Brazil Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro ‘A Cidade Maravilhosa’ - the marvellous city. This is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Even its own vastness is dwarfed by the dramatic landscape in which it is set. Built on a 60 km beach front, Rio has a population of 12 million, and is split into 156 districts. This city has everything: vibrant music, excellent restaurants, beautiful people, 12 football teams, night clubs, cheap shopping and white sandy beaches. The city is best appreciated from one of the two best viewpoints and landmarks of Rio - the 30m high statue of Christ The Redeemer, atop the 710 m high Corcovado Mountain and the 396 m high granite cone of Sugar Loaf Mountain. In Rio today, wealthy neighbourhoods like Ipanema and LeBlon stand side by side with the legendary favelas (shanty towns), built on steep hillsides, in which 20% of Cariocas (Rio’s inhabitants) live. Rocinha, the largest favela in South America, houses 80,000 people. However, full employment has meant that modern-day favelas generally

have electricity, and brick is rapidly replacing wood and corrugated iron as a building material. Beach culture dominates the city. Copacabana beach is at the centre of this and locals make full use of its riches. The beach is a place to relax, the place to play football or beach volleyball, to walk, to sunbathe, to see and to be seen - it is the beating heart of Rio. During summer, (December to March) temperatures range from 32°C to 42°C with high humidity. In winter the temperature drops to a comfortable 22°C to 32°C. The sea is always warm. The Statue of Christ the Redeemer is one of the seven new wonders of the world.

Beaches near Rio

When people think of Brazil, the Rio carnival is often one of the first things that springs to mind.

Within approximately 3 – 4 hours of the city of Rio de Janeiro, there are many beautiful beaches and coastal areas which make for a perfect combination with Rio or an ideal relaxing stay after travelling around Brazil.

It is 4 days of dazzling costumes, Samba (the famous Brazilian dance) and parties before Lent begins. Carnival dates are 5th – 8th March 2011. The heart of the party is the Sambadrome stadium where the fantastic parades take place. However, during the day the party spills out to the local neighbourhoods as smaller parades (known as blocos) take place. The whole city comes to life during this time of year and is a great time to visit. Please note that the hotels often have a 4 or 5 night mandatory stay during Carnival week. Hotels and flights need to be booked well in advance to avoid availability problems.

Sagu Mini Resort (pousada) The Sambadrome The Sambadrome is the best place to watch the parades. It is 700 m of paved street especially built for the carnival parades. It has a 65,000 capacity. Each samba school has 80 minutes on the parade ground during this time the thousands of dancers, percussion section and floats will delight the audience with their creativity and dancing skills. The parade is taken very seriously by the samba schools who spend the year leading up to the event choosing their theme and creating their floats. The samba schools are ranked in leagues much like football, with the ‘Premier League’ schools performing on the Sunday and Monday evening during carnival. Tickets can be pre-booked for the Sambadrome and is highly recommended. There is a special section in the stadium for tourists (Sector 9). Local vendors sell small cushions as the seats are concrete and the parade can go on from 8pm until the early morning! The Sambadrome is very well organized and safe. There are fast food stands and information points. 202 Sunvil Traveller

Parati

Iguaçu Falls

Parati is located halfway between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The journey time by road (from both cities) is approximately 4 hours to reach this beautiful colonial town.

Already covered in our Argentina pages, the ‘Cataratas do Iguaçu’ in Portuguese, bordering the southern state of Parana, Argentina and Paraguay are probably the most impressive sight in Brazil if not in the whole of South America and are considered to be one of the natural wonders of the world.

Untouched by the passing of time, it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for representing some of the World’s most important examples of Portugese colonial architecture. There are wonderful churches to visit, art galleries, antique shops, cafes, restaurants and brightly coloured houses with hidden courtyards, resplendent with exotic plants.

Around 275 individual waterfalls combine to form this spectacular sight; a waterfall nearly 3 km in length with a deafening sound that can be heard from miles away. As well as the falls themselves, the national park has a lot to offer. The vegetation in the surrounding area is incredibly lush and the sub-tropical climate makes it a superb location for bird watching as well as being a ‘hotspot’ for huge numbers of butterflies and orchids.

