WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?

“The Cougars should have been ranked this preseason. They certainly should have entered the polls after their opening-night clinic against Washington State. But they’ll move up soon enough if they beat Utah and Boise State the next two weeks.” -SI.com’s Stewart Mandel on BYU as “underrated” in his Poll Watch section in his latest column “W/ all the excitement last pm about Leach back in cfb many folks forgot how consistent BYU and Bronco seem to be every yr! Very impressive!!” -ESPN College Football Analyst Kirk Herbstreit via Twitter following BYU’s win over Washington State

2012 BYU Football

independence: year two

2011 was the Cougars inaugural year as an independent. BYU went 10-3 and won its fifth bowl game in six years. The team played teams from the SEC, Pac-12, Big 12, Conference USA, Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West. The Cougars had all 13 games televised, including 12 to a national audience, 11 of which were featured on the ESPN family of networks. BYU had five on ESPN, four on ESPN2 and two on ESPNU. In 2012, BYU ups the ante with a more difficult schedule, featuring a road game at fellow independent Notre Dame along with three teams from the Pac-12 and matchups against the ACC, WAC and MW. To date BYU has five games scheduled to air on the ESPN family of networks along with one on NBC and another on BYUtv, all nationally televised games. The Cougars have future games scheduled with Wisconsin, West Virginia, Nebraska, Notre Dame, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Texas, UCF, Houston, Washington State, Boise State, Utah and Hawai’i.

FLAG BEARERS

BYU has a tradition of selecting a player before each game to run the team flag onto the field. In 2008, the team implemented a new tradition - the alumni flag. The team selects a former Cougar to carry out the alumni flag, along with the chosen current player who runs out with the current team flag. Both flags are white with a blue “Y” logo. The team flag has been signed by each member of the team, while the alumni flag has been signed by former BYU payers. In 2011, the team added a special teams flag, donned by a vintage BYU logo adopted by the special teams, following the same protocol as the team flag with an exemplary special teams player being chosen to carry it each week. Game Team Flag Special Teams Flag Alumni Flag WSU Walter Kahaiali’i (OL) Spencer Hadley (LB) Itula Mili (TE, 1991, 94-96) Weber State Daniel Sorensen (DB) Ezekiel Ansah (LB/DL) Brian McDonald (RB, 2000-01)

TEAM CAPTAINS

Selected by their peers, quarterback Riley Nelson, linebacker Brandon Ogletree and running back David Foote have been named as team captains for the 2012 season. The three seniors are all new captains for the 2012 season. The threecaptains also represent the offense, the defense and special teams. Nelson will serve as the offense’s captain, Ogletree for the defense and Foote for special teams. Nelson has completed 43 of 65 passes for 529 yards and 3 touchdowns this year. Ogletree has 15 total tackles to lead the team. Foote has 9 rushes for 42 yards and also has 3 tackles on special teams.

LAVELL EDWARDS STADIUM

LaVell Edwards Stadium with its 63,470-seat capacity is home to BYU football. Originally Cougar Stadium, it was built in 1964 and seated 45,000. It was expanded in 1982 to seat 65,000 permanent seats before official capacity became 64,045 after refurbishing the middle of the east section. The capacity now sits at 63,470 due to accomidations for wheelchair access. For the 2012 season the stadium will feature new video walls and LED ribbons on the north and south end zone stands. Stadium record: 213-65 (.766) 2012 stadium record: 2-0 (1.000) Under Mendenhall: 38-7 (.844)

MISSIONS

Brigham Young University is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The missionary emphasis of the Church is perhaps one of its most recognized characteristics. Since the organization of the Church in 1830, over one million missionaries have served. The Church operates 347 missions around the world in 145 nations speaking 164 languages. More than 53,000 missionaries representing the Church are serving proselytizing missions in 330 missions around the world. Seventy-five percent of the Church’s proselytizing missionaries are young men between the ages of 19 and 26. A substantial number of young women and older couples also serve proselytizing missions. Missionaries work long hours—seven days a week for two years or 18 months for women and couples— teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and participating in community service. There are currently 38 missionaries from the football team serving in 17 different countries. Members of the current team cover six of the seven continents around the globe and speak six different languages.

