February 7, 2014 Emily Dickinson Classes Partner with ROC Wheels First graders in Mrs. Arrington’s class and fifth graders in Ms. Bellingham’s class teamed up in January to raise money to buy ROC wheelchairs for children in an impoverished area of Mexico. Both classes learned about the similarities and differences between Montana and Mexico then used this information to design, glaze, and sell decorative trivets symbolic of each region. Fifth graders also sold rubber band bracelets as part of their fundraising efforts. With the help of ROC and parent volunteers, the two classes participated in the actual construction of two of the five chairs they were able to purchase. Thank you to our entire Emily Dickinson community to aid in our efforts to reach out to others! Students taking M132, Math for Elementary Teachers, wrote pen pal letters to our 5th grade classes. The purpose of the pen pal letters was to develop meaningful dialogue about mathematics by giving kids a genuine reason to communicate about the math they are learning. It is a unique opportunity for both the university students learning how to teach math, as well as the 5th graders who gained experience developing their written communication skills. The 5th graders had the opportunity to ask the university students questions to help them better understand the mathematics and give them practice, explaining concepts to students. We really feel this partnership is a win-win and are looking forward to the positive potential it will bring. (submitted by Sharon Navas)
