AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND About Australia & New Zealand

DEBBIE FORTNUM [email protected]

My Activities

Australia and New Zealand have over 11,000 people on dialysis and are renowned world-wide for their home dialysis programs. 30% of patients in Australia are using either peritoneal dialysis (21%) or home haemodialysis (9%). 49% of patients in New Zealand are dialysing at home, with 15% on home haemodialysis. Home dialysis programs are traditionally managed by trained nurses with medical support for dialysis prescriptions and a general three monthly clinical review only. There are no age restrictions in Australia for starting dialysis but those who are in frail health are offered the option of supportive care rather than dialysis. The general philosophy is shared decision-making regarding treatment options. The three key areas for improvement are:  increasing the rate of native vascular access at commencement of haemodialysis  decreasing the rate of peritonitis for those on peritoneal dialysis  Increasing the rate of live donors for transplantation Many units are making improvements and data monitoring is a key part of this process.

The key activity in Australia this year has been a huge contribution to the new EDTNA/ERCA “500 questions about Peritoneal Dialysis” handbook. A team of Australian and New Zealand nurses have contributed and reviewed content:  Janis Powell  Sandra Handy  Lisa Pacquin  Margot Gillies  Julie Reynolds 

Serena Frasca

I have had the pleasure of working with Aase Reimann as the co-author and Maria Garcia-Cruz who has worked tirelessly to support every aspect of development of this book.  Monthly updates about the EDTNA/ERCA have been placed in the Renal Society News Bulletins  Monthly emails have been sent to the Australian and New Zealand members detailing the latest developments or updates from the EDTNA/ERCA  Information about the EDTNA/ERCA has been provided at the RSA annual conference and two state education sessions  English review have been done of all publications/newsletters

CZECH REPUBLIC About Czech Republic

My Activities

Since the fall of communism in 1989 and the opening up of Central and Eastern Europe, the Czech Republic and its capital (Prague) in particular has evolved into one of Europe’s most popular travel destinations. Prague offers an intact medieval core that transports you back 500 years. The 14th-century Charles Bridge, traversing two historic neighborhoods, is one of the continent’s most beautiful sights. The city is not just about history though; it’s a vital urban centre with a rich array of cultural offerings.

VALENCIA

EDTNA/ERCA Members from Spain presenting papers at the 45th EDTNA/ERCA International Conference in Valencia Chronic Kidney Disease is an important public health problem 

According to the EPIRCE results, designed to know the prevalence of the Chronic renal disease in Spain and promoted by the Nephrology Spanish Society (SEN) with the support of Healthy and Consumption Ministry, it was estimated that around a 10% of the adult population suffered of renal condition in different grades and roughly 6,8% were sufferers of the According to the EPIRCE results, designed to know the prevalence of the Chronic renal disease in Spain and promoted by the Nephrology Spanish Society (SEN) with the support of Healthy and Consumption Ministry, it was estimated that around a 10% of the adult population suffered of renal condition in different grades and roughly 6,8% were sufferers of the 3-5 stages. (2)

Over 4 million of Spanish people suffer of Chronic renal disease. About 50,909 of them are on renal replacement therapy, a half on dialysis and the rest are living with a working renal replacement. However, the datum of the prevalence shows that a 43,8% of the patients on renal replacement therapy are in HD, a 50,78% living with a replacement and only a 5,4% on DP.

Because of the aging population and the rise of risk factors as cardiovascular diseases, the Diabetes Mellitus, the Hypertension, the obesity and renal disease early diagnosis, the prevalence of Chronic renal disease is increasing. In Europe, has been established an annual rate of 5% increase approximately. (2). Otero A, de Francisco A, Gayoso P, García F, EPIRCE Study Goup. About United Arab Emirates

My Activities

The United Arab Emirates was founded 43 years ago largely due to the efforts of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, now deceased, who is referred to as the founding father. It is comprised of seven Emirates of which Abu Dhabi, the Capital, is the largest the others being Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ajman, Umm Al Quain and Ras Al Khaimah. The population is in the region of 8 million of which 20% are Emirati the remainder being expatriates from more than 190 different countries worldwide. People are very young with >80% being under the age of 40 years. It is a very tolerant westernised society, with little crime, a lovely climate (9 months of the year) and overall a great place to live and work. Despite the young population CKD is common effecting more than 20% of the population. The dialysis population (around 1200 patients in Abu Dhabi ) the majority treated by high volume, on-line HDF is set to double every 5 years. The predominant cause of renal disease is diabetes which effects 20% of the population, one of the highest rates worldwide

 Presentations and workshops at EDTNA MEA Symposium in Lisbon 2015  Study Days for Renal Nurses in Abu Dhabi  Establishment of Renal Education Abu Dhabi (READ) a professional forum to raise educational opportunities for all nurses in the region