firesides

The BYU football team participates in hour-long devotionals prior to eight games this season. These devotionals are referred to as “firesides” and are intended to help players, coaches and those who attend strengthen or gain a knowledge of our purpose here on earth. Firesides typically include a musical number from members of the team and talks from selected players, along with Holly and Bronco Mendenhall. • BYU’s

offense stated the goal it would like a balance of 300 yards passing and 150 yards rushing in every game this season. Through two games BYU has averaged 305.0 yards passing and 184 yards rushing to meet its goal in the young season. • BYU is starting a senior quarterback in Riley Nelson, and has another senior in the wings if neccessary with James Lark. The last 11 senior starting signal callers have put together a 119-23-2 record since 1977, a winning percentage of .833. That’s an average of almost 11 wins per season. Steve Sarkisian led BYU to an NCAA record 14 victories in 1996. Ty Detmer and Kevin Feterik tied for the lowest win total in a senior season, still nabbing eight victories apiece. Should Lark step in, the product of St. George is expected to continue the senior tradition. • Look for BYU’s bigtime wide receivers . . . because they are big. The wide receiver tandem of Cody Hoffman, 6-foot-4, 215 pounds and Ross Apo, 6-foot-3, 207 pounds, accounted for 95 receptions, 1,396 yards and 19 total touchdowns last year. Against Weber State, Hoffman totaled seven receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown. Apo had for receptions for 31 yards vs. Washington State. • A renewed emphasis on nutrition has helped the offensive line transform from last year to 2012. BYU’s big men checked in at an average of over 315 pounds in 2011. Through a dedicated conditioning and nutrition program started in the spring, the line in 2012 tips the scale at about 292 pounds. The Cougars hope the more athletic line will provide a bigger punch in the run game and give better protection. Through two games BYU has averaged 479.0 yards per game, including 305.0 in the passing game and 184.0 in the run game. • Another left handed dual-threat quarterback takes the field in 2012 with Nelson. The southpaw will look to live up to BYU’s most famous lefty quarterback Steve Young. Young started the ‘82 and ‘83 seasons for the Cougars, putting together a 1983 senior season with 3,902 yards passing and 444 yards rushing. That season he threw for 33 touchdowns and rushed for another eight. He is second in quarterback rushing yards at BYU with 1,084. Nelson is third with 699. • The tight end position has made a strong comeback with Kaneakua Friel. Friel leads the tight ends with 10 receptions for 131 yards and a team-leading three touchdowns. He is second on the team in receiving yards and tied for first in total receptions. BYU’s other tight ends have five catches for 78 yards. OFFENSIVE PLAYERS SEASON (2012)/CAREER HIGHS IN A GAME

BYU DEFENSE IN THE NCAA (as of 9/10)

Daniel Sorensen, Eathyn Manumaleuna and Kyle Van Noy each forced a fumble against Weber State in BYU’s 45-13 win. Uona Kaveinga returned one fumble for 23 yards. The Cougars finished 2011 with a total of 14 forced fumbles. The number of sacks the BYU defense inflicted on Weber State, for a total loss of 40 yards. After finishing 2011 with 23 sacks, the Cougars are off to a good start this season with nine after just two games, good for a No. 2 nationally. The Cougar defense ranks No. 10 in total defense after week two. After holding its opening Pac-12 opponent to -5 rushing yards, BYU continued to prove its ability to stop the run, allowing Weber State 115 yards on the ground. Since Bronco Mendenhall has taken over the defensive coordinating duties again (22 games dating back to 2010), BYU has allowed an average of 93.5 rushing yards per game. That mark is bested by only one other team, Alabama. BYU allowed just 254 total yards against Weber State. It was the eighth game in a row the defense has held a team under 300 total yards. The Cougars gave up 115 yards on the ground and 139 yards through the air.

#98, Romney Fuga, DL As a senior leader, much of the defense starts with nose tackle Fuga. A 300-pounder, Fuga helps stuff the run for the defense which so far has allowed just 55.0 yards per game, including a minus-5 yard effort against Washington State. #6 Jordan Johnson, DB Johnson made waves in his starting game at field corner vs. WSU. Johnson picked off a pass and returned it for 64 yards. In his second game, he rallied for three tackles and a pass breakup. #1 Joe Sampson, DB Sampson, a 5-foot-10, 203 pounder, had a career night against Weber St. Sampson finished the game with career highs in total tackles (6), solo tackles (4) and assisted tackles (2). #2 Spencer Hadley, LB Hadley moved from inside linebacker where he played in all 13 games of 2011, including one start, to outside for the 2012 season. Hadley finished the game against Weber St. with a careerhigh two sacks and four tackles, continuing to prove he adds even more athleticism to one of BYU’s strongest position groups. #55 Eathyn Manumaleuna, DL A four-year starter, Manumaleuna is another anchor for a stout defensive line. The 6-foot-2, 288 pounder racked four tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and tied a career high 1.5 sacks in his second game as a senior. #47 Ezekiel Ansah, LB/DL One of the most amazing athletes to come through the program, Ansah proved to be a serious threat as a pass rusher in BYU’s opening win against WSU with a career-high two tackles for loss. The former 200-meter track athlete, with his 6-foot-6, 270-pound frame, recorded two tackles against Weber State. #52 Russell Tialavea, DL The 6-foot-3, 265 pounder returns to the Cougar squad after a mission for his senior season. Against Weber State, Tialavea blocked a PAT and conributed three tackles and one pass breakup. #20 Craig Bills, DB Bills earned letterman honors as a true freshman and saw action in all 13 games. After returning from a mission, Bills contributed five tackles against Weber State.