Brazil The Pantanal

The Pantanal Aptly named the world’s last great wilderness, the Pantanal - 230,000 sq. km of seasonally flooded, veldt-like swampland - is a hugely diverse habitat. From October to April, rainfall in the hilly areas, especially in the Chapada dos Guimarães, causes streams and rivers to flood the northern Pantanal. The rivers break their banks and the waters augment the swamp lakes where fish have been breeding. The flora blooms and the trees produce fruit on which the breeding fish feed. At this time of the year, the Pantanal has low water and most wading birds are to be found there. From April onwards, however, the waters drain towards the south and the birds migrate to the north to breed, feeding

on the enormous stocks of fish which, now that the waters have receded, are trapped in the swamp lakes. The Pantanal has larger stretches of open water and, in the months from April to October, the animals tend to leave the area. The best time to view birds and reptiles is from March to October, especially during the nesting season (July to October).

Mammals are more easily spotted during the dry season months of January to June, when there are fewer people, and January to April is when the forest is in bloom. Butterflies are at their most plentiful in April and November.

South of Cuiaba, about 3 hours along the Transpantaneria Park Road and through some very typical swamplands, the woodbuilt, simple lodge has 15 twin rooms, some with double bed. The accommodation is basic but the rooms have ceiling fans, air-conditioning, screened windows and bathrooms with shower. This is a very homely and friendly place. The regional food is excellent (the lodge produces its own vegetables, makes its own cheese and rears its own cattle). The lodge also has a swimming pool, covered deck and large verandas strung with hammocks. There are two excellent, raised board walks through marshland and two high, treetop observation towers from which to view the surrounding landscape, especially at dawn and dusk. Andre Thuronyi, the owner of Araras, has been a leader in the fight to maintain the environmental quality of the Pantanal for the last 23 years. A consultant to the state government, he is involved in most regional environmental initiatives and in the fight to prevent any large hotel projects in the area. He fought hard - and succeeded - to prevent the asphalting of the Transpantaneira 206 Sunvil Traveller

Park Road so as to halt any exploitation of the area. At Araras they have succeeded in maintaining two groups of the endangered giant river otter, both of which are now actively breeding. Local numbers of the rare and spectacular hyacinth macaw have risen from 27 to 42 in the last six years through the protection of their natural breeding habitat within a protected area on the estate. We recommend a three or four night stay at one of the lodges including a full programme of guided activities. Sunvil also offer various longer and more involved itineraries for visitors with more time to spend in the area. Please ask us for details on extensions to more remote areas and packages combining the lowlands of the Pantanal with the rainforest and the highlands of the nearby Chapada dos Guimarães. In this part of Brazil, conserving the environment both through protecting the natural habitat and supporting the indigenous population (human and animal) is paramount. This lodge is located, as the name would suggest, on the banks of the Mutum river between two lakes in one of the most beautiful parts of Mato Grosso. This is a good base from which to explore the Pantanal. Excursions are carried out largely by boat during the flooded season (November – April) and at this time of year the unusual landscape forms small ‘islands’ which are home to isolated farms and pousadas as well as huge amounts of wildlife. Guided activities such as horse riding, walking and boat trips are all included with bilingual, naturalist guides. The Lodge has 16 air-conditioned units (split into 2 double rooms per unit) with private veranda and bathroom with hot showers, swimming pool, a small shop for essentials and a restaurant serving a good selection of local dishes.

A huge estancia (ranch) makes the perfect location for a wildlife lodge in this part of the southern Pantanal. The area is famous for the hyacinth macaws that live around the property and although they are very rare in most parts of the world (and even in most of the Pantanal), here they are easy to spot. Accommodation is spread between 4 small lodges and all 3 rooms are of equal standard. Separate lodges can be requested for their position - one of the lodges is within the central area near reception while the other two have more remote locations deeper in to the grounds of the estancia. Each of the lodges has a pool, rooms with fans and air-conditioning as well as en-suite facilities. Communal areas are rustic yet of a very high standard with a T.V. room (wildlife videos are a favourite choice) and communal dining areas. All stays at the lodge include 3 daily activities according to the schedule of the lodge - one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. Daytime activities include guided walks, photo-safari, canoe trips and horse riding. Evening activities include night walks, ‘cowboy’ barbecues and expert naturalist lectures on the various aspects of the Pantanal. The grounds contain all you’d expect of a working ranch as well as a small exhibition of the Pantanal, helping to explain the wildlife, climate and geography of the region. A large amount of wildlife abounds within the perimeter, living alongside the tens of thousands of cattle which are the life blood of the local population. A glimpse of the majestic Jaguar, for so long the Pantanal’s most elusive and enigmatic resident, would be a truly unforgettable experience.

