Mr . Hal Wright Department 766 2 North American Aviation, Inc . Santa Susana Facility Chatsworth, Californi a

Re : NAA Purchase Order R65tiD-90328 h Dear Mr . Wright :

Attached hereto are the water analyses for Well #6 and Well 47 . The quantitative chemical analysis shows these two well waters to be similar in character to the waters of Well #5 and sell #ILA . _You will note that el l _ = 7 has 0 . 6 p,-,m of iron similar to Well =LA which gives a reddish precipitate on aeration and standing . The pH of both waters is relatively low, although still on the alkaline side .

The sample taken at the SRE pond does not show any unusual concentrations . The rather high sodium shown in the spectrographic analysis could be accounted for by NaC1 used for softener regeneration . Since this sample was taken right after a rain it may not be indicative of actual ponded water conditions . A minimum check on the sample from the closed system SRE heat exchanger showed pH 9 .5, Hardness 11< .0 ppm as CaCO3, and Fe 5O ppm . This high iron shows that serious corrosion is occurring in this system and confirms visual observations .

Very truly yours , Y & WFSTCOTT

Attention :

Mr. Marvin J. Eudrotf

Gentlemen :

Seven copies of our "Report of Foundation Investigation , Proposed Delta Rocket Test Stands and Appurtenant Structures , Rocket Engine Field Laboratory , Santa Susana , California , for North American Aviation, Inc ." are herewith submitted .

The scope of the investigation was planned

in collaboration with lb . Hans W . Meier of your firm . Sandstone bedrock underlies the site and either is exposed at the ground surface or is encountered at shallow depths . All of the structures, with the exception of those subject to large uplift loads, may be supported upon spread foundations . Drilled cast - in-place concrete piles are recommended for support of structures subject to large uplift loads . Yours very truly ,

The site was explored by drilling 12 holes ranging in depths from 20 to 75 feet, utilizing diamond drilling equipment .

Continuous cores of

the sandstone formation were taken with an I IX core barrel .

Rock and over-

burden soil were examined by our engineer on the site . A Log of Borings is presented on Plates A-1 to A-4 . The percentage of recovery obtained during rock coring is noted on the left of the Log of Borings .

The soil samples and rock cores were examined in the field and in laboratory .

Since the soil and rock are similar to that encountered at

the Bravo and Coca areas , and the rock is somewhat more sound, no additional teats were performed .

3UOJTCT Analysis of Reclamation :"a er from Bowl Area

Reference : Research Name 172/9_", "An l.ysis of Rcclanatior. 1•'ater from Bowl Area," dated 28 Jung 1957 .

As previously reported, t .r•e bowl area at Santa Sussna is neing water from the storal a pond located in tic lower test stand arcs . This water is used for a two-fold purpose, i . c, for .ooliri . flare buckets durinC firinJ. s and for test stand fire extinCuuishers . The excessive amount of impurities present in the water render it undesir-~,le for fire. extini, uicher use . A water sample was subrLitted by the Utiliti^s Group cf I-du:.trial Erv.;ineeri.nC for analysis and reco mended treatment . Comparing the results of this latest analysis with previous ones, (see Table I), a 25 to 50 porc- :` in^rease of suspended solids and conductivity is observed . The total hardn"ss and pH have remained unchtenCed . Analysis for hydro,;en sulfide Cas revealed a five : opm concentration, which is considered excessive and highly corrosive . Removal of suspended solids was accomplished in the following manner : two cylinders, both containing; approximately three and one -half fluid ounces of bowl area water, were prepared and one-third of an ounce of filter alum (aluminum sulfate) was added to one . After six hours of standing , the particles in the cylinder containinC filter alum settled to the bottom. An additional 20 hours were required for the water in the untreated cylinder to reach the same transparency as the treated one . The water treatment recorunended in Research Memo 172/93 is considered adeetvtte to remove both dissolved gas3s (e . , hydro[,, rt sulfide ) and suspended solids . If the water r. ''quirenents ar-1 such &at the settling time by natural meano must be reduced . ;h :n a baffled floculating tank with a filter alum chemical feed pump should proceed the settling basin (page 3, RM 172/93) 0 'Fable I .
