This Atlas sectional track is typical of how most model track is made, with nickel-silver rail attached to plastic tie strips. N scale code 55 track is shown in front and HO scale code 83 in back.
Some older track, like the Atlas HO code 100 section in front, has brass rail. Most new track uses nickel-silver rail (in back). Code 100 track typically has heavy spike detail.

T WO
Model track basics Model trackwork, as shown in this HO scale yard, must be carefully laid for reliability. Details such as paint and ballast enhance the realism of a scene.
Track is the foundation for your trains, and solid, well-laid trackwork is a necessity for having trains that operate smoothly, 1. Another key goal when laying track is realism. Since trains are the focal point of a layout, the track upon which they run should be as realistic in appearance as the locomotives and cars that run on it.
4
5
Rail joiners slide onto the base of abutting rails and are responsible for both track alignment and electrical contact at joints between sections.
Poor trackwork that causes derailments can take away the fun of operating trains and turn a model railroad into a big diorama. After all, who wants to spend time rerailing trains or worrying about trains making it through a turnout without jumping off the track? Some modelers are intimidated by the process of laying track, but this need not be the case. Derailmentfree operation is not a pie-in-the-sky goal—it is quite possible and should be the goal of every modeler building a layout. By taking your time and following some basic guidelines and proven techniques, you’ll be able to lay reliable, good-looking track. There are many brands and types of track on the market, and modelers

in HO and N scales especially have a wealth of options available. Having these choices can be rather daunting as you try to decide what type of track to use, but throughout this book, I’ll try to clear up any confusion as you make your choices in track.
Model track
Ready-to-use model track varies quite a bit in appearance from manufacturer to manufacturer, but most is made in a similar fashion with nickel-silver rail atop plastic tie strips, 2. Until the 1980s, a lot of model track was made with brass rail. If you shop around at swap meets, you’ll find a lot of brass track. You can tell the difference by color, 3. Nickel-silver is a dull silver color, while brass is a yellowish-gold color.
The biggest difference between the two—other than color—is conductivity. Brass conductivity is actually better (it offers less resistance to electricity) than nickel-silver, and when clean, brass and nickel-silver both work well. However, over a period of time, especially if trains aren’t run frequently, rail surfaces tend to oxidize. The oxide that quickly forms on brass is not conductive, which leads to erratic operation. Nickel-silver rail seems to oxidize slower, and the coating is more conductive. Because of this tendency, brass rail needs to be cleaned more frequently than does nickel-silver. The moral is to avoid brass track and stick with nickel-silver. The rails of model track are held in place on plastic tie strips. Tie strips

When converting from DC to DCC there are some wiring considerations to think about, 1. With DCC you can have more locomotives operating in a block, with DC you’re limited to just the locomotive you were running. With DCC you can have a locomotive or multiple locomotives in the same block operating with all the “bells and whistles” and lights. Even switch machines may be operating off the track power. About the time that the first edition of this book came out, Jim Betz and I had the experience of converting a medium-size double deck layout from DC to DCC. In this case wiring was marginally acceptable even for use on DC. This was a case where the wiring needed to be replaced, 2. Replacing the wire with a heavier gauge and adding drop down wires from the rails made a big improvement and stable DCC operation.

Rewire a DC layout?
SE V EN
Layout wiring The Tri-City Society of Model Engineers 1200 SQFT triple level layout is model of both the SP and WP in the San Francisco Bay area Niles Canyon area. The two railroads are independent of each other, requiring essentially two separate DCC systems sitting side by side.
In the early days of DCC, some suggested the process of wiring was simply connecting two wires to the rails. Another article on converting a layout to DCC instructed you to remove all DC wiring and rewire the whole layout. Much of which way depends on the gauge of the existing wire. In most cases, the answer lies between those two extremes. Connecting just two wires to the rails severely limits DCC flexibility. Ripping out all existing wiring and starting over may be a waste of time and money.
No two layouts are the same, and DCC requirements vary with each one. If converting from DC consider the scale and the number of operators. A small layout with one operator may get away with only the two-wiresto-the-rails solution. A club or home layout with several operators and lots of trains needs to be divided into several electrical blocks or districts to prevent a single short circuit or overload from shutting down the entire layout. I began converting my layout from cab control to DCC by connecting the DCC system in place of one of my DC power packs, 3. This provided the ability to operate on DCC, but still allowed DC operation. It gave me a chance to install decoders as time and money become available. However, trying to run DC and DCC on the same layout was a pain in the caboose!
2 DCC can put more power into the rails than DC. If there is too much resistance in the wiring and rails this could result in a failure for a short circuit to trip the circuit breaker. A good way to test existing layout wiring is the popular “quarter trick.” Place a quarter or other metal coin across the rails to short-circuit the system. A short should be detect, if it isn't detected you need to investigate. The test should repeated on rails about ever 3 feet. It’s especially important to do this test at the ends of your power bus runs. Undersized bus or feeder wires, excessive rail resistance, and too-few rail feeders can provide enough resistance that the booster or circuit breaker will not sense a short circuit.
Cab wiring
Walkaround ability is part of every DCC system. Handheld cabs need power and a way to communicate with the command station. Cabs are either tethered or wireless. Tethered cabs require plug-in connections placed in convenient
3 An inexpensive way to analyze DCC data is with Pricom’s DCC self contained Pocket Tester. This handheld unit analyzes DCC data directly from the rails and is powered by DCC.