Useful Notes Pantanal Seasons The Flooding (Oct-Dec) Vegetation begins to flower and is mating time for the majority of the animals. Most transport is by boat, horse or on foot. The skies are cloudy but the days are long – presence of mosquitoes!

The Flood (Jan-Mar) Concentration of mammals in small non-flooded areas. The days are longer and despite it being the ‘wet season’ there is only about 1 hour of rainfall per day. Most transport is done by canoe or boat (Jan – Mar). Flora springs to life and the caiman start nesting.

The Emptying (Apr – Jun) Concentration of reptiles and birds in the small water pools. Caiman hatch. Big bird colonies are formed. Cooler nights. The Dry (Jul-Sep) Concentration of birds and reptiles in the remaining water pools. Winter climate and abrupt temperature changes. Easy access to the lodges. Poor visibility due to dust and smoke and no rain.

Pantanal Wildlife There are 230 varieties of fish in the Pantanal, including the flesh-eating piranha. Some species weigh up to 90 kilos. Over 600 species of birds populate the area, including the hyacinth macaw, toucan and jabirú stork, standing well over 4 feet tall. Animals include giant and collared anteaters, armadillos, howler monkeys, coatis, giant river otters, marsh deer, anacondas, ocelots and pumas. The caiman (alligator) is a resident and visitors can also see tejú (a huge lizard), capybara (the world’s largest rodent) and, if you are extremely fortunate the very rare and beautiful Jaguar, largest of the South American cats.

Brazil has 55,000 species of higher class plants, more than any other country in the world. Here is the third largest concentration of avifauna (1,622 species), the fourth largest concentration of amphibians (517 species), the largest concentration of reptile species (467), the second largest concentration of mammals (527) and 27% of the world’s primates.

Bonito The area is characterised by the crystal clear spring water which flows in the rivers and is filtered through the limestone rocks from the nearby highlands. Caves and waterfalls make this an exciting place to experience some of Brazil’s most interesting landscapes and ecosystems. Bonito is an ideal choice to combine with the southern area of the Pantanal (page XXX). Located approximately 3 hours by road from Campo Grande lies the Refugio Ecologico Caiman; approximately 3 hours from there is the Zagaia and to return to Campo Grande from here takes approximately 3 hours. The town of Bonito itself is a small, charming place with a few small hotels and is the headquarters of Impacto tours who handle the transfers and activities within the area. Activities include, among others, the absolute ‘must-see’ natural aquariums of Rio Prata and Rio Sucuri where

snorkelling in the spring water reveals an underwater world which most visitors to the forest are oblivious to. The huge caves and rock formations are very impressive and a range of picturesque waterfalls are ideal for excursions. Infrastructure in the area is good and safety levels are exemplary. Adventure sports are very popular here with pot-holing and cave-diving (scuba-diving in vast underground caves) being high on the list. Walkers and bird watchers will relish the abundance of forested areas which provide the ideal habitat for countless species of birds and other animals.

Although this is a large hotel, it excels in personal service, making it perfect for our programme. The accommodation itself is located either in the main building or in one of the outer ‘wings’. Rooms are functional with air-conditioning and television as well as mini-bar and en-suite facilities. All rooms are spacious. The communal areas of the hotel are excellent with a beautiful pool, sauna and Jacuzzi area.

The restaurant serves breakfast and dinner while snacks are available for lunch. Service at the hotel is faultless and the location, nestled among the lush, forested hills which characterise the region, is superb - especially at sunset. The property also has its own trails in the forest and activities above and beyond those booked in advance, such as canopy tours or abseiling and climbing can be arranged at reception.

Brazil Brasilia and Chapada dos Veadeiros

Brasilia

Chapada dos Veadeiros

Located in the centre of Brazil, it is the political heart of the country and is often overlooked by visitors. However, it is the gateway to the interior of Brazil and offers its own unique attractions.

