Why choose building automation?

Building automation, a concept in tune with time Connected, anytime, anywhere! Who could have imagined just 10 years ago, that one day we would be carrying our music, our photos and our e-mails in our pockets? Today, we contact our relatives with a single click and we surf unrestrictedly on the web, in the train or on the beach. Smartphones and digital tablets have become our digital alter egos. They have also become the link to our home. We can see real time images of what is happening in our home & its management is at our fingertips.

We are all senior citizens of the future By 2050, the number of older persons in the world will exceed the number of young for the first time in history. In light of this, institutions are taking the necessary measures to encourage home support. Moreover, we are going to be living better and longer at home; as long as our home is able to constantly adapt to its inhabitants !

10

In this sense, an electrical installation that is able to evolve is a real asset: adding functions, adapting the control, promoting communication, etc.

Energy performance: an issue in the short term During 2012 Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar, the United Nations committed to reduce greenhouse gases emissions by at least 18% below 1990 levels from 2013 to 2020. Buildings represent 40% of total primary energy consumption. To reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and limit our energy consumption in the coming years, we need to

design and construct highperformance buildings to save energy. A real challenge for the industry. The technology to achieve these goals already exists! While most of these technologies have a passive role, in contrast the electrical

installation is a driving element in managing energy performance in housing. Through solutions such as energy dashboards, building automation systems and automatic management of lighting and heating, it is possible to manage energy consumption actively and significantly.

KNX system architecture

Our world is changing fast and we are becoming more comfortable with technology. It is quite natural that electrical devices in our homes such as lights, air conditioners, heaters and window shutters should follow the same trend. This is especially true for office blocks, warehouses and factory facilities, hotels and leisure facilities, in which conventional installation needs to be supplemented by the modern-day state of the art technology. As a result, conventional electrical installation is becoming more and more technically complicated, costly and complex. Conventional Electrical Installation: Mains

In Conventional Electrical installation, all electrical devices are turned ON or OFF, via the power (mains & neutral) cables. In this type of installation all devices work independently from each other. For any modification, recabling is required. This system works on 230V - 250V AC, due to this conventional wiring is not safe. To control load from multiple place requires multiple controllers and one or more cables to be installed. Limitations or disadvantages of conventional system

Electrical Installation system with Bus Technology Order no. Packing and convenience Higher demands placed on the security, flexibility of electrical installations combinePacking unit unit with need to minimize energy requirements have led to the development of home and building management system. The greater demands of modern day state of the art technology are difficult to meet technically & commercially using conventional installation techniques. Consequently, it makes sense right from the planning phase to consider alternative techniques such as Bus technology e.g. Hager Tebis KNX system. This technology overcomes all demerits of conventional electrical system and opens a new world of possibilities. It is the installation of two separate circuits, a supply circuit to distribute energy and the control circuit to carry information and instructions.

Order no.

This installation concept brings the following benefits: • The amount of cabling compared to conventional installation technology is considerably reduced • Bus devices are arranged in decentralized way • Make modifications easier. • Make the electrical installation more reliable, reducing the chance of electrocution. • Tailoring the switch commands to ensure greater user comfort.

Advantages of Bus based automation system: • The supply cabling is simplified The only loads are connected with Low voltage supply and the control for these loads (by push button, thermostats, sensors) are connected to the bus circuit. • Freedom to assign functions and applications An electrical installation based on the bus control concept, makes it possible to assign an ON/OFF, Dimming, rising or lowering of blind function without changing the wiring.

KNX- the worldwide standard for building automation What is KNX?

Over 20 years ago a number of home and building control manufacturers recognized the need for a single language for building control systems to allow each manufacturer‘s equipment to successfully communicate with the others, and so an independent organization was established, known as KONNEX association to introduce and manage a global standard for products. 20 years on that standard, now known as KNX, has more than 300 compliant manufacturers producing over 7,000 products. KNX is the only worldwide Standard for all applications in home and building control, ranging from lighting and shutter control to various security systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, monitoring, alarming, water control, energy management, metering as well as household appliances, audio and lots more. The technology can be used in new as well as in existing homes and buildings.

Evolution of KNX KNX Association has been set up in 1999 with headquarters in Brussels as the merger between three former European associations promoting intelligent homes and buildings, i.e. : - BCI (France) promoting the Batibus system - EIB Association (Belgium) promoting the EIB system - European Home Systems Association (Holland) promoting the EHS system

KNX Association has the following goals:

• Remote controls integration Adding radio or infrared receivers connected to the bus combines the technological benefits. The bus, radio, infrared combination makes it possible to act on all receivers controlled by the control bus using the remote control keys.

- Definition of a new truly open standard ‘KNX’ for intelligent homes and buildings; - Establishing the KNX Trademark as a token for quality and multi-vendor interworking; - Establishing KNX as the European standard.

• Grouping of instructions One order (from a push-button...) can control a set of lights or other loads or both at once (a scenario).