2012 BYU FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE NOTES

THE BYU DEFENSE • BYU

is No. 10 nationally in total defense to start 2012. BYU allowed 312.9 total yards per game and held eight different teams to less than 300 total yards for the 2011 season. With seven returning starters on the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars continue to improve upon that number in 2012 as they’ve showed in their first two games. The Cougars have gotten off to a good start in 2012, holding opponents to an average of 239 yards. • For BYU, a low jersey number on defense means business. The numbers 1-9 on defense are all significant contributors. No. 1 Joe Sampson may start at free safety or as the fifth defensive back in the nickel formation. No.’s 2, 3, 4 are three of the four possible starters at linebacker with No. 2 Spencer Hadley and No. 3 Kyle Van Noy on the outside and No. 4 Uona Kaveinga on the inside. No. 5, Alani Fua brings more athleticism to the outside backer position and No. 6 and No. 7, Jordan Johnson and Preston Hadley, respectively, will lock down the corner positions with No. 9 Daniel Sorensen will man the KAT safety position. The group combined for 33 tackles, three and a half sacks, two forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries in BYU’s win over Weber State. • The Cougars’ sack attack against Weber State tacked on another six sacks to their season total, good for a second-place tie in the nation with nine. The six sacks against Weber State marked the first time BYU recorded at least five sacks in a game sine its last FCS opponent, Idaho State, in 2011, when the defense totaled six against the Bengals. Six different players have sacks so far in 2012, with Kyle Van Noy leading the way with three at the fourth-best national mark. With nine sacks already, BYU is off to a strong start in 2012 after totaling 23 in 2011. The Cougars’ nine sacks on the season have pushed opposing offenses back 62 yards. • The Kyle Van Noy Show is back. After being the only Division I player to record a statistic in each of the major defensive categories in 2011, the 6-foot-3, 235 pounder is back at it again in 2012. The Nagurski Trophy and Lombardi Award watchlist candidate has top defensive marks for the Cougars in five categories, including tackles for loss (3), sacks (3), pass breakups (2), quarterback hurries (4) and forced fumbles (1). The proven defensive threat had a career-high two sacks in BYU’s season opener against Washington State, before adding another against Weber State, to boost his national ranking to a fourth-place tie. The junior from Reno, Nev. is also tied for 39th in tackles for loss. Van Noy’s defensive presence helped the Cougar defense secure the No. 10 spot in total defense after week two. • Stopping the run is often a theme and BYU is pretty good at it. The Cougars finished the 2011 season ranked No. 19 in rushing defense, allowing just over 112 rushing yards per game. BYU’s run-stopping effort held opponents under 100 total yards rushing eight times on the season and allowed less than 40 yards three times. The Cougars continue the trend at the start of the 2012 season, holding WSU’s offense to -5 total yards rushing, the second time in three years allowing a team to negative rushing yards. After allowing 115 yards against Weber State, BYU has the 12th-best mark nationally in rushing defense, averaging 55 yards per game. • The Cougars are spreading the wealth. Team defense has contributed to BYU’s success as only three players have recorded double digits in tackles after two games while twenty-one players have more than one tackle. Brandon Ogletree has a team-high 15 tackles with Preston Hadley in second with 13 and Joe Sampson sitting in the third spot with 10. Six players have already tallied sacks. BYU’s quarterback hurries and tackles for loss have come from 13 different players. DEFENSIVE PLAYERS SEASON (2012)/CAREER HIGHS IN A GAME

BYU had the third-best mark nationally with an average of 39 yards per kick return, though they have only had two kick returns through two games.