The National Park of the Chapada dos Veadeiros, 200 kilometres to the north of Brasilia is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Park is recognized as a World Natural Heritage site by UNESCO due to the importance of the high altitude environment as a unique area of bio-diversity.

Built in just 3 years in the late 1950’s to replace Rio de Janeiro as the nation’s capital, Brasilia has become famous for its modern architecture and it became the first modern city to be awarded the status of Cultural Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO. The city was designed along the ‘Pilot Plan’ (based on the shape of an airplane). The centre of the city is the main body of the ‘plane’ whilst the residential area runs along the ‘wings’. The architecture of the buildings looks like something out of the space age. Each area of the city has been assigned a specific function. In the political district you will find the Presidential Palace, Congress and the Supreme Court which are examples of some of the most impressive modern day architecture. There are also a number of art galleries and theatres to visit. Internal flights often go via Brasilia however, it is an ideal place to stop and spend one or two nights before moving on to regions such as Chapada dos Veadeiros.

This is a modern and comfortable hotel, equipped with many modern amenities. The hotel has a pool, gym and sauna. There is a choice of two restaurants and three bars within the hotel. 210 Sunvil Traveller

The landscape is punctured by fast flowing rivers and interesting rock formations which create natural swimming pools. Canyons and waterfalls abound, rewarding even a moderately ambitious hike with the opportunity to ‘cool off’ under their powerful spray. The best way to see the park is on foot and different lengths of walk are on offer. We can tailor your trek to suit your desired level of difficulty. We are happy to work with Travessia Ecoturismo, a local company which will take care of all your needs in the area while actively working to help the community and preserve the environment of the Chapada.

A visit to the Chapada dos Veadeiros will include a tour of Brasilia and an overnight stay. The national park is a three hour transfer from here. Pousada accommodation is in Alto Paraiso or São Jorge on the edge of the park as there is no development within the park itself. Daily activities start and finish here. The area has also become known as a spiritual centre for those wishing to experience the ‘strong earth energy’ of the Cerrado Alto and the towns offer health foods, massage, and a generally relaxed atmosphere.

Brazil Manaus & The Amazon

Manaus

The Amazon

Manaus is the capital of the Amazonas state and located in the Amazon jungle at the junction of Rio Negro and Solimoes River. It is the main gateway for visitors to the Amazon.

The Amazon Basin is known to have been formed in the Paleozoic period, between 500 million and 200 million years ago. The region covers over one billion acres encompassing half of the country of Brazil and areas of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Due to its commercial links throughout Latin America – Manaus has experienced an economic boom which has resulted in considerable renovation and it is now a pleasant place to stay. The elegant opera house and large mansion buildings of the historical centre reflect the wealth of the city during the 19th Century rubber boom.

The hotel is the largest luxury resort in Brazil located on the shores of the Rio Negro, surrounded by greenery and a small zoo, housing over 100 native Amazonian creatures. All the rooms are en-suite with direct dial telephone, television, air conditioning balcony or terrace and a safe. The hotel has a pool, gymnasium, health club, tennis courts and restaurant. The hotel is used as a pick up point for transfers to the Amazon Ecopark Lodge, therefore it is often necessary to overnight there. If you have less time available you can stay at the hotel and do day trips to the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ and into the jungle.

If Amazonia were a country, it would be the ninth largest in the World. The Amazon rainforest is often described as the “Lungs of the Planet” because it is continuously recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen and in doing so provides 20% of world oxygen. One fifth of the World’s fresh water is to be found in the Amazon Basin. The magnificent Amazon River is the life force of the Amazon rainforest and flows more than 4000 miles across the South American continent; starting as a trickle high in the snow capped Andes

mountain range and ending at the Atlantic Ocean where the river measures 200 to 300 miles wide, depending on the season.

Brazil The Amazon

The plight of the Amazon In the period of one year, 13,100 square kilometres of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest disappeared, adding to a total deforested area of 700,000 square kilometres; approx. 17% of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. Such destruction has a devastating effect on wildlife (leading to possible extinction of certain species), the loss of valuable biodiversity in the region, and a negative impact on the lives of indigenous tribes and global climate change. Deforestation has taken place to make way for construction of highways and creation of homesteads for a growing population hoping to build a better life. Although the Amazon has many natural riches, only 17% of the whole region is suitable for sustained agriculture therefore many hopeful inhabitants, including cattle ranchers moved closer to larger cities leaving land for the loggers to move in.

