Brentwood Elementary School Newsletter June 15, 2016 Brentwood’s WEBSITE www.brentwood-school.com

Dear Parents, Well, this it- my last newsletter. My years here at Brentwood have flown by because as they say, time flies when you are having fun. And it has been fun- and challenging, and fulfilling, and a time to look back on with great memories. I have had the opportunity to work with many talented and dedicated teachers and support staff, who each day, strive to make a difference in the lives of our students. I have enjoyed the support of involved parents (more than one generation) whose contributions to Brentwood help make it the great school that it is. But most of all I have had the privilege to be part of the lives of thousands of amazing young children. They’ve made me laugh and cry. They have frustrated me and made me proud. They have surprised meperhaps even shocked me at times. They have amazed me with their resilience and ability to overcome events that would bring an adult to their knees. They have made each day of my career something to look forward to. To say I will miss all of this is probably an understatement, but at the same time, I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life that I am sure I will love just as much as I have my career in education. So as we enter the homestretch I would like to sincerely thank all of the parents and volunteers that have helped us this year. Without you, we could not do many of the activities that make Brentwood School such a great place to learn and grow. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of our students and our staff. We have worked with a great group of kids this year. They may tire us out some days but they also keep us going. Their enthusiasm and energy keeps us all on our toes. We are sorry to see our grade sixes leave but we wish them all the best as they too start a new chapter in their lives. The Brentwood School staff- our custodians, support staff, and teachers - are simply the best. They provide strong academic programming and fun extra-curricular activities for all of our students in a safe and caring learning environment. No one works harder for your children than they do. I will be leaving the school in great shape and in great hands! Good luck to everyone! On behalf of our staff I would like to wish everyone a safe and fun summer holiday. Remember…the best is yet to come! Sincerely, Laurie Huntley- Principal ARE YOU MOVING??

Auction Items Needed Mrs. Fule’s 5A class has been participating in a money management program throughout the year where students have been receiving pretend cash as an incentive. An auction has been scheduled to allow students the opportunity to spend the money they have earned. Grade 4-6 Drama Club WOW! Congratulations to the cast of Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS!! The two performances on Wednesday May 18th were outstanding!! Everyone was so very proud of the cast of 91 students! All the hard work and growth from the auditions in early February to production, three months in all, was so fun to watch. The incredible commitment to the musical especially during the weekend workshop was remarkable. A very special thank you to all the Brentwood School staff members and their children who helped us out in so many ways! We simply could not have done this without your support!!

Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS Cast Party The Brentwood School Grade 4-6 Drama Club will celebrate their production of Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS at a CAST PARTY on Wednesday, June 22nd from 12:15 to 3:00 pm. We will be walking to the Water Park for an afternoon of fun. Lunch will be provided.

Brentwood Has Talent Showcase Approximately 60 Grade 4, 5 and 6 students are auditioning for the opportunity to perform in this year’s Brentwood Has Talent Showcase. Auditions are being held the week of June 13th and the Showcase will be held Tuesday, June 28th at 1:30 pm in the school gym. Please come out and cheer on the many very talented students of Brentwood School! Everyone welcome. Bring your camera!!

Bike Safety Have you ever driven around town and been worried about hitting a child on their bicycle because you have no idea when they are going to jut out in front of your vehicle, or cruise by on the sidewalk as you are pulling out of your garage? Do you ever worry about the safety of your child/children when you send them off for a bike ride? On Wednesday, June 22 Constable Andrea Dyke form the RCMP detachment will be coming to Brentwood to speak to each grade about bike and street safety. Constable Dyke has included Bike Safety parent information sheets (on the Community page). Please spend some time refreshing yourselves with bike safety rules and how they pertain to the safety of your child. It is helpful if you know what your child will be taught in school so you can continue to reinforce these rules with them over the summer holidays.

Farm Safety On June 23 our Grade 4, 5, 6 students will be participating in an all-day Progressive Ag safety day with sessions on small machinery, sun, hearing, weather, chemical, animal, water, internet safety and First Aid to name a few. Students will be put into small cross-graded groups and rotated though a variety of presenters throughout the day. Students should dress for the weather as some stations are outside. Pizza lunch and snacks will be supplied by the organization. Ensure they have a water bottle and a hat if it is hot and appropriate warmer clothing if the day is cool. We will also be looking for one to two volunteers per class to supervise a group of students and assist with lunch distribution on June 23. If you are available and willing to volunteer, please indicate this to your child’s teacher by Wednesday, June 15.

LOST AND FOUND Our Lost and Found cupboard is overflowing with all sorts of clothing and if your child is missing items from his/her closet you should pop in and check out the cupboard. We will be donating ALL of the clothing to the Diabetes Association at the end of June.
