NO SCHOOL.

March will bring our School Literacy Committee's Read-in for all staff and students. It will also mark our Quarter 3 Pep Assembly to recognize athletics, academic goals, and positive behaviors. Teachers have been setting literacy and math goals with students and there has been a great deal of progress along with student buy-in. In addition, the PTO is planning a "Color Run" health and fundraiser experience. See the information on the bottom of this newsletter! As we round out Quarter 3, I would like to ask you to consider an idea or two from this list of ways to support your child's learning and any struggles they may experience in school. All of this will help support their success this year and beyond.  Prompt your child to face challenges positively and encourage them to stick with it. Add the word “yet” to end of statements made from frustration, such as “I don’t understand this…yet!”  Provide time and space for your child to read independently. This time should be free from distractions such as television. Place computers in common rooms. Turn off and turn in electronics when students go to bed.  Avoid statements like “I wasn’t good at math” or “Writing is really hard.”  Appreciate the journey. Celebrate small and big progress. Praise your child when he or she makes an effort, and share in the excitement when he or she solves a problem or understands something for the first time.  One of the most valuable factors in how well a child can read is whether or not parents and family members model reading at home.  Make time for conversation at home. Discuss current events, shared interests, and future aspirations for education and career.  Encourage curiosity. Visit museums, zoos, theaters, historical sites, aquariums, and other educational places to help increase your child’s exposure to new knowledge and vocabulary. Learning can happen every where and is more fun when it occurs in many places! Finally, a reminder that Bay Lane (and all students around Wisconsin) will be taking a new state assessment. It is called Wisconsin Forward exam. All grades at Bay Lane will be tested. The Bay Lane window has been slotted for the week of April 11. More details will be shared by each grade level team, once the schedule is complete. Grades 58 will take Math and Literacy. Grade 8 will also take Social Studies and Science.

Thank you and happy spring! Mrs. Zandt

Bay Lane PTO– Splash of Color Run/Walk ~ April 28, 2016 The Bay Lane PTO is thrilled to announce our exciting new fundraiser! We will be hosting a “Splash of Color” Run after school on Thursday April 28th. The entire student body will be invited to stay after school and participate. We will be promoting the good health of our students while raising money for our school by asking family and friends to sponsor us with donations and there will be nothing to sell, pick up, store, or deliver. Watch for the information packet to come home with students in mid March. We have enlisted the help of a fundraising company to help us make our event a success and each participant will have their own webpage to help them solicit donations. We will be selling banner ads which will appear on our event website as well as each student's donation website. These ads will reach thousands of potential customers for local businesses. If you know of someone who may be interested in purchasing a banner ad, please have them contact Sharon Hopp at [email protected]

Student Council Bay Lane Student Council held the first ever Bay Lane T-Shirt design contest at the end of January. The students were challenged to design a shirt around the theme of "Respectful, Responsible, Community". With the help of Mr. Leiteritz's Adobe Photoshop class and promotion by Bay Lane Staff, over 60 students submitted designs to the inaugural event. Ultimately Cole Mercer, a 7th Grader, was voted top design! Cole won a free t-shirt and movie gift card for his outstanding efforts. All Bay Lane students have the opportunity to order the new Bay Lane shirts. Orders are now being taken for the new t-shirts at the low cost of only $10! All orders are due to student's homeroom teachers by March 11th. We can't wait to see everyone wearing Cole's design around school! Thank you to everyone that made this event a success.

Lost & Found The lost and found is located under the video screen in the commons area. Throughout the Winter months many coats, hats and sweatshirts are put into the lost and found. Students should make sure that they check the lost and found if they are missing items. At the end of each month, all items are donated. In addition, a reminder to students to take their lunch bags home with them on a daily basis. For sanitary purposes, lunch bags will be disposed of on each Friday. If your child leaves a lunch bag, it can also be found in the lost and found section.

Alternate Bus Route Home If a student is planning to ride an alternate bus home from school on a specific day, the student needs to bring in a signed note from home with permission . This note should be dropped off in the bus note bin. This bin is located at the main entrance, and is set on the front table. This note will be approved and recorded for safety precautions and a pass is issued and returned in the bin once approved and recorded. The student should pick this approved pass up after/during lunch time. This pass is required for the bus driver at dismissal. Please remind your student, if they do not have approval, they will not be allowed to ride home on another bus. Phone calls home during the day will not be allowed. A parent note is required. In addition, there is a very limited amount of time when boarding buses, therefore phone calls can not be made at that time.
