 g etting there at 4am. 1986 reported on Commonwealth Games in Scotland. He got 4 days off so went to Italy. Saw a different Italy than the one his parents had described. The poor struggling Italy - now magnificent especially Rome. Visited his family home in San Marco and had wonderful experiences there. l In 1996 he moved over to 3AW with Steve Price, Neil Mitchell, Rex Hunt etc and of course the one he admired the most Derryn Hinch. lT ony spoke more about his family and then fielded questions from the audience. This just gives you brief insight into the journey his family has been on since leaving Italy and making a life in Australia.

Tim talks up inspiration

He was diagnosed with depression at age 12, and while it never leaves him, he has learnt to cope. “I really struggled at school, I struggled to apply myself, as I didn’t understand what I was being taught and how it would af fect my life,” Mr Deeks said. “I felt I was stupid.”

BRIGHTON
INSPIRATION is our most powerful tool, Brighton entrepreneur Tim Deeks says. The 20 year-old runs his own online business, is setting up another company and is Brighton Rotary’s youngest ever inductee. “I admire their leadership and guidance; it is absolutely golden,” Mr Deeks said.
In May this year we had the very successful BMW Brighton Lunch and the proceeds went to the Cathy Freeman Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Monash. Last week Geoff Bentley who was the Chairman for the Event had the pleasure of presenting a cheque for $9500 to Nickie Barlow Executive Officer of Ronald McDonald House Monash Chapter. Nickie originally worked with Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch which was affected by the earthquake and eventually came to Australia. She thanked the organisers of the Lunch for their generous cheque and also thanked the club for inviting her along to the Italian Night which she enjoyed very much. Next year we will see some well know personalties joining the Lunch and we will also have Brighton BMW as a major sponsor again.
He said he joined Rotary to give back and also contribute to beyondblue by speaking about mental illness. A portion of sales from Mr Deek’s online men’s fashion sitego to beyondblue. His next foray is a company that organises confidence-building talks for schools and other groups.

IVAN’S HACKERS
Welcome to all visiting Rotarians & Guests The Club meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at Milanos Hotel, The Esplanade, Brighton Beach.
Rotary Grace
Saturday, 26 Oct - HIGHLIGHTS In a repeat of last week we had a record 15 players - 7 at our home Brighton course in week 5 of The Hackers’ Spring Handicap Competition and 8 taking up the challenge against the Hookers (our ladies version of the Hackers) at their Sandringham course. We were pleased to welcome new guests Geoff Bloore, Mark Fowler and Peter Siemens to our Hackers world.
“For good food, good fellowship and the privilege of service, we give you thanks O Lord.”
Ron dominated at Brighton winning handicap honors , taking out the long drive with a huge hit and finishing it off nicely with a great putt to get the only birdie of the day. Geoff had a great putt sinking a 50m one from off the green, he also took out the off the stick honors.
Rotary Toast
Kavin who got nearest the pin last week and did it again. Tony keeping up a rapidly growing tradition hit the water on the 7th. Meanwhile at Sandringham the Hookers (obviously with a lot of local knowledge and using their feminine mystique) soundly beat the Hackers on the day.
“To Australia, The Queen of Australia, Rotary International & the Rotary Club of Brighton.”
Ken played very well having the men’s best score , the nearest the pin and long drive. Robyn Foster had best score of the day and nearest the pin. Christine Nicholson took out the women’s long drive honors.
