Bloomington Theatre and Art Center 2012-2013 Report Dear Friends and Supporters: BTAC exists to enrich the cultural fabric of the communities we serve by providing high quality performing arts, visual arts, and arts education programs, and welcoming and nurturing talent. In fiscal year 2013, we made significant progress toward realizing each of the three elements that comprise this mission. Providing high quality performing arts, visual arts, and art education programs Delivering high quality for artists and audiences requires that we focus on both the “what” and the “so what” of our programming. The “what” concerns tangible, technical matters: the design and construction of our sets and costumes; our commitment to playing the complete scores of musicals with full instrumentation; the talent and credentials of our directors, choreographers, designers, musicians, and exhibiting and teaching artists; the way we pair artists for exhibitions; the installation and lighting of those exhibitions; the variety and depth of our arts education curriculum; etc. The “so what” has to do with the impact of our programming on the people we serve. How does a theater patron or a gallery visitor or a student change, grow, learn, or feel as a result of what she experiences on the stage or in the galleries or the art studios? ˃˃˃

Looking back over the past year, we are pleased with how well we attended to the “what” and the “so what” of our work. In performing arts, we continued raising the bar on production values in the Black Box Theater. And a number of talented actors who had never worked with us before joined seasoned Bloomington Civic Theatre alumni to great effect in shows like A Few Good Men and Moonlight and Magnolias. The result: the reputation of our Black Box productions has continued to grow. From 2011-2012 to 2012-2013, Black Box season ticket sales jumped 98%. We’re also very proud of our work on the Schneider Theater stage. More than anything else, we will remember 2012-2013 as the season when we were at last invited to compete for the annual Ivey Awards—recognizing the best in Twin Cities’ professional theater. In the galleries, the most notable shows from 2013 included the National Watercolor Society Traveling Exhibition, which brought to our region knockout watercolor paintings from around the United States, and at the other end of the aesthetic continuum, Out of the Abyss: William Murray and the Prison Art Project. By showing extraordinary pieces made by inmates alongside a new body of deeply provocative work by Bill Murray, Out of the Abyss gave audiences a window into the souls of men incarcerated at Stillwater Prison and the art teacher who reconnected them with their humanity. We select our performing arts seasons and annual exhibition calendars being very mindful of the aesthetic continuum mentioned above and our commitment to educate and inspire as well as entertain. In fiscal year 2013, we made investments in audience development resources to help theater patrons and gallery visitors have the best possible experiences with all of our programming. For example, we published an audience guide for our production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, and many people reported that it helped them better appreciate this masterpiece of contemporary musical theater. For Out of the Abyss, we used educational and experiential elements in new ways to encourage visitors to examine their perspectives on incarceration. Specifically, we created a prison cell made from gallery walls that invited visitors to contemplate what life would be like if confined to 85 square feet. And we brought everyone from the Bloomington Noon Rotary Club to Kennedy High School art students into the gallery for special artist talks with Bill Murray. One of the Kennedy teachers told us that in 17 years of leading field trips, none had been more powerful. Serving increasingly diverse communities Our mission refers to enriching the cultural fabric of “the communities we serve.” As the Twin Cities in general and the South Metro in particular become increasingly diverse, we have a responsibility to ensure that our programs are accessible to all people regardless of their age, income, racial and ethnic backgrounds; and physical, mental, and emotional capacities.

We made substantial progress in this regard in fiscal year 2013. New initiatives included expanding our free afterschool arts workshops to four Bloomington elementary schools, and we plan to increase to eight schools in 2014. Through a new partnership with Bloomington’s Hillcrest Community School, we hosted nearly all of the fifth grade students and their parents and teachers at a performance of 42nd Street for free—and we provided in-school workshops before and after the performance with music director Anita Ruth and a member of the cast. Many of these students had never seen a professional theater performance. In recognition of all of our efforts to bring the arts to school children here in our hometown, BTAC was officially designated as a “Friend of the Bloomington Public Schools” by the school board in January. Our outreach work has started to take us beyond the boundaries of Bloomington as well. Over the past year, we developed new relationships with the Hennepin County Libraries, several organizations serving adults with disabilities, and other prospective program partners. These partnerships have allowed us to begin providing arts workshops to people of all ages from across our region, and we expect this geographic expansion to continue. Welcoming and nurturing talent When we talk about “welcoming and nurturing talent,” we mean serving artists just as we serve the audiences who come to our performances, visit our exhibitions, and participate in arts learning. In the past year, we served as a resource for artists seeking to strengthen their portfolio presentation and secure a gallery exhibition. We introduced talented performing artists to directors and choreographers who can help them refine their craft and find roles in other productions elsewhere in the Twin Cities. And we provided opportunities for artists to demonstrate competence in new areas, including curatorial work. Much of the value we provided to artists came about through one-to-one coaching and in other informal ways, but we also provided classes focused on “business of art” skills and the development of advanced technical skills. In the art studios, for example, we were pleased to welcome a number of master teaching artists from around the country including Carrie Burns Brown from South Carolina, Judi Betts from Louisiana, and Cheng Khee-Chee from Duluth. Just as we were putting the final touches on one of our most successful programmatic years, we learned that BTAC was awarded a $100,000 matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to launch an exciting new initiative called “Terra Nova” that we are leading with the City of Bloomington. This project aims to put artists at the center of community and economic development in Bloomington’s South Loop. During the two-year project period, we will develop a plan for the long-term integration of public art in that area and commission four to six public art projects designed to demonstrate the impact of art on community vitality. Bloomington Theatre and Art Center is growing in such exciting ways, and we are honored to have the trust and confidence of the many friends and supporters who make our work possible. Whatever role you play in our organization, thank you!

BLOOMINGTON THEATRE AND ART CENTER 1800 W Old Shakopee Road Bloomington, MN 55431 btacmn.org
