Welcome to Brightwood! On behalf of the board of directors, staff and all members, I want to welcome you to the Brightwood Golf & Country Club. Now in its second century of operation and located in the heart of metropolitan Halifax/Dartmouth, I know you will find this to be a great experience. The open, engaging culture of the members and the convenient location will lend itself to a memorable golf and club experience for you. Our Donald Ross & Willie Park Jr. designed course is both challenging and rewarding. With a pace of play that is a little over four hours, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the club facilities while not tying up your entire day getting to and from the club. Whether you are new to golf or a scratch handicap, we can provide fun and competitive on course opportunities for everyone. We also provide a wide variety of club events buoyed by an active social membership. This year we are extremely proud to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our Ladies Division, and honored as well to host the provincial ladies and seniors’ amateur championships. We strongly encourage you to simply jump in and join the membership in the various events held at the Club throughout the year, as Brightwood is known for its hospitality both on the course and in the clubhouse. If you are unsure about specific events or have any questions regarding the club, please feel free to contact our General Manager Jim Ogilvie or any of our staff who would be more than happy to help. I would also be happy to assist in any way I can. I look forward to meeting you as soon as possible and I hope your experience here at Brightwood exceeds your expectations! Yours Truly, Kevin Chapman President

Welcome t In August 1914 Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden hit the first ball, opening the Brightwood Golf & Country Club, a nine-hole course at that time. The course was built on what were then a few farm properties located on Mount Thom overlooking Halifax Harbour, in an area that is now part of central Dartmouth. The original nine-hole course was designed by Willie Park, Jr., a Scotsman and a two-time British Open Champion. In Canada he designed several golf courses including the Royal Montreal Golf Club. In 1921 the legendary Donald Ross, considered one of the best and most influential architects of all-time, had a plan that he presented to the Brightwood Golf & Country Club that included a second nine holes as well as a redesign of the original nine holes. This plan was adopted and completed in the mid 1920’s, and the design changes remain the same today. Today Brightwood is an active year round facility with a membership of over 800 in various categories. Known for its outstanding social atmosphere and great location, it is also renowned for its competitive spirit. Brightwood has produced more provincial champions in all categories than any other Club in the province. The clubhouse is a beautiful facility that is open year round, offering excellent food, service, and a warm welcoming atmosphere.

Some helpful information when playing Brightwood Brightwood has a few blind areas on the golf course; so we have light switches to indicate when it is safe to hit on holes # 1 and # 5. This is done not only for safety purposes but also to maintain tee time intervals. From the tee you will see the light flashing in the tree to the right center of the fairway; this signifies that it is safe to hit. The light switch on # 1 should be turned on when all player’s balls in your group are on the green. The light switch on # 1 is on the post to the right of the green. The light switch on # 5 is located on a post on the right side of the hole approximately 200 yards from the green. The light is located in a tree on the right side of the hole. When you see the light flashing, it is safe to hit. When playing # 2, if you are on the putting green and the group behind you is waiting on the tee, wave the group behind you to hit up to the green. Once the group behind you has hit putt out and proceed to your next hole. (This is the only Par 3 on the course that this is done) We feature a canteen at our # 9 tee. We ask that when playing your round, if it is clear to hit from the teeing ground on # 9, please do so immediately and proceed with play of the hole. The reason for this is that we want to avoid a backup at our canteen area, which can result in an extended round for all playing behind you. Please give your maintenance crew the right-of-way when they are performing their work. We have experienced and knowledgeable staff who work hard to make your course better. We ask that you and your guests adhere to our white control lines painted around the greens. They are put in place to control and reduce wear patterns from gas cars and pull carts. This will improve turf quality surrounding the greens, leading to better chipping and pitching areas.

Some Golf Course Etiquette and Pace of Play Tips Members should always repair their ball marks and replace all divots. When raking bunkers, pick up your rake before you play your bunker shot. After playing your shot, you already have the rake with you which will speed up play. Please do not take divots on the tee boxes when taking practice swings.

17 After sinking your putt, reach down and take the ball out of the cup. Please do not use the head of the putter. Doing this causes the cup to rise and raises the edge of the hole, damaging the hole for the players behind you. Make sure your group is keeping pace with the group in front of you. Follow your Player Assistant’s instructions and obey all signs on the golf course. Play ready golf. If you are ready to play and you’re playing partners are not, go ahead and play your shot. Do not use cell phones on the golf course; have consideration for other players. Do not mark your score on the putting green. Please do it on the next teeing ground. VERY IMPORTANT – any time you think your ball may be lost or out of bounds, play a provisional ball. This will help improve our pace of play. Please do not search for your ball forever: 5 minutes is legal, 4 minutes is considerate, and 3 minutes is perfect. A good rule of thumb if you are looking for a ball and the group in front of you has moved on and the group behind you are waiting to hit, abandon your search and play another ball.

Rules to Remember Brightwood offers some unique situations that you may not see at other golf courses. i.e. Boundary fences, relief from exposed rocks in the fairway, etc. Please see our professional staff. They can brief you on our local rules and provide you with a copy to read at your leisure. In 2012 there were some revisions and changes to the Rules of Golf. You may contact our personnel to inquire about the changes or you can also check them out on the Golf Canada or USGA website. A rule to remember: When taking relief from an obstruction, ground under repair, etc., and no penalty is involved, you are entitled to establish your nearest point of relief clear of the obstruction. You are then entitled to one club length relief, no closer to the hole. If a penalty is involved, i.e., ball unplayable, water hazard, you are entitled to two club lengths relief. Remember – No penalty involved – one club length relief Penalty involved – two club lengths relief

The Objective of the Ladies’ Division is to promote and to preserve the best interests of golf for ladies at Brightwood. The members of the Ladies’ Executive are elected to their respective positions at the Annual Meeting in October, with most positions running for a two-year renewable term. The Executive conducts its business at regular meetings, which are called by the Lady President. Each Executive position has a clearly defined role with respect to organizing and overseeing the Ladies golfing activities. A copy of the master plan is available in the Ladies Locker Room When planning for, and managing the Ladies golf season activities, the Executive takes into consideration the following: • • • •

Communication strategies to keep women informed; The wide range of playing ability amongst the women members; The social aspects of the game; The rules of golf as set down by the Nova Scotia Golf Association (NSGA)
