T

he Port of New Orleans

is a deep-draft multipurpose port at the center of the world’s busiest port system — Louisiana’s Lower Mississippi River. Connected to major inland markets and Canada via 14,500 miles of waterways, six class I railroads and the interstate highway system, the Port is the ideal gateway for steel, project cargo, containers, coffee, natural rubber, chemicals, agricultural products, manufactured goods and more. An extensive network of ocean carrier services as well as added-value services such as transloading of bulk into containers make the Port of New Orleans the superior logistics solution for many types of cargo.

Governance

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans governs the Port, sets policies and regulates traffic and commerce. The Board is made up of seven commissioners who are unsalaried and serve five-year staggered terms. The Governor of Louisiana appoints board members from a list of three nominees submitted by 19 local business, civic, labor, education and maritime groups.

Facilities

The Port’s facilities include 20 million square feet of cargo handling area and more than 3.1 million square feet of covered storage area. The Port’s facilities accommodate an average of 1,800 vessel calls each year. Overall, the Port’s 2.01 mile long quay between Henry Clay Avenue and Milan Street terminals is the world’s longest wharf and can accommodate as many as 15 vessels simultaneously. One of the Port’s unique competitive advantages is that its breakbulk terminals have the capability to discharge cargo directly to barge. The 61-acre Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal operates with six gantry cranes and a recent marshalling yard expansion that brings the terminal’s capacity to 640,000 TEUs. The Port has an additional expansion footprint at Napoleon Avenue that will support more than 1.2 million TEUs per year with continued investment. A state-of-the-art dockside cold storage facility, the Henry Clay Avenue Refrigerated Terminal, was recently completed and solidifies New Orleans as a leading exporter of poultry.

Intermodal Access

The Port of New Orleans is America’s most intermodal port. It is connected to major markets across the continent by the interstate highway system and is the only seaport in the U.S. served by all six class I rail lines, 50 ocean carriers, 16 barge lines and 75 truck lines. The Clarence Henry Truckway, a two-lane roadway on Port property, makes fast transit times even faster. The Port also offers near-dock rail and ship-to-barge services. The Port is currently investing $23.5 to develop a new intermodal railyard to increase capacity and efficiency.
