Dear Parent/Guardian, Welcome to Boronia K-12 College. Our College was established in 2012 following the merger of Boronia Primary School, Boronia Heights College and the Allandale Kindergarten. In 2013, students in Years 8 – 12 will complete their year at our Mount View Campus, whilst students in Kindergarten to Year 7 will complete their year at our Rangeview Campus. We envisage moving all students to our Rangeview campus in 2014 once our Stage 2 facilities have been completed. Our College is organised into 3 distinct Stages of Learning as follows: 1. The Early Years 2. The Middle Years 3. The Later Years

Kindergarten to Grade 4 Years 5 - 9 Years 10 -12

The Vision of our College is to provide a safe, supportive and stimulating learning environment that engages and challenges students and adults to love learning, experience success and be effective and caring members of the global community. The Vision of our College is underpinned by the following Values:

4

The implementation of these Values relies on the development of positive relationships between all members of our College community. As a relational community we place a great emphasis on nurturing the following 5 key relationships: 1. Students feeling positive about themselves and their ability to learn and succeed. 2. Students being able to interact co-operatively with other students. 3. Students being engaged with their learning and understanding its relevance to their own lives and the wider community. 4. Students having a positive relationship based on mutual respect with their teacher/s. 5. Supportive and constructive relationships between the home, the school and the local community. Our students are supported in their learning journey through a pastoral care system, which caters to their relevant stage of learning. This ensures that every student feels confident that there is someone taking an active interest in his or her social, emotional and academic development. Our classroom programs are shaped by a belief that high quality learning occurs when:  The learning is personalised, assessed regularly and supported by high expectations.  A safe and orderly learning environment exists.  Students are actively engaged with their learning. st  21 century digital tools are used effectively, ethically and productively.  There are opportunities and pathways for all students to achieve success.  There is a genuine and supportive partnership between the College, the home and the community. In our College, there is an understanding that everyone in our community is a leader and that we all have responsibilities to the learning process. Our challenge is to provide the opportunities, experiences and confidence for all students, staff and parents to build upon their own learning, develop their leadership capabilities and to assist others along the way. We are a uniform school and have high aspirations for, and expectations of, our students, staff and parents. We expect all members of our community to take responsibility for their actions and to be actively engaged in the learning process. The information contained in this booklet is designed to assist you to understand the operations and philosophy of the College. We want all parents to remain engaged with the learning of their son or daughter as they progress from kindergarten to year 12. Please read the booklet carefully and contact any member of the College’s Leadership Team should you have any queries in relation to the information contained in this booklet.

COST OF MATERIALS The high quality educational program offered by Boronia K-12 College: Mount View Campus is made possible through applied practice in all subject areas. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development instructs schools that basic materials and requisites for practical classes are covered by the curriculum budget. Therefore the cost of additional materials must be paid for by the students. Selected Studies that have a cost for additional materials are clearly marked on the selection forms, and many no-cost options are provided. Additional costs for optional subjects such as Food Studies, Timber and Photography are necessary in order to provide expensive materials not included in Government funding. College Council discusses and ratifies fees each year and these are kept as low as possible. However, where the payment for materials would create hardship, College Council has authorised the Business Manager to make alternative arrangements with parents to ensure that their children receive an appropriate education. Parents should make an application to the College for special consideration. In addition, the College provides the option for payments by instalments to assist parents with expenses. We request that all monies forwarded to the College be enclosed in a clearly labelled envelope. These should be handed in at the general office. Education is a most important investment in your children's future and should be supported in a positive manner.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE There are different types of financial assistance available to parents. The most frequently used are: Education Maintenance Allowance This is made available to low income families to assist in the payment of Education expenses for students in Years 7 - 10 up to the age of 16. Applications are made through the College. To be eligible parents/guardians must be a holder of a Pensioner Health Card, Health Care Card or Health Benefits Card. Youth Allowance This is a Commonwealth Government Scheme for students age 16 and above. It is based on adjusted family income. Applications need to be made through your local Centrelink office.

11

Orders should be placed directly with the supplier. Phone or submit online at www.campion.com.au . It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide their children with the appropriate resources to enable them to learn. Students are encouraged to keep their books in good order so they can be sold or exchanged with other students and/or used for a number of years. The College aims to keep the number of required texts to a minimum but also emphasises to parents the importance of purchasing these texts, which are essential to their child’s learning.

