INSIDE THIS ISSUE LETTERS TO SANTA: This year our local Ace Hardware is making writing letters to Santa easy. All you have to do is go to the area store located at 6567 US-90, next to Wildcat Drive in Glen St. Mary, and be ready to tell Santa what you want…

Shortly after Michael Rhoden was married in 1998, he discovered he had failing kidneys. He began to feel really bad one day and took it easy for a few more days, only to find that he just wasn’t getting any better. When he did get in to see the doctor, they discovered that he only had 25% kidney function and a kidney transplant was necessary. His oldest brother, Mark, donated a kidney for Michael at that time and he has done well with that transplant for the past 16 years, longer than expected. Now 38, Michael is facing kidney failure again and local efforts are underway to help him get it done. Going through an organ transplant process is not only difficult but also very stressful on a family. Organ donation is when a person allows healthy transplantable organs and tissues to be removed, either after death or while the donor is alive, and transplanted into another person. Common transplantations include: kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas, intestines, lungs, bones, bone marrow, skin and corneas. Some organs and tissues can be donated by living donors, such as a kidney or part of the liver, but most donations occur after the donor has died. Kidney transplantation (or renal transplantation) is the organ transplant of a kidney into a patient with end-stage renal disease. Kidney transplantation is typically classified as deceased-donor (formerly known as cadaveric) or living-donor transplantation depending on the source of the donor organ. Living-donor renal transplants are further characterized as genetically related (living-related) or non-related (living-unrelated) transplants, depending on whether a biological relationship exists between the donor and recipient.

As of August 1, 2016, there are 120,004 people waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in the US. Of these, 96,645 await kidney transplants. While views of organ donation are positive, there is a large gap between the numbers of registered donors compared to those awaiting organ donations on a global level. Michael is a particularly lucky man as he has another brother, Mitchell, who is willing to give him one of his kidneys. Mitchell is currently undergoing the extensive testing it takes to donate a kidney, but so far everything is a match. This month, on November 28th they will move onto the next phase of matching. Michael told us, “I am very thankful to my brothers for what they are willing to do for me. The first 16 years was a lot easier on me than the next part of my journey, but with the support of my family and friends, I am going to make the best of it. I can honestly say, that without

my brothers and the love and care from my wife, I wouldn’t be here today.” You can help out Michael Rhoden and his family with the mounting expenses they face by participating in the local fundraisers for him. On Saturday, December 3rd there will be a booth at the Christmas festivities downtown selling tickets for a gun drawing (a Savage 22 Magnum rifle), a brand new recliner (donated by Gibson McDonald furniture) and an enormous ladies gift basket with numerous donated items (valued at over $300). Make a donation by entering the drawings and you may just be a winner – but you’re always a winner when you help out someone in need. We’re wishing you the best of luck Michael – and praying for Mitchell, and a safe recovery for your both.

LETTERS TO SANTA

HAPPY from our Family to Yourss Our Holiday Hours Are As Follows: Thanksgiving, November 24th – Closed Christmas Eve, December 24th – Closed Monday, December 26th – Closed in Observance of Christmas Saturday, December 31st - Normal Business Hours 9:00AM – 12:30PM Monday, January 2nd – Closed in Observance of New Year’s Day

This year our local Ace Hardware is making writing letters to Santa easy. All you have to do is go to the area store located at 6567 US-90, next to Wildcat Drive in Glen St. Mary, and be ready to tell Santa what you want for Christmas. There is a station set up in the middle of the store complete with a small table and chairs, as well as, paper, pencils, and envelopes for everyone’s convenience. The store’s manager, Leonard Pittman, told us this opportunity was for people 6-600. In other words, it is for everybody. He went on to tell the story of a woman who has recently been widowed and decided to participate to maybe, kick the holiday blues. She returned nearly two years later with her new husband and an absolute new lease on life. She spoke of how that simple childish act and how the response she received helped her more than they would ever know. You see these letters are not just being sent off to a fake address in the sky, but to Santa himself and, as long as they are received by December 3rd, they are guaranteed a response that will come straight out of the North Pole. Those that also submit a picture will be put in a drawing for a grand prize of a huge tub full of Yeti products. To entice everybody to get their letters in on time, Ace is hosting a chance to meet Santa in person on that same day, before he carries away all those letters and creative Christmas pictures. Santa will arrive around 10:30AM and stay until 2:00PM.

FREE VENDOR TRAINING & EDUCATION

There will be no entrance fee, but you must supply your own camera. And to further fill Baker County with Christmas spirit, Ace is also using this season of giving to fund raise for one of their favorite charities… the Children’s Miracle Network! During the Christmas Holidays, from November 25th through December 25th, they will be asking you to “round it up”. By rounding your total up to the next highest dollar you can help the CMN raise awareness and build healthy programs that benefit our Baker County kids through Shands and Wolfson’s Hospitals. Ace clearly understands the “Reason for the Season” and is promoting good cheer from every angle. So don’t forget to stop by December 3rd to get your letters in to Santa and pose for a picture with the jolly ole’ elf himself. And while you’re there, pick up a few gifts and “round it up” for the kids!

Come join us at Ferreira Funeral Services on December 8th at 7:00PM to celebrate your loved ones life.

Please bring an ornament for our tree lighting ceremony.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Baker Prevention Coalition Inc., (BPCI) is presenting their Vendor Training and Education Program, which is designed to support and supplement the corporate training that local stores, restaurants and bars already have in place, and will focus on the moral and legal responsibilities associated with alcohol abuse. This voluntary training eliminates the need for local ordinances to address these issues. The two hour course will provide participants with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to detect underage persons attempting to purchase alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, issues related to serving alcohol to intoxicated persons, and the liability associated with business patrons driving under the influence. The tentative lesson plan includes our underage operative program, the four valid types of identification that are accepted in the United States, detection and recognition of a fake ID, issues related to driving under the influence, and a question/answer session. This no-cost program is offered as a community service and is currently provided on a voluntary basis, and reinforces the goals of reducing the number of alcohol sales to minors and to lessen the likelihood of customers being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The training will be held in the large Conference Room at the Baker County Health Department located

at 480 West Lowder Street on Tuesday, November 29th from 1:00 to 3:00PM. Businesses that sell and serve alcohol and tobacco should consider taking advantage of this local, no-cost training for themselves and their staff. Attendees must contact Jim Freeman or Taryn Rackley of BPCI, at 904-259-3922, or email [email protected] to ensure availability for the scheduled training date.