As long as needed, KNX Association also offers support for the legacy systems Batibus, EIB and EHS, including certification according to these previous standards. As EIB is backward compatible to KNX, most devices can be labeled both with the KNX as well as the EIB logo

• Flexibility The building electrical installation can be modified or configured, without changing the low voltage wiring. • SELV Safety extra low voltage-no electrical hazard. 14

KNX medium: Due to the flexibility of the KNX technology, a KNX installation can easily be adapted to the changing circumstances of the user. It is also possible to implement KNX on the existing 230 V cable (“Powerline transmission medium”), on radio (“KNX Radio Frequency transmission medium”) and on Ethernet (“KNX over IP”). Via appropriate gateways, transmission of KNX control signal is also possible on other media, e.g. optical fiber. Medium

The architecture of a KNX building automation installation is based on an original principle, separation of the power and control circuits. This approach provides a distinct advantage: the possibility to change the installation at any time.

Modify and enrich Unlike traditional systems, a KNX installation does not physically link the control with the function. All the controls are grouped on the bus (wired or wireless). The goal is to release the potential restricted by command/function association.

The benefits: - time savings - scalability of installations without additional work

Integrating linked universes In a KNX installation, other features such as intrusion and technical alarms, video surveillance, multi-room functions, videophones or even home maintenance systems can be easily integrated via dedicated gateways.

The benefits: - enrichment of capabilities - access to other markets - business development

Changing the configuration or adding new control points is then achieved simply and without additional work.

Determining the required supply capacity in a KNX installation Tebis KNX bus devices of a system are fed through the bus line from central power. This power supply is mounted in the distribution Board (DB). The bus supply must under all circumstances deliver the power to all bus devices that are connected to that line. The need for more functionality is more power consumption and at the same time, it is necessary use of the white / yellow pair of KNX cable for an extra power supply undesirable. This means that the maximum number of components to a power supply does not go by the old rule of thumb (max. 32 units in one 320mA power supply or up to 64 at a 640mA power supply). The capacity of the power supply can be calculated by counting all KNX devices current consumption together. As a safety margin, the KNX power supply in new installation about 80% may be used, the remaining 20% is future enlargements or for the collection of intensive communication. Cat. Ref. No.

ETS - A unique manufacturer independent tool Packing unit

ETS means Engineering Tool Software; a manufacturer independent configuration tool Software to design and configure intelligent home and building control installations with the KNX system. KNX system and ETS (Engineering Tool Software): The ETS software is designed so that products from different manufacturers can use the same control screens for connecting and programming. There are of course differences, because not every product has the same possibilities, but there is no problem. All basic functions are to be found at the same place. This way programming is called ETS within KNX System mode and it is the most comprehensive form that KNX standard can offer. The installer connects all products to each other via KNX cable & programmed by computer using ETS (Engineering Tool Software) software. This means: all unique addresses and use it with all desired functions in each product number. The System mode provides access to many functions. Because everything is free of choice, there are many possibilities. A solution for large installations. This is a computer program that is made to connect KNX devices. It run’s on Windows computer. The computer is connected to KNX interface module through COM port or USB ports. The interface module is reconnected to KNX bus and allows for converting the signals from computer to the bus.

The ETS software is managed and developed by the KNX Association. ETS software is no t Hager product and not Hager purchased. The easiest way to order the software and a license through www. knx.org (from KNX online shop). ETS is protected and is therefore supplied with a release code (license) based on the hardware of the PC. After installing the program works 30 days without code. At that time, the license can be requested via the ETS. After the payment is received by KNX, the user receives a release code (license) for ETS. What licenses of ETS are there? There are various licenses for ETS software. For companies with multiple programmers, it is also possible to have a head and sublicense to buy. The sub license is cheaper, has everything to programming, but cannot print and export. In practice it is often the main license on the computer will be in the office and the laptop with the sublicense can be carried for installation on site. A sublicense may only be purchased if there is one main license. For schools and institutions can also use ETS trial licenses for training purposes. These licenses are like the limited sublicense, but meet perfectly in training. Language support in ETS ETS software supports several languages, including English. Databases of products (product database) are available in the English.

Product recognition in ETS: application Because with ETS (Engineering Tool Software) various KNX brands can work. In the System mode you have to deal with 3 parts: - System software ETS: Purchase it from KNX association - Product Databases / application software: free download from the manufacturers - Project Files: are created by the user For each KNX product delivers application software by manufacturer. This ETS file that has information what the product can and how the data in the product should be loaded. An ETS application software can identified by the file extension: “VD” Because ETS continually developed, new possibilities. In order to use the application software, ETS should be able to read it. In table bellow shows file extension with supportable ETS version. ETS Version File name extension

Connection

(see table above for ordering information) It is absolutely essential to provide a separate power supply for the Crystal Ball. The corresponding interface or the relay is connected directly to the terminals of the Crystal Ball. After system startup, devices are controlled by pressing the sensor surface. Depending on the system the connected interface may not be fully utilised by the Crystal Ball. Any remaining interface channels can be used for other applications.

