Third  Grade Required  Summer  Read Ramona  Quimby  Age  8 by  Beverly  Cleary

 Third  Grade required  activity  is “Shoebox  Diorama” •  Choose  a  shoebox  from  home.  Trace  the  bottom  of  the  shoebox  on a  plain  piece  of  paper.  Cut  out  the  shape.  Make  sure  it  fits  into  the  bottom  of  the shoebox. •  Choose  a  scene  from  the  book  or  a  particular  setting.  Draw  and  color  this scene  on  the  shoebox  cut  out,  and  glue  it  inside  the  bottom  of  the  shoebox. •  Choose  3  important  characters  from  the  book.  Draw,  color,  and  cut  out  the characters.  Attach  L-­shaped  strips  of  heavy  paper  to  the  back  of  each character.  Glue  each  character  to  a  side  of  the  box,  so  the  characters  are standing  upright. •  Choose  2-­3  other  props  from  the  book.  Draw,  color,  and  cut  them  out.  Then add  them  to  the  box  to  make  your  scene  look  realistic. •  Be  prepared  to  give  an  oral  summary  of  the  book. •  Be  familiar  with  the  characters,  setting,  problem,  and  solution  of  the  story. •  Bring  completed  shoebox  with  you  on  the  first  day  of  school.

Fifth  Grade Required  Summer  Read Great  Illustrated  Classics “The  Adventures  of  Robinson  Crusoe” by  Daniel  Defoe (adapted  youth  version)

Fifth  Grade required  activities (see  attached) It  is  required  that  students  read  Robinson  Crusoe  and  at  least two  books  from  the  following  list.  Record  the  titles  on  the attached  Elementary  Reading  Log.  Bring  everything  with  you on  the  first  day  of  school.

Required  Activities  for  Robinson  Crusoe: 1.    Crusoe  gives  us  a  detailed  description  of  his  home,  complete  with  the  cave and  fences  he  builds  for  protection.  Make  a  drawing  of  his  compound  based  on the  descriptions  in  the  novel.  Be  as  precise  as  possible.  Use  nothing  larger  than a  poster  board. 2.  On  Crusoe’s  tours  of  the  island,  both  by  land  and  by  foot,  he  gives  clear descriptions  of  what  he  sees.  Turn  these  descriptions  into  a  map,  looking  down at  the  island  from  a  bird’s  eye  view.  Be  prepared  to  discuss  why  maps  may  be similar  or  different  on  certain  features. 3.  Be  prepared  to  do  this  activity  in  class  the  first  week  of  school. With  a  partner  role-­play  the  first  “conversation”  Crusoe  and  Friday  have  once they  get  back  to  the  cave,  safely  away  from  Friday’s  captors.  Remember  that neither  one  can  speak  the  other’s  language  but,  according  to  Crusoe,  they  still manage  to  get  across  what  they  mean.  Use  pantomime  and  gestures  to communicate.  Practice  your  skit  privately  and  then  do  it  in  front  of  the  class. See  if  they  can  “translate”  what  you’re  trying  to  say!
