Annual Report

2000

Greetings from the Desk of the President •

Sometime in the early fall I will be articulating to Brandon University and the extended community the elements of our strategic plan titled SCOPE 2020. In this document I will outline our vision, mission, goals, objectives and strategies for achieving success in the coming years. It will encompass Scholarship and Research, Communications, Outreach, Performance and Accountibility, and the Environment. In parallel, I have been working with the Development Office to organize objectives and foci for a University campaign, which will merge with the major elements of SCOPE 2020. Fundamental to our future success is the support and work of the Brandon University Foundation and the Department of Development and Alumni Relations. This year has been focused on Annual Giving, Major Gifts, and Planned Giving.Things have gone

Dr. Louis P. Visentin President and Vice-Chancellor

well and we are now ready to move to a new stage. This means mobilizing plans and people for a major campaign. I look forward to working with the Foundation to make this a reality. I know we have a good team in place and dedicated staff to initiate and organize the process. My first eight months at Brandon University have been an organizational phase. I have initiated a number of changes in governance, communications, administration and recruiting. I have met with many alumni and community leaders throughout southwestern Manitoba, to explain the “NEW BU” approach and SCOPE 2020. I look forward to continuing this level of activity with the larger Brandon University community in order to make our institution “Something Special” in Western Canada and beyond.

Message from the President of the Brandon University Foundation Since the last Brandon University Foundation Annual Meeting in May 2000 there has been a great deal of activity. We have had the pleasure of welcoming a new University President and ViceChancellor. Our “Success in Mind”scholarship and bursary campaign was received exceptionally well with outstanding results. We have also been delighted with the quality of several new and vibrant members to our Foundation Board. Throughout my term as Foundation President, I was proud to see the growth that resulted from the collective involvement of our members. Their diligent efforts in working with the Development and Alumni Relations Office have enabled us to develop or enhance many new and existing programs and services at Brandon University. By reaching out to the community, the Foundation’s account value has increased to over $20 million,

with a disbursement value of over $1 million for 2000, based on our current 6% distrubution rate. Nearly $13 million has been disbursed to the University since the inception of the Foundation.

It should be made clear that the University makes a huge contribution to the culture and the economy of our community. Through their efforts, our volunteers can be proud of an enhanced quality of life across a broad public spectrum. In short, our Foundation is thriving. Today, we can look ahead to the future without the question of “where do we go from here?” We have a clearly defined direction that includes a renewed Annual Fund, the prestigious Presidents’ Circle, and a Planned Giving program. It is sincerely an honour to be a part of this continued growth. Ms Dale Severyn Foundation President

• BRANDON UNIVERSITY

The Prairie Dream “The sheaf of wheat in the BU crest represents the material blessings harvested from the agricultural origins of southwestern Manitoba” In October 1901, the original Brandon College building officially opened with little more than 100 students. Our school’s founders, members of the Baptist Convention of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, wanted to establish a college which would provide a solid, equal liberal arts education to the region’s young men and women. Their dream was a facility which offered access to all. In response to the demand for classroom space and residence facilities for women, Clark Hall and an annex, joining the buildings together, opened in 1906. More than 90 years later, the dreams and commitments of those pioneers of post-secondary education live on at Brandon University, and the buildings from which the University has grown still stand today as the centerpiece of a dynamic, inviting campus. These splendid facilities have grown to serve more than 2,700 students annually in both western Manitoba and northern locations and take in 20 buildings, five faculties, 30 academic departments, and a state-of-the-art library.

“The Brandon College building is a credit to our city and province, and thoroughly adapted to the purpose of instruction. The young people of Western Manitoba have in this institution 1904 Brandon Daily Sun splendid facilities within easy reach.”

Campus Life Our provincial slogan “Friendly Manitoba” underscores our focus on people and friendships. With a population of over 40,000, Brandon offers a perfect blend of city excitement and small town hospitality. The University offers many social activities and services such as campus recreation and sports, student council, socials, daycare, bookstore, film festival, free Internet access and student-run lounges and clubs. Building on core strengths of small class sizes and tenured faculty, Brandon University scored seven top-10 placements in the Maclean’s 2000 magazine survey of Primarily Undergraduate universities across Canada. Brandon University continues to be ranked number one for its small class sizes at the third and fourth year levels.Working closely with professors provides senior students with ideal opportunities to participate directly in original research. This research has been highly recognized by agencies such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Canada Council, and has earned Brandon University an overall number five ranking in the area of Social Sciences and Humanities grants.