In the 1980’s, the Brazilian government provided incentives to multinational timber and mining firms to exploit the Amazon as a way of repaying international debt incurred by 20 years of military rule. In 1988, the assignation of Chico Mendes, a prominent opponent of rainforest destruction created a turning point and brought International focus to the importance of the area. Despite difficulties, today, the current government in Brazil have implemented state level protected areas, parks and reserves and are working to achieve a target of 500,000 square kilometres of protected area in Amazonia by 2012. Brazil Salvador

Salvador The capital of the state of Bahia and Brazil’s third largest city. It offers an exciting mix of pulsating musical rhythms, Colonial buildings, beautiful beaches and African culture. Many consider the 4 day carnival to be the best in Brazil. The city is located on a peninsula and stands on the enormous bay of Todos os Santos, the largest bay in Brazil and second largest in the World. The city has so much to offer the visitor! From the moment of arrival, there is an ‘electric’ atmosphere and a creative energy expressed in the regional music, cuisine and capoeira; a stylized art form of combat which is fast becoming popular outside Brazil.

Salvador is a stunning, vibrant city where you will find Brazil’s oldest churches and some of the most beautiful colonial architecture. There is a very obvious African influence and the resultant mix of races, colours and cultures epitomises what Brazil stands for today. The state of Bahia is one of the most popular destinations for visitors owing to over 1000km of coconut-fringed beaches and a weather forecast of ‘hot and sunny’ practically every day!

Estrela Community Project Part of the Travel Foundation • Brazil Estrela is a British-Brazilian charity based in Salvador. For over 10 years, the charity has worked in partnership with local community initiatives with the aim of benefitting disadvantaged communities by bringing people together from different cultures, and educating them about Brazilian culture. With support from the Travel Foundation, Estrela has developed grass roots community tours that enable tourists to interact and engage with local Afro-Brazilian women and youths. At present there are five community initiatives that tourists can visit and they include; a women’s health and cultural group, a socio-educational initiative with children, a youth citizenship network, a performing arts and training project with young adults with learning difficulties and a youth performing arts group. The tours not only provide a culturally rich experience for travellers, but allow people from the community

In Salvador, the focus is on the more contemporary side of carnival culture with African and electronic music taking centre stage. Brazil Salvador

Capoeira Capoeira began in Angola as a ritual fight and when slaves were brought over to Brazil from Africa in the 16th Century, this ritual was not permitted. The movements of the fight then evolved into a graceful art form of combat, known as the Afro-Brazilian marital art today. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints and extensive use of groundwork using sweeps, kicks and body-throws. There are regular displays of Capoeira in the city and Saturday is a good day to visit one of the many academies where you’ll find the best displays free of charge.

Brazil Chapada Diamantina

Chapada Diamantina Located approximately 300 kilometres northwest of the state capital (Salvador) is Lençois, the gateway to the Chapada Diamantina national park known as the Brazilian Grand Canyon. Accommodation is in this small, colonial, mining town on the edge of the park. Lençois is bisected by a stepped waterfall, making it a unique and beautiful place to stay. It is also an ideal base from where to start daily activities and excursions with a lively centre offering a selection of good, inexpensive restaurants and a welcoming place to return to - paradise after a long hike. The national park, founded in 1985, is just a small part of the Chapada (highlands) which itself covers an area larger than the Netherlands, an expanse of 38,000 square kilometres stretching as far south as Minas Gerais. It is a diverse park, encompassing swamps, valleys and mountains as well as spectacular waterfalls, rivers and caves. The area was named after the diamonds which, along with other gemstones, originally drew settlers to the area. Today the emphasis is on the remarkable beauty of the scenery and the feeling of vast open space that makes this

a must for walkers and nature lovers alike. A visit to this part of Brazil revolves around the trails which lead to various ‘attractions’ such as The Smoky Falls (Cachoeira Fumaça) where the wind from an enormous canyon blows Brazil’s 2nd highest waterfall (around 400 metres high) into a cloud of vapour that can be seen for miles. The landscape offers every level of walker the opportunity to reach a multitude of smaller waterfalls (some of which are ideal for a cooling dip) and it is also an ideal setting for other activities such as horse riding, mountain biking, climbing and abseiling. While most of the walking routes start and finish near Lençois, longer treks can be organised with overnight stays at guesthouses within the park. This gives the opportunity of getting further away from civilisation and experiencing the sheer scale of Brazil’s great outdoors.

