BOLOGNA G O L F T O U R 29th June - 9th July 2016 We have been traveling to Italy now for almost seven years and each time it is an absolute joy to do so. The culture, the people, the wine, the food and the golf, all elegance personified. A week is really not long enough to immerse ourselves in Italy; hence the tour this year is for ten nights and based on a two centre stay. We travel this year to the Bologna region, with five nights in Bologna itself and then five nights in Salsomaggiore, close to the charming city of Parma. We will play six rounds of golf, enjoy two fascinating half day tours, as well as a trip to the Ferrari museum on the day that we transfer from one hotel to the other. I hope that you can join me on what I am sure will be another fabulous tour to Italy. If you wish to book a place on the ‘Bologna Golf Tour’, please let us know and we will send you the confirmation details accordingly.

BOLOGNA G O L F T O U R Wednesday 29th June

Arriving in Bologna …and so we return to Italy! Always loved when we are here and always missed when we are not. Our 10-day tour of the Bologna region commences with a stay in the City itself and at the 4-star Hotel Commercianti. The hotel is an enchanting medieval building, placed in a unique location in the shadow of Basilica di San Petronio, a short stroll from the museums, theatres and shopping areas. The hotel, although recently renovated, retains the characteristics of the original building with breathtaking wooden beams, elegant bedrooms and suites, some of them with frescos, all elegantly furnished and equipped with every comfort, and unique and unforgettable views over the medieval town. We will be staying in a hotel that boasts many awards, two of which are closely linked with the medieval history of Bologna. The first is the Superintendence of cultural heritage, which recognised the palazzo as a protected historic building and the headquarters of the ancient City Hall in the XI century. The second is that the City Council of Bologna attested that the building was the home of the prestigious medieval guild of the Brentatori, back in 1250. Oh, it’s good to be back in Italy! Bologna Golf Club Our first round of golf is on one of the finest courses in the Emilia Romagna region. The Bologna golf course was designed by the dynamic duo of Cotton and Harris in 1959, with a few improvements being made by Peter Alliss in 2000. The course encapsulates the natural landscape beautifully, offering panoramic views across the Bologna countryside. The course has held numerous professional events and has played host to the Italian Amateur Championships many times as well. Good course management will be the key to our success on this challenging yet rewarding layout. Overnight – Hotel Commercianti, Bologna (4 Star)

Le Fonti Golf Club Today we head into the countryside and play the splendid Le Fonti Golf Club. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient ravines, this course is a great challenge. Don't let the picturesque setting fool us though, we will need the driver on more than one occasion. At over 7,000 yards off the whites, it's a real test for all handicappers, and with numerous elevated tees and clever approaches, each hole provides us with a different obstacle, which makes for a hugely entertaining round of golf. Bologna City Sightseeing

Molino del Pero Golf

During the morning we will take a take a tour of Bologna city centre, starting with the Piazza Maggiore, where we can admire the many medieval palaces’ facades and the Basilica of San Petronio. We will follow on with a visit to the Archiginnasio the old University building, decorated with about 6,000 coats of arms of students. Inside is the 17th century Anatomical Theatre, where dissections were held, enriched by statues of doctors and sculptures of anatomy. We will then walk through the picturesque alleys of the Mercato di Mezzo, the old market, and its fabulous food shops, until we reach the lovely Square of Santo Stefano, with the complex of Santo Stefano also called the “Jerusalem of Bologna” or “The Seven Churches”, a group of small Romanesque churches. And then onto piazza della Mercanzia, with the gothic Palazzo della Mercanzia and some 13th century buildings with wooden porticoes to view. Our visit ends at the foot of the Two Towers, the symbol of the city. The afternoon will be free for relaxation or perhaps some shopping.

We are back on the fairways today. Located on the aptly named “Via dei Mulini” (Mill Road), the Molino del Pero Golf Club was developed around the reconstruction of one of the 28 nineteenth-century mills scattered along the Savena River, many of which can still be seen along its banks. Nestled in the Apennine foothills just south of Bologna, the Molino del Pero Golf Club is designed to satisfy any type of golfer, from the most demanding expert to the casual player. Arturo Filippini, the President of the Club, is a great golfing enthusiast. He chose this particular plot of land to be transformed into a golf course because it was here that he played as a child. It was his dream to see this sport, his lifelong passion, practiced on these grounds to which he feels so intrinsically linked. The first 9 holes were designed in 1991 by Count Ignazio De Vito Piscicelli and the back 9 were added in 2006. The owners and management make a point of ensuring that the Club presents a relaxed and cordial atmosphere to all who come to play.

