Brushes: Papillion by Artist’s Club Liner, size 10/0 #20145; size 2 #20148; size 4 #20149 Angular Shader, size ½” #20111; size 5/8” 20112 Highlighter Set #20173 Old Scruffy Brush (optional)

Preparation: Seal and sand the box. Spray the entire box inside with White Spray Paint (be sure to do this in a well ventilated area). Then basecoat the outer areas with Snow White. You can spray the entire box, and then basecoat the sides and edges with Snow White. If you just leave the box sprayed, and need to make any corrections on the background, you will find a very slight difference between the spray and the brushed on acrylic. Basecoat the front with Lamp Black. 1

Trace the pattern onto tracing paper then onto the painting surface, top and sides. The bubbles on the front and handle are just free handed circles, so that the sizes and placement will vary. I have included a few sizes for your convenience. Be sure to make them big enough to show brightly.

Painting Instructions: Brush Handles Base coat the brush handles with Lamp Black using your size 2 Liner. Dry brush a soft Snow White highlight to the right of center. Apply a thin line of Snow White to the center of the dry brushing. On the group of brushes on the sides of the box, float Snow White to separate them, then line with Snow White. Brush Ferrules Base coat the ferrules with Dove Grey, using your size 2 Liner. Shade with floated Neutral Grey where the bristles attach, and next to the horizontal part. Shade the ends of the horizontal parts, and then line the ferrules with Neutral Grey + a touch Lamp Black. Brush Bristles Base coat the bristles with Marigold using your size 2 Liner. Float shade at the base of the bristles, first with Burnt Sienna, using your size ½” Angular Shader, then with Burnt Umber. Apply thinned Burnt Umber “hair” lines coming from the base of the bristles to the tips, using your size 10/0 Liner. Ribbon Base coat the ribbon with Tomato Red. Float shade the bottoms with Antique Maroon and then highlight on the tops with Tangerine. Both will take more than one layer. Use the appropriate size shader for the area you are floating. Refer to the 2

picture for the shading and highlight of the bow and knot. Paint Spills and color on brush tips Top left -Base coat Lilac, shade bottom with Grape Juice. Highlights on top are soft floats of Snow White. Line the color area with thinned Grape Juice, using your size 10/0 Liner. Top right-Base coat with Sea Breeze, shade with Blue Grass Green. High lights on top are soft floats of Snow White. Line the paint with thinned Blue Grass Green, using your size 10/0 Liner. Bubbles on front and handle Start with one bubble basecoated Sea Breeze. Shade one side with floated Blue Grass Green and highlight the other side with floated Snow White. Add a dot of Snow White to the highlighted side with your stylus. Follow the same procedure using the following basecoat and shading colors: Lilac shaded with Grape Juice, Baby Blue shaded with True Blue, Bubble Gum shaded with Razzle Berry, Melon shaded with Cad. Orange.

Finishing: Add dots of Snow White to the black areas using the handle of your size 2 Liner. You want these big enough to be seen, but be careful of getting too many. Making dots is easy and fun, and we have a tendency to get carried away making them, so it might be helpful to first make little marks of white to place them, then dot with the paint. Dry overnight before proceeding. Add StarLite Varnish where you want it and when dry, varnish with DecoArt DuraClear Satin Varnish. I hope you have enjoyed this project. I sure had fun designing it. Enjoy your painting journey! 3