Junior dual-threat Cody Hoffman recorded 34 kickoff return yards against Weber State. The yards pushed Hoffman past Austin Collie for BYU’s No. 4 spot all-time with 1,293 career kickoff return yards. After averaging 53.2 yards on five punts against Weber State, Riley Stephenson has a 52.0 punting average on the season so far. Stephenson is one punt shy of the national leaderboard, where his 52.0 average would be good for No. 2. BYU has made 100 percent of its PATs after two games. Stephenson is a perfect 9 for 9, following the mold of 2011 when Justin Sorensen went 48 of 48.

Justin Sorensen’s 280 kickoff yards against Weber State moved the junior kicker past 10,000 career kickoff yards.

#96 Reed Hornung, DS A distant relative of legendary utility player, Paul Hornung, Reed has been BYU’s deep snapper for the past two seasons and looks to cap off his senior year with another consistent effort in 2012. Originally from Minnesota, Hornung came from Snow College and has handled all the snapping duties since his sophomore season. Along with snapping, Hornung made a big play in the 2011 Armed Forces Bowl on punt coverage, distrupting Tulsa’s punt returner just enough to cause a fumble. On the ensuing play the Cougar offense scored a touchdown with just seconds remaining before the half. BYU would go on to win on another last second touchdown. A former walk-on player, Hornung has one tackle on special teams this year.

2012 BYU Football COACH MENDENHALL/COACHES NOTES

BYU OFFENSIVE STAFF

HEAD COACH/DEF. COORDINATOR BRONCO MENDENHALL

Off. coord./QBs

Years at BYU Entering 8th year as head coach, 10th at BYU Years Overall Entering 24th year

Asst. Head Coach/TE Lance Reynolds (Field) 2011-present BYU assistant head coach and tight ends coach; 2004-10 BYU assistant head coach and running backs coach; 2001-03 BYU assistant head coach and offensive line; 2000 BYU assistant head coach, offensive coordinator; and running backs coach; 1985-99 BYU running backs coach; 1983-84 BYU junior varsity coordinator; 1982 Ricks College assistant head coach and offensive coordinator; 1981 Snow College assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and running backs; 1979-80 BYU graduate assistant.

During his seven seasons as the head coach at Brigham Young University, Bronco Mendenhall has returned the Cougars to the ranks of the nation’s top teams. Taking over a BYU program in 2005 that was coming off three losing seasons, Mendenhall has guided his teams to seven straight bowl invitations, two outright conference championships and regular national top-25 rankings. The Cougars finished their first season as a football independent in 2011 with a 10-3 record and No. 25 final ranking to finish nationally ranked for the fifth time in the last six seasons. Under his leadership, BYU has earned a 68-24 (.739) record to date to rank No. 15 in total wins among all teams in the nation during that span. The Cougars have received seven straight bowl invitations for the first time since a string of 17 consecutive bowls invitations from 1978 through 1994. Mendenhall is the only coach in BYU football history to take his first seven teams to a bowl game. Mendenhall has led BYU to bowl wins in five of the last six seasons to become the first Cougar teams to ever win five bowls in a six-year span. Nationally, BYU is one of only seven programs to win five bowl games in the last six seasons. The Cougars have also won 10 or more games in five of the past six seasons and five of Mendenhall’s seven seasons overall. In fact, only four programs have had more 10-win seasons over the past seven years.

Another hallmark of Mendenhall’s program has been the emphasis on balance and priorities in the many other facets of life outside of football. Reflecting that emphasis, BYU consistently received the most academic allconference honorees each season as a conference member is tied for third nationally for Academic All-America recipients over Mendenhall’s seven seasons at the helm. Seven Cougar student-athletes have been named ESPN Academic All-Americans in that span. Among all FBS schools only Penn State and Nebraska have had more during that period. Mendenhall also serves as the team’s defensive coordinator. The Cougars had the nation’s No. 13 defense in 2011 to help BYU become one of only 11 programs to receive a final Top 25 overall team ranking in at least one of the two major polls during five of the past six seasons. BYU is one of only nine teams to do so in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

YEAR

BYU’s success under Mendenhall is also evident in the national rankings and NCAA statistics. BYU has finished ranked in the top 25 in the various national statistical categories 88 times in the past seven seasons (46 offense, 32 defense, 9 special teams, 1 misc.). The Cougars have achieved 55 top-15 statistical rankings, 37 top-10 rankings and 19 top-5 rankings in that span. The Cougars have also been ranked in the top-25 polls during each of the past six seasons and finished ranked No. 12 following the 2009 season -- the program’s highest final ranking since finishing No. 5 in 1996.
