Twofold Role of Standardization DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V.
Traditional Role of Standards • Source of technical know-how • Trade facilitation and opening of markets • Providing a scientific basis for legislation in the health, safety and environment sectors
► New ideas, technologies and products need standardization to get into the marketplace and to be successful

Research & Innovation and Standardization DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V.
• EU and European Standards Organizations are strengthening the links between research/innovation and standardization o For example, the European Commission states in regard to the EU 2020 Strategy1 that “Standards play an important role for innovation” • Standardization strategy should be defined already at the beginning of the research and innovation process o and not in the end!
► Development of new tools and methodologies to support the Horizon 2020 community in standardization 1Europe

BRIDGIT - Bridging the Gap between Research and Standardization DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V.
Promotion of standardization to researchers • Collection of Best Practices from European National Standards Bodies (NSB), and including best strategies in a Toolkit, targeting NSBs and research communities • Regional events to transfer knowledge and to support interaction with standardization • Final European Conference to disseminate the project results
© 2013 DIN e. V.
• Helping researchers to properly include standardization in research projects of Horizon 2020 and providing network possibilities between researchers and NSBs

• To bring NSBs and the research & innovation community together, and to foster the collaboration between NSBs
7
BRIDGIT - Bridging the Gap between Research and Standardization DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V.
BRIDGIT aims at:
• Disseminating the evidence of the correlation between standardization and innovation, • Demonstrating the best practices in Europe, and • Transferring the idea of the Integrated Approach to the research actors in Europe as strategic approach for innovation.

Linking Standardization and R&D&I DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V.
TNS - Transfer of R&D Results through Standardization • Supports research institutes in exploiting standardization as an instrument for transfer and dissemination • Link between research and standardization
© 2013 DIN e. V.
INS - Innovation with Norms and Standards • Supports standard committees in identifying and starting innovative projects
12
DIN Award "Innovation" DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V.
Purpose • DIN established an award for promoting new standards and specification projects in innovative fields DIN awards… • Standard proposals that open up new fields for DIN or give new impulses to existing ones • Standard projects that were initiated by R&D projects
© 2013 DIN e. V.
• Specification projects that promote further (international) standardization activities
13
Conclusions DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V.