he Alton & Sangamon Railroad was chartered in 1847 to build a railroad connecting the agricultural area centered on Springfield, Ill., with Alton, on the east bank of the Mississippi River 20 miles north of St. Louis. The railroad opened in 1851. During the ensuing decade it built a line north through Bloomington to Joliet and was renamed the St. Louis, Alton & Chicago Railroad. The Chicago & Alton Railroad was organized in 1861 to purchase the StLA&C. In 1864 the Chicago & Alton leased the Joliet & Chicago Railroad to gain access to Chicago. Timothy B. Blackstone, president of the Joliet & Chicago, became president of the C&A. In 1870 the C&A leased the Louisiana & Missouri River Railroad (Louisiana, Mo., to the north bank of the Missouri River opposite Jefferson City) and in 1878 it leased the Kansas City, St. Louis & Chicago Railroad (Mexico, Mo.-Kansas City), creating the shortest Chicago-Kansas City route. (In 1888 the Santa Fe completed a Chicago-Kansas City route that was 32 miles shorter.) By the end of the nineteenth century the Chicago & Alton had attracted the notice of Gould, Rockefeller, and Harriman, each of whom could find a place in his rail empire for the road. Harriman formed a syndicate of railroad financiers who were able to meet Blackstone’s terms (basically $175 per $100 share of common stock and $200 per share for preferred; Blackstone controlled one-third of the stock), and in 1899 the syndicate

T
Alton’s E7s were built in 1945, two years before the railroad was officially merged with the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio. Al Chione collection
purchased 95 percent of the stock. The Chicago & Alton then issued bonds, which the stockholders bought cheap and resold dear to the public, and the railroad used the proceeds of the bond sale to issue a 30 percent cash dividend on its stock. The Chicago & Alton Railway was incorporated April 2, 1900, to take over a line from Springfield to Peoria, and on the following day it leased the Chicago & Alton Railroad. The two companies were consolidated as the Chicago & Alton Railroad in 1906. In 1904 control passed to the Union Pacific and the Rock Island, and in 1907 to the Toledo, St. Louis & Western (the Clover Leaf, later part of the Nickel Plate). In 1912 the Chicago & Alton began a string of deficit years that continued almost unbroken to 1941. It lost much of
the coal traffic it had carried to Chicago, and the cattle trade from Kansas City disappeared (Blackstone had been one of the developers of the Chicago Union Stockyards). In 1922 the Chicago & Alton entered receivership. The Baltimore & Ohio, perhaps in an expansionist mood brought on by the Interstate Commerce Commission’s proposal to consolidate U.S. railroads into 19 systems, purchased the road at a foreclosure sale in 1929. B&O incorporated the Alton Railroad on January 7, 1931, and on July 18 of that year the Alton purchased the property of the Chicago & Alton Railroad. For 12 years the Alton was operated as part of the B&O, but on March 10, 1943, B&O restored its independence. Several midwestern railroads considered purchasing the Alton but declined; Gulf, Mobile & Ohio offered merger. In 1945 GM&O paid B&O approximately $1.2 million for all its claims against the Alton and all its Alton stock. The effective date of the merger was May 31, 1947.
he Ann Arbor began with two companies organized in 1869 and 1872 to build a railroad between Toledo, Ohio, and Ann Arbor, Mich. It took another 20 years and 12 companies, most named Toledo, Ann Arbor & something, for the railroad to reach the eastern shore of Lake Michigan at Frankfort, Mich. From Elberta, across a small inlet from Frankfort, the Ann Arbor operated car ferries to Kewaunee and Manitowoc, Wis., and Menominee and Manistique, Mich. The Ann Arbor Railroad was incorporated in 1895 as a reorganization of the Toledo, Ann Arbor & North Michigan Railroad. The Detroit, Toledo & Ironton obtained control of the Ann Arbor in 1905 but sold its interests in 1910. In 1911 the Ann Arbor purchased all the capital stock of the Manistique & Lake Superior Railroad, which extended north from Manistique, Mich., to connections with the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. In 1925 the Wabash acquired control of the Ann Arbor. By 1930 it held more than

