ANNUAL REPORT
2012
Building community. Providing a home. Ending bullying. Preventing suicide.
The Long Island GLBT Services Network is an association of non-profit organizations serving Long Island’s GLBT community throughout the lifespan: Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), The Long Island GLBT Community Center (The Center), and Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders – Long Island (SAGE-LI). April 2012 – LIGALY’s Got Big Talent (LGBT) Show Contestants
Together, each organization works to end homophobia and transphobia on Long Island, to provide a home and safe space for the GLBT community, and to advocate for equality.
In working together, each organization shares resources, and thus reduces overhead costs and expenses. Each organization shares administration, programming space, and fundraising efforts making for an efficient system, and ensuring the money raised through grants, donations, and special events are maximized providing the greatest benefit to all of Long Island’s GLBT community.
May 2012 – The Center’s Professionals Mixer
The organizations of The Long Island GLBT Services Network operate Long Island’s only two Community Centers, The Center at Bay Shore which opened in 2002, and The Center at Garden City, which opened in 2011. Fiscal Year 2012 was a year of marking history for The Network and Long Island’s GLBT community.
August 2011 – SAGE-LI’s Meschutt Beach Party
A Year of Marking
History
During the 2012 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012), The Network and its organizations celebrated history while making its own. The Network also served more people with more programs than ever in its history.
The Network Makes History by Opening the 2nd GLBT Community Center on Long Island The Long Island GLBT Services Network joined the elite ranks of the small number of GLBT community centers successful enough to operate more than one physical site when it opened The Center at Garden City in October 2011. The 8,800 sq.-ft. facility tripled the amount of space for The Network’s organizations allowing for an increase in programs and increased access for GLBT people in Nassau County.
STOPPING HIV LIGALY and The Center significantly expanded its HIV outreach, testing, and prevention services this year. LIGALY and The Center provided 225 HIV tests so that more gay and bisexual men are aware of their status, and launched new education and prevention programs to help stop the spread of HIV.
The Network Celebrates the Passage of Marriage Equality in New York State with a Big Wedding The Long Island GLBT Services Network celebrated and marked the passage of New York State’s Marriage Equality Bill by organizing a mass group wedding ceremony for 57 couples. The Network partnered with local catering hall, Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage State Park, to offer a complimentary wedding for the couples and 1,000 guests. It was the largest same-sex wedding ceremony in New York State.

The Network Establishes and Receives Charter for the Nation’s First PTA Focused on the Needs of GLBT Youth The Network established the Long Island Gay Parent Teacher Student Association (LI G-PTSA) as the nation’s first PTA group focused on the needs of GLBT youth. The LI G-PTSA received its charter on Thursday, April 19, 2012. The LI G-PTSA brings together parents, teachers, and students dedicated to affecting change in their schools so that GLBT youth can reach their full potential.

MORE VISIBILITY IN SCHOOLS
LIGALY’s annual
“National Coming Out Day School Awareness Campaign” was implemented in 61 Long Island schools and religious institutions engaging more than 60,000 students, teachers, parents, and other community members to take a stand against the bullying of GLBT youth.
LIGALY Launches New Program for GLBT Jewish Youth and their Families: The Aleph Project LIGALY launched The Aleph Project in 2011-2012 with generous support from UJA Federation of New York. The Aleph Project
March 2012 – First GLBT Passover Seder at The Center at Garden City
was designed from the same program model of LIGALY’s Safe Schools Initiative to help Jewish institutions on Long Island create safer and more supportive spaces for GLBT Jewish youth. The Project also works to re-connect GLBT Jewish youth and young adults to Jewish life and experience. In its first year, The Aleph Project helped start the first gay-straight alliance (GSA) club in a Long Island synagogue. March 2012 – First GLBT Passover Seder at The Center at Garden City
IGNITING ACTIVISM The annual Long Island GLBT Conference at Stony Brook University brought together more than 400 youth, teachers, counselors, and other community members to gain skills and knowledge about creating change in their own schools and communities so that more people are trained as agents and catalysts of change to create safer spaces for GLBT people.
COMMUNITY CENTERS In addition to opening The Center at Garden City, The Network celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Center at Bay Shore. Now efforts have begun to open a third community center on the East End of Long Island so that more people have access to a safe space in response to community need.
The Network Organizes the Long Island Pride Parade and Festival for the First Time For the first time, The Network coordinated the annual Long Island Pride Parade and Festival in June, increasing attendance from 5,000 to more than 11,000 so that the visibility of the GLBT community grows throughout Long Island. Although the Parade had been running for 21 years, the allvolunteer Parade Committee voted to hand-off responsibility for the event to The Network so that the event could be taken the next level. The Network extends its thanks and warmest gratitude to all those volunteers who sustained the Parade over the years, and is proud to serve the community with this terrific event.

community members attended the
2012 Long Island Pride Parade & PrideFest! BUILDING BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS The Network’s Partners in Pride program continues to build relationships and partnerships with a variety of corporations and businesses through its annual Long Island GLBT Business Directory and annual Long Island GLBT Expo. In doing so, the GLBT community remains a priority among business leaders and institutions.