STUDENT PLANNER Students are expected to use their planners to record work deadlines, important dates, homework etc. and parents are encouraged to communicate with teachers by writing in the planner. We have book listed a generic planner to minimise costs for parents, and we expect that all students will have the planner at the start of the year. Parents are reminded that the planner is to assist the learning process and students should not use it to record social and personal information. Students may be asked to replace a planner which has been inappropriately used. The planner is available directly from Campion Education as part of your booklist order.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING Assessment is conducted in line with Victorian Essential Learning expectations and will transition in English, Mathematics, Science and History to AusVELS (Australian Curriculum) in 2013, which continues to be based on achievement, work habits and interpersonal skills. The purpose of reporting is to: -

communicate student progress to parents and students Report on achievements, strengths and weaknesses and to make Recommendations on improvement Report on level of performance enable parents and students to have a positive influence on learning

Detailed written reports are provided at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2. Interim reports are completed for all students in Term 1 and Term 3. In addition, Student/ Parent /Teacher Conferences are held in Term 1 and Term 3 to discuss student learning. Students set individual learning goals at the start of each semester and are expected to outline their progress against these goals during the S/P/T conferences. All parents and students are encouraged to attend these sessions. Progress reports may be issued if considered necessary throughout the year. Parents may request these at any time if they have concerns about their child’s progress.

ATTENDANCE There is a direct link between regular attendance at school and academic achievement. To support your child in experiencing educational success, please ensure that they attend all designated school days and that they are punctual. All absences must be reported to the College as soon as possible. When a student returns to College after an absence, a signed letter from a parent/guardian containing the following information: * Student's Name and Homegroup * Dates Absent * Reason for Absence Students are asked to give this letter to their home group teacher/ mentor when they return to the College.

12

For your convenience, the College has a designated absence line (ring 9760 4900 and select the appropriate option) where you may leave the above information which will be recorded and retained by the College in lieu of a note. Period by period attendance checks are carried out each day. Students absent without permission are issued with a consequence, usually an LRT (Learning Recovery Time). If you are intending to go on a vacation during term time please notify the College in advance and an Absence Learning Plan will be developed so your child does not fall behind. If your child is away with an extended illness a ‘study buddy’ will be designated, work collected and package(s) sent home to assist your child to keep up if they are able. Each case is dealt with individually. If you have a question or request please contact the College.

HOMESTUDY The College works with parents and guardians in a strong partnership to provide the best possible education for their children, helping them develop to their full potential and grow into responsible and happy young adults. Homestudy is an important part of the students’ educational program. The development of effective study, organisation and time management skills needs practice. Parents/guardians can help by establishing a suitable study location and a regular study time at home. The television should be turned off and telephone calls and social media are limited so that children can complete homework and study activities. A homestudy and activities timetable may assist older children organise their time. Home study activities can include: - Reading (textbooks, novels, newspapers and magazines) - Working on assignments - Organising folders - Watching relevant videos and researching on the internet - Visiting libraries - Revising work Most importantly, parents are encouraged to take an interest in their child’s day, asking questions, talking about world events and their plans for the future. Encouragement and help whenever possible are keys to good attitudes to study. We will be introducing a student email system which will enable homework tasks etc. to be emailed home. Individual subject teachers will provide regular homework to their students.

CAMPUS VISITS Parents are welcome at the College (by appointment) to meet the Campus Principal, Assistant Principal, Senior Program Leader and class teachers. Parents who have concerns with any aspect of College operations should contact the Campus Principal or Assistant Principal. If a meeting with either Principal or a member of staff is desired, please phone the College so that an appointment can be arranged.

EXCURSIONS As part of the College's educational program, excursions take place at all year levels throughout the year. Permission forms are sent to parents prior to these excursions and should be returned promptly as students are not permitted to participate without parental permission. The cost of excursions is kept to a minimum. All payments need to be finalised 48 hours before the excursion. Failure to do so may result in your child not being able to attend and/or cancellation of the excursion. A letter signed by the Campus Principal will always be sent home to inform you of special functions out of College hours or away from the College. If you do not receive written notification of an excursion or sporting activity, assume normal school activities will take place and send your child to school.