97 percent of Ann Arbor’s stock. In 1963 Wabash sold the Ann Arbor to the DT&I (which was owned by the Wabash and the Pennsy). The M&LS and the connecting ferry route were abandoned in 1968. In 1970 the ICC authorized abandonment of the ferry to Menominee.
On Oct. 16, 1973, Ann Arbor declared bankruptcy. On April 1, 1976, Conrail took over its operation. The state of Michigan then purchased the railroad from the DT&I and arranged for its operation by Michigan Interstate Railway. The remaining car ferry lines from Frankfort to Manitowoc (79 miles) and Kewaunee (60 miles) ceased operation in April 1982. In 1983, operation of the former Ann Arbor was split among three railroads: Michigan Interstate, Tuscola & Saginaw Bay, and Michigan Northern. In 1984 T&SB took over MN’s portion of the Ann Arbor; the T&SB became the Great Lakes Central in 2006. A new Ann Arbor Railroad, an independent short line, was incorporated in 1988 to operate the line between Toledo and Ann Arbor; in 2013 this version of the AA was purchased by the Watco companies, a major operator of U.S. shortline railroads.

WARFARE 1

W
arfare in the Third World is often a low-budget operation
in short supply. In such asymmetrical conflicts, where
warring factions consist of irregular fighting forces, irregular equipment is de rigueur.
Fighters have been devising way to make weapons mobile since shortly after the invention of the wheel. Early armored cars were based on large civilian automobiles, such as Great Britain’s Rolls-Royce and Germany’s Stettin. During World War II, British and Commonwealth jeeps and Land Rovers rigged with machine guns fought in the North African desert (as seen in the 1960s television series “Rat Patrol”). In the 1980s, the war between Chad and Libya was called
To begin the heavy weathering, I took my trusty motor tool to the front bumper. It’s a Foredom, the kind that jewelers and dentists use, with a foot control and geared to go slow, unlike others that just tear things up. And I used a hairdryer to soften the resin to bend it severely. But I couldn’t mess it up to the point where I couldn’t attach it to the front end; the locators had to stay close enough for me to attach the part. So I made a mockup mount, then take a hairdryer to it and bent it up. I let it cool, popped it off, and glued it to the Land Cruiser. Also in the picture, I added tie rods, made from styrene rod, and brasswire valve stems for the tires.
4
I’ve added tread plate for the running board (a photoetched metal part from On the Mark). The license-plate mount is sheet styrene. I detailed the machine-gun mount using styrene rod with lead mounting strips and bolts from my Waldron punchand-die set.

The barrel is an aftermarket, 106mm barrel; I had to fit it to the kit. The .30-caliber machine gun is a resin casting; I detailed a plastic weapon and used it as a master for a mold. Shells and casings in the back are also my castings, but the jerry can rack is a Verlinden Productions resin piece; I added straps cut from thin lead sheet. Hinges for the doors are shaped from sheet styrene. I used brass rod and craft beads for the width indicators brass rod with craft beads. I robbed the hood latches from another kit.
In the back, you’ll see the same canisters as on the M38A1C Iranian jeep from the same castings. The real tubes are made of pressed cardboard; I bored out the castings to make them look like empty cylinders. I resin-cast the ammunition inside the tube too. The metal strips are .002” lead foil.
“The Toyota War” for the number of armed Toyota HiLux pickup trucks used. These sort of improvised fighting vehicles were termed technicals in Somalia during the 1990s. Unarmed United Nations and nongovernment organizations in Mogadishu found it prudent to hire local guards and drivers for protection, paying for them with “technical assistance grants.” Eventually, the vehicles secured by these grants became known simply as technicals.
My variation on this theme is a Toyota Land Cruiser armed with a Russian 107mm recoilless rifle. The vehicle is one that would have been fighting with Mohamed Farrah Aidid’s clan, the Habr Gidr. The Mig Productions 1/35 scale kit was actually modeled after a 1/24 scale Esci kit that came from my collection. It was a high-dollar kit, very rare, very expensive. My buddy Charlie Pritchett took it with him to Spain when he visited Mig Jimenez; Mig fell 57