A Vision For the Future Established from a Solid Foundation of the Past Universities are recognized by among many things, their visual images. Indeed, the visual identity at Brandon University involves more than replacing old images with new. It is an attempt to ensure that others see us as we see ourselves – a cornerstone in our community delivering the highest quality of education, programming, outreach services and research expertise. The new visual identity at Brandon University was developed in 1999 and was designed in a way that captures the traditions and strengths of our founders with the collective energy and vision of our members and friends.

ATTRACTING MINDS – LEADERS OF THE FUTURE

Success in Mind Campaign “The antique lantern on the BU crest symbolizes eternal light, life, divinity, wisdom and intellect – all of which are timeless beliefs rooted in the University’s mission.” Campaign a Success! As of December 31, 2000, Campaign Chairman Dr. Don Penny and fellow Campaign Cabinet members raised $3,049,995.51 from private sources for scholarship/bursary endowments and research initiatives. Funds raised were matched dollar for dollar by the University through its allocation from the Manitoba Scholarships and Bursaries Initiative, and through other sources. With the matching funds, a total of over $6.4 million was added to BU’s scholarship and bursary endowments. With the new funds, approximately $600,000 will be available every year from the interest on

the endowments, doubling what was previously available for student awards.

Generosity of Students Saluted by BU Campaign Chair On April 19th, 2000 Brandon University students agreed to make a major contribution – expected to total over $330,000 in the next three years – to the Success in Mind fundraising campaign. Campaign Chair, Dr. Don Penny, said he was “absolutely delighted at the students’ commitment and foresight.” The student’s contribution, when matched under the Manitoba Scholarships and Bursaries Initiative (MSBI), will create a pool of well over $600,000 towards the establishment of bursaries on campus. Half of the capital in this pool will be capitalized into an endowment

and expensed at a rate of 6% per year, funding in perpetuity 35 – 40 bursaries of $500 each. The other half of the pool will be expensed directly each year, creating an additional 200 or more $500 annual bursaries to assist students in financial need.

Brandon University Faculty Association Supports Student Scholarships at BU In the true tradition of faculty helping students, the Brandon University Faculty Association (BUFA) made a substantial contribution to student scholarships by donating $30,000 toward the Brandon University Faculty Association Scholarship Fund. The Fund will generate six awards of $600 to be given annually to a student in

Monsanto Creates Scholarship for Pre-Agriculture Students

Hutterians Show Strong Support for Education The Manitoba Hutterian Community has generously created one of the largest endowments of the recent Success in Mind Campaign.Their $250,000 commitment is testimony to their belief in quality education and is a strong endorsement of the success of the Hutterian Education Project (BUHEP). The BUHEP program has been tailored to the specific needs of its participants. The location and timing of the program has been adapted to fit the cultural needs of the Hutterian Community. In fact, one third of the course load is taught directly on the colonies to ensure that student needs and Hutterian family values are honoured. Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of the BUHEP program is the preparation of Hutterite students to contribute and to lead within their own communities.

The students in Brandon University’s Pre-Agriculture program will benefit, in perpetuity, through the community-minded generosity of Monsanto Canada.Their contribution of $25,000, which when matched by the province of Manitoba through its Manitoba Scholarships and Bursaries

ENLIGHTENING THE MINDS OF TODAY WITH A VISION FOR TOMORROW

Research Infrastructure “The two opened books on the BU crest represent the learning and arts of mankind. They underscore our commitment to teaching, research and community service.” Brandon University is committed to the development and enhancement of research infrastructure. Our faculty members have discovered new cash crops that suit our climate and growing conditions, studied and made recommendations on community mental health services, and explored ways of preserving and reconstructing original land cover. As an institution, we are poised to utilize our academic resources in the pursuit of research that is relevant to our region and to our institutional mandate. In keeping with our commitment to developing our research programs, Brandon University has recently attracted a number of energetic academics with a wide variety of research interests and strengths. Not only does this provide opportunities for community and industry partnerships in the future, it also gives students a chance to participate first hand in ground-breaking projects under the guidance of some of our country’s leading experts in their fields.

New Resources Geology Lab Tundra Oil and Gas Ltd. provided a $75,000 gift toward research of sedimentology and reservoir geology of oil-bearing horizons in the sub-surface of the Manitoba portion of the Williston Basin. The