Brazil Beaches near Salvador

Beaches near Salvador There are many beaches within reach of Salvador; we recommend Praia do Forte which is located approximately 1 hour by road from Salvador airport and the Marau Pennisula which is a 30 minute flight. Praia do Forte takes its name from the castle built by a Portugese settler in 1556; it was mainly a fishing village until eco-tourism and the well known turtle reserve developed in 1990’s. It remains a tranquil resort and great emphasis is placed on preservation of the area, the flora and fauna and the wildlife, particularly the sea turtles. Praia do Forte is also ideal for windsurfing and sailing due

to constant fresh Atlantic breezes. The Barra Grande village is the main village of the Marau Pennisula though home to only 500 residents. The beach is considered as one of Brazil’s most beautiful as it is frequented by few and features palm trees, coral reefs and calm waters, making it ideal for snorkelling or taking a boat trip to visit one of the 50 uninhabited islands nearby.

Useful Notes Tamar Turtle Project The Tivoli Eco Resort supports the protection of the environment, most notably the local turtle population. Environmental tours to the Tamar Turtle Project and to the ecologically-protected areas (accompanied by a biologist) are available.

Brazil Recife, Olinda & Porto de Galinhas

Recife & Olinda

Beaches near Olinda

The north east has the year round weather and Brazil’s best beaches. It is where the Brazilians from Rio and São Paulo holiday in what they consider to be their cold winter months from May to October (equivalent to a scorching summer for northern Europeans: 22°C to 26°C) and where the food, the music and the culture conjure up a heady and exotic mix.

60 kilometres south of Recife lies Porto de Galinhas, a small resort very reminiscent of the informality of nascent Greek resorts 20 years ago.

In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Pernambuco was the richest state in Brazil, thanks to sugar cane. The climate is tropical and the 190 km coastline a succession of beaches, for the most part protected from the Atlantic swell by banks of coral reef. You need not venture too deep in the water here in order to feel you are in a tropical aquarium. All that is needed is a mask.

Overlooking the ancient and modern city of Recife is Olinda, an open-air treasure chest of baroque art and architecture declared by UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site. It is a joy to walk through the ancient streets and sit at one of the many cafés. Its population of just over 370,000 swells to two or three times the size at carnival time.

Three stupendous beaches, Muro Alto, Porto de Galinhas and Maracaipe (renowned to surfers throughout the world) and a small informal fishing village full of restaurants, cafes and bars create a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. Most of the roads are still unmade and the local fishermen will take you out on their traditional Jangadas to view the millions of fish on the coral reef that protects the white sand beach of Porto de Galinhas. With good food and fabulous beaches, this is a first-class base for visiting Recife, Olinda and other parts of Pernambuco.

At carnival time the hotel is a great place from which to watch the procession.

Natal, ‘City of the Sun’ is a friendly, clean and safe place with wonderful beaches and is developing into the beach and leisure capital of the northeast. The city has few high-rise buildings, relatively little traffic and a good night life.

This is about as uncommercialised as one can find and is for those wanting to share Brazilian village life. This is a real discovery but only for those who can live without any of the trappings of luxury.

Just north of the city is the resort of Genipabu, where huge, rolling sand dunes set the scene for the most exhilarating of buggy rides which should not be missed.

Perched above the cluster of fishermen’s dwellings which border an idyllic beach the vila Bonita is perfectly located. Completed in 2004, the pousada has been the result of several years of hard work by Nelson, Maria and their son Edi who are the most welcoming and helpful of hosts. The Bonita is a simple oasis of tropical gardens, colourful birds, monkeys, hammocks, swimming pool, panoramic bar and an ambience that can only be Brazilian. The Pousada’s restaurant offers home cooked Brazilian dishes using a traditional wood oven and the breakfasts are a riot of tropical fruits.

