COMMUNITY, CULTURE AND WELL-BECOMING Kevin Lamoureux, Instructor, University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba

Kevin Lamoureux is an instructor at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, a wellknown public speaker, a writer, and co-host of the popular podcast The Frank and Kevin Show: In Colour (a free, sometimes funny resource on topics of Indigenous education and politics). Most recently Lamoureux was named co-Chair for the Provincial Task Force on Educational Outcomes for Children in Care. His writing has been featured in the Winnipeg Free Press, Grassroots News and many academic journals. He has been seen on local television (including APTN and the CBC news), heard around the world through his podcast (which is downloaded in over a dozen different countries), and he has given presentations around the globe (from Australia, to Thailand, parts of Europe, the United States and throughout Canada). Lamoureux was named Scholar in Residence and Divisional Day Speaker for the Seven Oaks School Division, Diversity Coach for Sunrise School Division, Divisional Day Speaker for St. James School Division and works closely with several other school divisions, districts and organizations around the province. Kevin Lamoureux is working towards his PhD in the University of Manitoba's Wellness and Sustainability cohort. He works closely with schools throughout Manitoba in support of Aboriginal education and the inclusion of Aboriginal perspectives; enrichment and talent development, as well as working with troubled and disengaged students. He is the recent recipient of the Aboriginal Circle of Educators Honouring Our Ways award, the Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance as nominated by his colleagues, the University of Winnipeg's Merit Award, the International Center for Innovation in Education (ICIE) Young Scholar Award, and UNE's Merit award for outstanding academic performance. As a member of the Faculty of Education's ACCESS community, he works directly with preservice teachers preparing for careers in the inner city. Canada is moving into an age of reconciliation, in which our nation’s citizens have the opportunity to fully embrace values of social justice, equity and integrity as we reclaim our true identity as a country. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission offered 94 calls to action as a roadmap towards true reconciliation. Many of these recommendations centred on education as a means of creating empathy and understanding, and of righting historical wrongs. Today, educators across the country are exploring ways to incorporate Indigenous histories, perspectives and experiences in a way that moves beyond tokenism into authentic learning that empowers learners to create change. This session will focus on an inclusive approach to reflecting values of Truth and Reconciliation in teaching practice that allows all students to enjoy a sense of belonging. Suitable for all Grades, Administrators, Resource, EAs and Counsellors 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Maximum number of participants 100) COST: $50.00 LOCATION: LECTURE THEATRE CROCUS PLAINS

ENGAGING STUDENTS BY PLANNING WITH FIDELITY Linda Jameson, Learning and Development Specialist, Brandon School Division

I have been working with teachers supporting planning and looking at how to keep students engaged for about five years. I am presently completing my second masters in Special Education. The more I work with great educators the more fascinated I become with how our brains work and what it takes to encourage students to become self-motivated learners. Planning takes time; I have created a template with reminders of all of the aspects of good planning. We often plan without the summative created or the rubric to guide our learning and “how am I going to keep the students engaged?” I will share hints other educators have shared with me and hopefully there will be some ideas you will want to use in your planning and in your classroom. 54b) LE JOURNAL EN CLASSE – SESSION B Dave Bebbington, Teacher, Brandon School Division

THIS SESSION IS CANCELLED I'm very lucky to still be teaching French at the same school where I started back in 1974. I love applying new technology to language learning and especially enjoy making up activities to use with the articles in Le Journal de Montréal. I have recently had the pleasure of teaching the Appels/Excels program at Brandon University. In my spare time, I like to travel, play golf and ref soccer. I'm married and have three or four daughters. I'm originally from St. Bruno on the South Shore of Montreal although I'm a product of (Basic) French. "Teaching only gets boring if YOU let it." Although treating the same theme as found in Session A (the morning session), this session is geared more toward grades 11 and 12. As such, it deals more with using newspaper articles to create interesting and topical reading activities. After briefly discussing the components of an effective reading lesson, teachers will choose an article and create a complete lesson to be shared with other participants at the end of the session (make-and-take). NOTE: It is recommended that participants subscribe to the free online edition of Journal de Montreal ahead of time although there will be many available articles to work on during the session. NOTE: Session A is not a pre-requisite. Suitable for Grades 11 and 12 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