Berker TS Sensor feather touch With the Berker TS Sensor a gentle touch of the plain surface is all that is needed to activate lights, blinds, shutters etc. Completely reduced to a simple smooth surface, this control concept is ideal for especially sophisticated projects. In the variant with thermostat and integrated elegant „dark design“ display, the TS Sensor becomes a convenient room control device. • Suitable for installation bus systems and relay circuits • Electronics are positioned directly on the backside of the glass plate for exceptional switching reliability • Super-flat design enables on-the-wall installation • LEDs can be used to show readiness for operation and to display switching states • Completely smooth surface made possible by screw-free fastening • Labelling on the backside for perfect protection Design and labelling concept in three variants • Basic: delivered without labelling and symbols • Customised: pre-defined symbols, colours and labelling can be selected via Web Configurator; for further information, see www.berker.de/ts-sensor Note: configuration cannot be changed once the order has been placed • Manufacture: individual design with free selection of fonts, colours and symbols. BASIC The product variants of the Berker TS Sensor can be ordered as a catalogue model with no printing with a choice of three background colours: polar white, aluminium and black.

Order no. Order no. Packing Connection unit The glass sensor is connected to the interfaces of the respective systems via an adapter using a ribbon cable (see information for ordering and use). The separate power supply must be connected to the respective adapter.

optional: ADAPTER RING for antidismantling protection and "shadow gap"

CUSTOMISED The TS Sensor can be designed in a multitude of ways to meet even the most varied customer needs. The innovative product concept enables the reverse of the glass plate to be printed on with lettering and symbols to indicate the operating functions. In this location they are optimally protected against dirt, wear and damage. This concept means, however, that the planned functions for each control panel must be defined in cooperation with the customer before ordering. Once ordering has taken place, the selected labelling and symbols can no longer be changed, because printing is carried‚ out only once at the time of production.

The proven benefits of switch inserts at a glance.

• High-quality supporting ring

•N o wrong inserts on construction site • M inimal stockholding • Lasting customer satisfaction Outstanding functionality and easy handling are what set the switch inserts apart. The tried and tested modular design and extremely flat switching angle of only 3.5° make the switch appear very flat on the wall. To ensure an easy installation, the concept of the Flexolift claws was introduced. The claws are flush fitting, and are forced automatically back into position when released. On the back of the switch is a laser engraving of the circuit diagram, the graphical symbol, the article number and the conductor stripping length. A cable guard around the claw screws prevents damage to the conductors. Specially-moulded lever release catches reduce the effort required to release the conductors. An optional neon lamp unit can be firmly and palpably clipped into the supporting ring. The rockers are precisely guided with the help of mounts on the switch insert, making the switch pleasant to use.

• Optimal supporting ring design

marked for precise alignment at place of installation

• 3.5° Switching angle

for a flatter appearance

• Modular design

As the inventor of the module system, Berker is the only manufacturer to have retained its philosophy unchanged right through to the present. Even years later, it is still possible to adapt the switch to a new interior design. The actual inserts are left in the wall. Only the surfaces are replaced. Even if a control switch or illuminated switch is desired, the switch insert always remains the same. For you that means:

sturdy, no sharp edges, with additional screwing options for easy mounting on soft surfaces

suitable for all rocker types

• Large clearance around the claw screw

with cross-head screws

• Variable 4-pin mount

for precise seating of rockers

• Clip-in neon/glow lamp unit

• Moulded lever release catches

Special considerations for installation • For flush-mounted installation a centre-to-centre dimension of 91 mm is recommended. In order to maintain the appropriate distance during plastering, flush-mounting boxes from Kaiser with snap-tunnel supports must be used. Their distance can be set easily and optimally using a spacer gland (order no. 1887). • For hollow-wall installation, we also recommend a centre-to-centre dimension of 91 mm. • Due to its diameter of 84.5 mm, the porcelain frame cannot be installed with a Serie 1930 surface-mounted frame. For integration of additional functions (e.g. socket outlet, rotary dimmer), the porcelain frame can be combined with all Serie 1930 centre inserts made of plastic.

More and more people are following the trend of not following a trend. For these people there is Berker Manufacture. This is where we create switches that are a real blend of high-tech and handicraft, and that are utterly unique. We often design items together with architects and planners for a very particular property or for a special project.

Instructions for cleaning and care

Mounting with adapter ring

In the case of heavy dirt we recommend using a diluted household cleaning agent containing soap. Glass and aluminium surfaces can be cleaned using common glass cleaners.

71 138,4 148,9

31 93

76

23 160

Clean by wiping the surfaces with a moist, soft, lint-free cloth.

For heavy dirt on stainless steel surfaces, special cleaners such as "Surface Shield" and "Chromol" are preferable. Please observe the instructions for use of the cleaning material, as it may not be suitable for use with plastics or fine metallic surface finishes.

Abrasives and polishes, acid-based (scale removing) detergents and detergents containing chlorine will generally damage all surfaces. Moreover, painted/lacquered surfaces must not come into contact with detergents that contain alcohol.

Good design is one thing. Outstanding design is something else entirely. When one's design is assessed, judged and, after extensive testing, awarded prizes by several independent expert juries simultaneously, it does make one a little proud - we should know. After all, Berker has won no less than 50 design prizes, both

awards

national and international, over the years. 15 for catalogues, brochures and other communications materials, and 36 for switches and systems. This is a welcome affirmation for us, but also for our customers: it shows them they are not alone in their good taste.