Pousada Vila Bonita

Nelson organises or can book a variety of excursions and activities so that you can make the most of this idyllic spot which is surrounded by one of the largest fragments of Atlantic rainforest remaining in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

Brazil Rio Grande do Norte

Praia da Pipa 1 hour’s drive south from Natal. A multitude of beaches stretch out in each direction from Natal and Pipa, the main attraction of Tibau do Sul, has developed into a relaxed and informal resort, with many pousadas and some very good restaurants. Pipa is sleepy by day but lively and full of fun by night. There is a bohemian feel about the place, which attracts some very interesting characters. The beaches, interspersed with rocky outcrops, which stretch for many kilometres around this small peninsula

are spectacular, made even more dramatic by the backdrop of high cliffs plunging into the sea. Turtles and dolphins abound. This is a beach paradise and ideal for surfing, fishing, cycling, canoeing, boat trips on the sea as well as through mangroves, horse riding and, of course, buggy excursions which will take you anywhere.

Brazil Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara Ceara is the northernmost of the North Eastern states. It is a large state with 573 kilometres of coastline, much of it fabulous beaches, sand dunes and multi-coloured cliffs plunging into the sea. Here too, the beach buggy is king as much of the coastline can only be reached using this form of transport. Jericoacoara known locally as Jeri is 318 kilometres away, a 4 hour drive northwest of Fortaleza. This is a simple, unsophisticated village with a population of 1,500 in the middle of a national park, which because of the alliance between ecologists and fishermen, has succeeded in banning new construction or tourist development.

There are no overhead wires here, electricity has just arrived and the streets are of earth or sand. You stay in ‘Jeri’ for the friendliness, the beach, the sand dunes, the fish and a ‘desert island’ lifestyle. Its protected status has ensured that turtles nesting on the beaches and rare and endangered species are protected in the dunes and lagoons.

Useful Notes

BB

Mosquito Blue is directly located on Jericoacoara’s main beach overlooking the whole Jericoacoara Bay. The hotel has one entrance from the beach and another from the centre of the village just a few steps away from the restaurants, bars and shops. The landscaped gardens make for a peaceful environment to stay with both beach and village on the doorstep, literally! There is a free-form swimming pool and open air Spa, computer room, gaming room, boutique, and laundry service available to guests. A wonderful feature of the hotel is the bar and restaurant on the beach with a view across the sand dunes and the whole bay. The restaurant specialises in Italian and International cuisine.

222 Sunvil Traveller

There are 44 large rooms and suites, all individually and tastefully decorated, some with views of the landscaped gardens and pool and others, the spectacular sand dunes and ocean. Excursions including windsurfing, kayaking, kite surfing, fishing, boat trips can be arranged or simply enjoy the beach and wonderful location!

Camocin 369 kilometres - 5 hours drive northwest of Fortaleza

A very large fishing town of 55,000 Camocin has known better days. It is situated at the mouth of the Coreau River and its economy based on fishing and agriculture. In its heyday it was the centre of a large and well organised fishing industry and boasted a railway station. The seas were over-fished and the large trawlers disappeared leaving a cottage industry of 200 boats and 3,000 active fishermen. There are a couple of restaurants, many shops (not tourist boutiques) and a fascinating market. The town is safe and welcoming and appreciates visitors.

Brazil Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha Fernando do Noronha, a mountainous archipelago, is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the North East coast of Brazil. Consisting of 21 small islands, the area is divided into a National Marine Reserve and Environmental Proctected Area and since 2007 declared a UNESCO Site of Natural World Heritage. The warm waters off the coast of these islands make for a perfect environment for many fish, turtles, reef sharks and a breeding area for Spinner dolphins; ideal for snorkelling and considered one of the best places in the World for SCUBA diving due to the crystal waters. The main island of the same name is the only island inhabited and can be reached by flight from either Natal or

Recife. Accommodation here ranges from basic to elegant pousadas, although none are beach front in order to preserve the coast, some offer great views. The dry season, August – December is considered the best time for diving due to the crystal clear water and great visability.

A small, elegant pousada with large rooms laid out 2 to a cabin across a small complex of 12 rooms. The cabins each have a room upstairs and a room downstairs with both enjoying a large private terrace, overlooking the central pool area. The pousada has a good restaurant in wooded surroundings and guests can enjoy air conditioning, television, mini-bar and internet access (in reception). Staff are friendly and helpful and tours are easy to arrange.