Transfer to Salsomaggiore Terme We depart Bologna and move on to our second destination, Salsomaggiore. We will be transferred to the Hotel Casa Romagnosi, which is located 32km from Parma and 40km from Piacenza. The hotel is located in the centre of Salsomaggiore Terme, in front of the beautiful Berzieri Spa and Wellness Centre's Art Nouveau building, and just a short walk from the Zoja Spa. The Hotel Casa Romagnosi is a 4 star hotel distinguished by its elegance and the services it offers. The location of Salsomaggiore allows us to experience the beautiful provinces of Parma and Piacenza, characterised by the delicious food and wines of the regions and the evocative atmosphere of the medieval Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. In the afternoon, we shall visit the Ferrari Museum. “Live the dream” is the claim that welcomes visitors, promising an immersive and unique experience. The Museo Ferrari in Maranello focuses on Ferrari’s present and future, whilst remaining deeply rooted in the Prancing Horse’s extraordinary history. A permanent exhibition dedicated to Formula 1 and the World Championship, complete with cars and a ‘pit stop wall’ where visitors can gain an understanding of telemetry and pilots’ in-race driving behavior. There are many other visitor amenities as well, such as a cinema with looped showings of themed films, semi-professional Formula 1 simulators, a photographic set to allow us to take home a personalised photo souvenir in a Ferrari, an opportunity to try our hands at a genuine tyre change, a large Ferrari Store and a warm, welcoming café. Salsomaggiore Terme Golf & Country Club Situated amongst the rolling hills of Salsomaggiore and immersed in a natural paradise of 70 hectares, the Salsomaggiore Golf Club is a wonderful country golfing retreat. The course runs in a silent valley, amazing us both for the technique needed to play the course and for the beauty of the landscape. Undulating fairways and fast greens provide excellent playability albeit with some technical passages of play. Our round will be accompanied by the beauty of natural scenery and the wonderful smell of the fruit trees, which give sweetness in all seasons. Overnight – The Hotel Casa Romagnosi (4 Star)

Wednesday 6th July

Castell’Arquato Golf Club Today we head to Castell’Arquato Golf Club. Inaugurated in 1991, the Club stands at the point where the lush valleys around Piacenza meet the rolling hillsides of Parma. The course is set in 64 hectares of countryside and is 220 metres above sea level. The course is set in a green and meandering valley and was designed by Cotton & Pennick. The course is fairly demanding, but wonderful to play. Overnight – The Hotel Casa Romagnosi (4 Star)

Exploring Parma Today is a sightseeing day and a classically Italian one at that. We will visit the beautiful medieval City of Parma. We will start with the Cathedral and the Baptistery, which are among the most representative examples of Romanesque and Gothic art in Northern Italy. The Cathedral and the nearby church of S. Giovanni also offer breathtaking domes painted by Correggio, whose illusionism inspired the Baroque painting. We will then take a stroll through the elegant city streets until we reach the Teatro Regio, giving us the opportunity to illustrate the great musical tradition of these lands and its leading figures, Verdi and Toscanini. Finally, we will visit the Teatro Farnese, a stunning wooden theatre inside the Palazzo della Pilotta, built under the patronage of the Farnese family. We will then be given some time to ourselves for shopping or further sightseeing, before being transferred back to the hotel in the late afternoon. Overnight – The Hotel Casa Romagnosi (4 Star)

Friday 8th July

La Rocca Golf We bring the golf programme to an end with a round at the super La Rocca Golf Club. Established in 1985, La Rocca Golf Club sits on the hills that dominate Parma’s plain, close to the ducal village of Sala Baganza. This is a technical and moderately difficult course set amidst oak and

acacia woods and artificial lakes. In the surrounding area, in addition to Parma’s monuments and museums that are only 13 km away, there are a number of interesting places such as Torrechiara Castle, Fontanellato, Colorno, Soragna and Canossa fortresses. The neighbouring Boschi di Carrega Regional Park boasts a huge variety of flora and fauna in 1,000 hectares of woods and glades. Indeed, there is golf, art, history, ecology and excellent Parmesan cuisine in the ancient ‘Casinetto’, which is now the club restaurant. In the evening, we will be taken to a local restaurant for a farewell dinner, bringing to an end what I am sure will be another quite magical trip to Italy.
