Math BSISD Workshop Math: Grades 5‐12 May 30, 2017 DATE: May 30, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm PLACE: BSHS, Room 107 GRADE LEVELS: 5‐12 PRESENTER: Mo Seghier, BSHS
DESCRIPTION This is intended to be an enrichment, collaborative‐effort workshop in which the primary goal is to improve our students’ preparation for upper‐level math and physics courses in high school. Studies have shown that grade‐school students are often able to solve problems, sometimes even difficult ones, but with little understanding of the concepts being used, and with nearly no post‐processing skills,
i.e., interpretation of the result(s). Invariably, students try to leap directly from a problem statement to a numerical answer (emphasis on answer). One difficulty is that students are more comfortable with numerals and do not grasp the meaning of mathematical symbols. And one way to address this difficulty is to teach students to represent the same algebra or arithmetic concept in multiple fashions besides the oft‐used numerical representation, viz., analytically, verbally, and graphically. In‐depth understanding is acquired only when students are able to translate their knowledge between the different representations/perspectives of the concept, and in any direction. I truly believe that an expert problem solver is one who is able to move back and forth between representations without conscious effort. But teaching our students this skill is going to require us, the teachers, to make a conscientious, intentional effort.
LEARNING OUTCOMES One or two simple algebra/arithmetic concepts (such as rate) along with real‐world applications will be used to help us to learn how: To illustrate to our students the multiple perspectives (analytical, graphical, numerical, and verbal) that can be brought to bear on the same mathematical concept. To transfer emphasis away (though not completely) from calculational algebra skills and towards more in‐depth reasoning and problem solving skills. To increase emphasis on real‐life applications, and verbal interpretation of analytical and numerical results. And, not least of all, to increase our students’ confidence in their mathematical ability and turn them into thinkers.
NOTE: What this workshop is NOT about is, frightening our kids half to death with arcane concepts. Rather, it is about presenting ideas that can be utterly terrifying in a harmless, user‐friendly manner.

(12 CPE credits) ***Remember it is up to YOU to provide documentation for appropriate professional development between May 30, 2017 and August 7, 2017. Failure to complete this assignment in its entirety (18 hours) may result in the employee being docked up to 3 days of personal leave in November when BSISD is not in session. ***Any PD selected outside of the above options MUST be approved by your principal PRIOR to attending in order to get comp time credit.
***Any PD in which the teacher receives a STIPEND for attending does NOT count for November comp time. Teachers MUST attend 12 hours (in addition to the required 6 hours of training) of UNPAID professional development in order to accrue PAID time off in November.