BB

An historically protected site within walking distance of beaches and restaurants is the location for this comfortable, yet quirky pousada. The accommodation is found unsurprisingly, in a wooded valley near Remedios Village (only 10 minutes on foot). Run by an Italian family, much has been done to ensure that the gardens provide fruit and flavours for the kitchen. This includes the locally celebrated duck dishes created from ducks in permanent residence within the grounds of the accommodation. The ducks are roasted and enjoyed on the terrace.

BB

Enjoying some of the best views of any pousada on the island, the Solar dos Ventos has 9 simple, stand-alone bungalows. The bungalows have en suite bathroom (shower only) and air-conditioning as well as a small terrace. Bungalows are well spaced making this one of the more spread out of our featured pousadas, offering high levels of privacy and tranquility.

This pousada has a wonderfully friendly atmosphere and air-conditioned rooms (some with terraces) as well as internet access in reception, and all rooms have en suite São Luis facilities with fantastic mosaics in the showers. Real Brazil 223

Brazil A Few Guidelines

Brazil - A Few Guidelines Currency

Vaccinations / Health

Hotel Gradings

The monetary unit is the REAL, (plural, REAIS) and this unit is split into 100 centavos or cents. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and $US are also accepted in some places if you have no Reais readily available but the rate of exchange will not be competitive. Dollar travellers’ cheques are changed at hotels and banks. There are ATM machines but they do not all always work with European cards even if they display a Visa or Mastercard symbol. Make sure you have cash and small denominations which are very handy for tips.

Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio (for small children) and Hepatitis ‘A’ vaccinations are advisable and yellow fever (10 days to become effective) is recommended when visiting the states of Acre, Amazonas, Amapa, Distrito Federal, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso do Sul, Para, Rondonia, Roraima and Tocantins.

Much of Brazil’s accommodation is in small pousadas and, as such. These do not have hotel gradings. The standard of accommodation featured by us is of acceptable European level and where more basic accommodation is used (i.e. in parts of the Pantanal) then this is pointed out in the individual property descriptions.

An international certificate of vaccination against polio is compulsory for children aged between 3 months and six years and for yellow fever for those who, during the last three months, have visited Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Columbia, Congo, Ecuador, French Guyana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Venezuela and Zaire.

Weather / When To Go

Visas UK passport holders do not need visas for travel to Brazil for stays up to 90 days, but make sure you have at least six months to run on your passport.

Language Brazilians speak Portuguese. English is not widely spoken, especially once outside the main cities. However, communication with Brazilians is not difficult, as they will want to help.

Food & Drink Reference is made to the regional cuisine under each individual area. Food is good and very cheap in Brazil, with a wide variety of tastes according to the region. Exotic fruits are also bountiful. Beer, cocktails, fruit juices are preferred - not so much wine.

226 Sunvil Traveller

In areas such as the Pantanal and Amazonia and especially during the rainy season you will also need to take a course of malaria tablets and reduce mosquito bites by using a repellent. We also recommend the use of a waterproof sun-block to protect your skin against the strong tropical sun. The heat and humidity of the tropics make you perspire and can also make you feel lethargic. Make sure you drink plenty of liquids and especially water. Use bottled water and make sure that the seal on the bottle has not been broken. You should always check with your doctor for the latest health requirements no later than 4 weeks before your departure.

Climatic details are given for each of the areas featured by us in the individual descriptions. In the far south the temperature can be very similar to northern Europe with frosts occurring in the winter In most other areas the temperatures will vary between 20°C and 40°C depending on the time of the year and location. The official seasons are as follows: Spring: 22 September to 21 December Summer: 22 December to 21 March Autumn: 22 March to 21 June Winter: 22 June to 21 September

Time Most areas in Brazil are three hours behind Greenwich Meantime and a few are four. Brazil has ‘summer time’ clock changes too. From late February to October Brazil will be four hours behind UK local time and from October to March (depending when clocks change in the UK and Brazil) Brazil will be 2 hours behind UK local time.

Flying Times We for international and domestic flights the time taken for the most direct route has been chosen.