13

Privately organised student activities are not official College functions. Responsibility will not be accepted by the College for the conduct of these activities, or for any misadventure which may arise from such a function. Please contact the Campus to check the status of activities.

BORONIA K-12 NEWSLETTER A Newsletter is sent home every week with the youngest child in each family. Please ensure students bring this home. The Newsletter is an important way to communicate activities and forthcoming dates to parents. Copies are also available on our website and from the General Office.

DISMISSAL OF STUDENTS IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES If students are not required at the College because of Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s approved activities, industrial action, Extreme Fire Danger days or because of the prolonged loss of an essential service, a letter of explanation signed by the Executive Principal will be sent home with the students. Do not accept word of mouth messages from students as they may pick up incorrect information.

ACCIDENTS OR ILLNESS Students who are ill or injured should not be sent to school. Where the College believes that a student is unfit for school, either through illness, injury or because of a temporary condition, parents will be asked to collect their child from the College so that appropriate supervision can be provided. Students leaving the College due to illness must ensure that a member of staff approves this and has had contact with a parent. In cases of serious injury or illness, an ambulance will be called. Every attempt will be made to contact parents or guardians before this action is taken, unless in extreme emergency. In this instance parents/ guardians will be informed as quickly as possible of their child's condition and the actions taken by the College. We do strongly recommend that parents have Ambulance Cover, and School Accident Insurance. Please note: The College no longer dispenses paracetamol to students. If a child is taking prescribed medication that needs to be taken during the day, please send it to the General Office marked with student name, dosage and time to be taken and our First Aid trained staff will be happy to dispense it. We also ask parents to ensure that immunisation details are updated on the form included in your enrolment package. This information is essential in cases where there is an outbreak of serious infectious illness that requires parent notification, or possibly students to be sent home. It is vital that student enrolment forms are completed and returned to the College. Please make sure that telephone numbers and any emergency numbers remain current, and immediately inform the College of any changes in writing.

PHYSICAL DISABILITIES If a student suffers from any physical disability or illness that may affect participation in Campus activities, or may require particular attention by members of staff, please make this known to the College as soon as possible.

LUNCH PASSES Parents requiring students to come home each day for lunch should apply in writing to the Assistant Principal for a permanent lunch pass. Lunch passes are granted on the understanding that a parent will be home during lunchtime and that no other student will accompany your child. Lunch passes are not issued for students to “go to the local shop”. The pass will be revoked if conditions are not met.

14

LATE ARRIVALS / EARLY DEPARTURES Students who arrive late or need to leave early must report to the staff member on duty in Administration. Students who arrive late and do not have a valid reason will be given an automatic lunchtime detention, and a phone call to parents will be made if lateness continues. A note should be provided when students arrive late at the College, or the late slip they receive should be signed and returned to the home-group teacher/ mentor the next day. Early leavers must have a note explaining why they are leaving and they should sign out at the General Office. No student should leave the Campus without the permission of their Sub-School Leader or the Assistant Principal.

LEARNING RECOVERY TIME / COMMUNITY DUTY If a student receives an after school LRT or Community Duty, parents are notified in advance with a phone call and are asked to sign a form. It is the student’s responsibility to return the signed form to the teacher who has given the LRT/CD. LRT/CD normally runs from 3.10pm to 3.45pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Student Discipline Procedure, 1994 Section 4.1.3, states that students may be detained for up to forty-five minutes after school. Students are required to attend additional time after school as part of the agreed discipline procedures of Boronia K-12 College: Discipline and Welfare Policy.

CAREERS/PATHWAYS Careers advice and guidance is provided by the Pathways Coordinator. A variety of activities are organised as part of our Careers/Pathways policy. Work Experience is part of the curriculum for all Year 10 students. Students complete Work Experience for two weeks and are subject to a contract between themselves, their parents, the College and the employer. Before commencing Work Experience students must successfully complete “Safe at Work” modules online. Whilst on Work Experience, students are covered under the Work Cover Act by the State Government. Please contact the Pathways Coordinator for further details.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT HIRE Some musical instruments are available for hire through the College. A hiring fee and a bond, which is redeemable on return of the instrument, are required. Please discuss this with the Instrumental Music Coordinator.
