Creating Blog Content By far one of the most important aspect of your blog is the content. Whatever niche that you have, you need to have a lot of valuable content to draw your audience to your blog and to answer your calls to action. There are some tried and true ways that you can develop and create awesome content that your audience will not only consume, but share with their friends.

1. Use Google Autocomplete When you’re stumped for an idea of what to blog about, go to Google Search. Type in the subject matter and pay attention to the Google Autocomplete tries. These are things that other people have searched for with that word in it. That gives you a good clue that it’s likely a good thing to write about, or create other types of content about such as videos, or infographics.  15 Minute Task: Make a list of at least 100 keywords that you can use, and then each day you can probably come up with at least four or five blog post ideas simply by using Google Search Autocomplete.

2. Read Industry News The more you know about your topic, the more information you’ll have at your fingertips to blog about. Keeping abreast of news by reading other blogs, books, magazines and more will give you that knowledge to help you stay ahead of the pack. Your audience depends on you to be the expert and the only way you can be the expert is if you keep reading and learning.  Quick & Easy Tip: As you read, always take notes. You will not remember what you’ve read. A good practice is to use old fashioned 3x5 cards or you can use software like Evernote to keep track of the ideas that you develop as you read.

3. Repurpose Older Content 6 of 37 - Brought To You By Blogelina.com

Take inventory of all your older content. Update anything that is out of date and maybe even wrong now due to new information or technology. Then, you can take those blog posts and put them into a new format. For example, if you had an article with five points, each point can now become a video blog for YouTube.  15 Minute Task: Weekly, starting with the oldest blog post (keep notes of where you stopped last) read them, and bring them current, as needed, based on the current situation and facts. Then as you do so, think of how you can repurpose. Is a blog post data centric? That’s perfect for an infographic design. You can use Piktochart.com to create awesome interactive infographics. Content is arguably the most important part of your blog. Spend time putting content on your blog, and then redirecting people to you blog instead of spreading content around all over the place. Your blog should be considered the hub of your online existence.

4. Tease Them Use your Facebook page to tease your audience about your new blogging content. Provide an interesting blurb, such as a quote from the new blog post or video and then invite them to read more to find out more. Don’t provide the entire post directly on Facebook, make them click through.  Quick & Easy Tip: Need help writing your next blog post? You can even tease your readers while you’re writing the post. For example, ask questions about the topic to get input so you can make your blog post even better.

5. Add a Good Picture Not only should you have a good profile picture and cover picture, but every time you make a post include an engaging and relevant image with it. The image will draw attention to the post, and will even encourage sharing.  Resource Tip: Use software like Canva.com to help you make quick and easy images that are appropriate for Facebook. Remember if you plan to promote the post, the image cannot have too many words and must be mostly an image.

6. Make it Into a Graphic If you have a good blog post that has a lot of data in it, you can share a blurb to the post, but also put the data into a graphic to post with the Facebook post. Graphics are easy to make 9 of 37 - Brought To You By Blogelina.com

using Canva.com, or Pixlr.com and even Gimp.org which is free professional grade image editing software.  15 Minute Task: Go to Canva.com and make a free graphic with one quote from the blog post you’re sharing. Make sure it’s something that resonates so that they want to click through and read more. With so many people using Facebook every single day, it’s important that you put it to good use. Facebook makes it easy to target the right people, build up a community, and make the most of all your content.

Twitter Simplified Another supremely important social media network that will help you promote your blog and even help you figure out what to blog about. Twitter has a world of good information and due to the fact that it’s searchable you can use it for research too.

7. Use Video Twitter video is easy to use. You can make a recording specifically for Twitter with your Smartphone, or you can upload another video that you created for something else with your iPhone. The trick is that the video needs to stay at 30 seconds or less. You can link to the rest of the video if you have a longer video to link to.  Quick & Easy Tip: A really good tactic is to respond to direct Tweets with a video. You can record videos for Twitter directly with your Smartphone giving them an answer to a question. It’s a great way to drum up excitement.

8. Use it For Research A really great use for Twitter is research. With over 400 million Tweets a day, there is a wealth of information to find if you know how. In order to conduct research on Twitter just sign into your Twitter account. There is even a Twitter Directory for Higher Education which allows you to search for Hashtags or add them to a special academic directory. So, if it’s good enough for academia it’s good enough for you. You can use Twitter Lists to help you aggregate specific information that you can read when you want to. If you know what a specific hashtag is you can also use that in your search. But, even if you don’t know you can simply type your keyword into the search bar. Remember, there are no spaces used in hashtags. So a two word search should be smashed together as one word.

9. Set Up a Hashtag 12 of 37 - Brought To You By Blogelina.com

To create a hashtag it’s important to understand why you want the hashtag, make sure it’s not used by someone else, and then to use it regularly and ask others to use it too. Plus call out people who are using it so that they know you’re watching. To create a hashtag you want to keep it short, remember that a Tweet can only be 140 characters and a hashtag that is too long will not be used by people. Secondly you can ensure it’s not being used by going to hashtags.org to make sure it’s not been used. Of course, you can still use them, but this is a good way to get the rights to a hashtag. Use the hashtag that you create in blog posts, and on Tweets and ask other people to do it too. That way you can search your hashtag to find out how far the information has gone.  15 Minute Task: Use the last two Twitter tips to create a hashtag for at least one of your blog's topics. Start using it whenever you write about that topic! Twitter breaks news before cable or network news. Because of this simple fact it’s imperative that you learn all you an about it and use it to help promote your blog to your audience.

Pinterest Simplified One of the most important social networks of our time, Pinterest is another image centric social media network. You can use Pinterest to find topics to post about, as well as create pin boards to attract people to your blog. Even if you have to think outside the box a little, because your topic is less image-centric, it’s possible to use Pinterest to drive traffic to your blog using Pinterest. Note: Don’t forget to verify that your blog’s URL for Pinterest is accurate.

10.

Create Infographics

Pinterest is the perfect place to put infographics that you can make from any data centric blog posts that you have. Then you can link directly to the blog post so that the audience can see the explanation for all the data in the graphic.  15 Minute Task: First, choose an old blog post that has a lot of statistics or data in it. Then go to Piktochart.com and choose a template in which to add the data. Then post it with a link back to the original blog post. You can also add the image to your blog post to beef it up. Don’t forget to add a “pin” button to each of your blog posts. Vertical photos work much better on Pinterest, so that’s why infographics work so well.

11.

Make Category Pin Boards

On Pinterest you can create different Pin Boards. Use your blog categories to create a different pin board for each category. You need five to ten Pin Boards to make your Pinterest account look active and to get people interested so this is a perfect way to separate out the different boards you want. Post an image depiction of each of your blog posts to each category, linking back to the blog post. Remember, when someone pins it or shares it, and someone looks at it, it will always take them back to your original post.

15 of 37 - Brought To You By Blogelina.com

Also ensure that you are using Rich Pins. This ensures that your blog name and your name are added to pins when they are shared. But, don’t forget to watermark all your images. You can use an app like iWatermark or Visual Watermark.

12.

Get Topic Ideas

Like with Twitter, Pinterest can be an excellent way to find important topic ideas within your niche to create content about. If you regularly post your blogs to Pinterest, it’s likely once you get enough content and followers you’ll also get comments and questions. That will be an important way that you get content ideas. You can find out what people are pinning from your blog, plus you can find people who work within the same niche as you and find out what people are pinning from their blog. This information will help you know what type of posts are more likely to get pinned and can give you good ideas for content.  Quick & Easy Tip: To find out what posts are being pinned from your domain just type this into a browser: http://pinterest.com/source/yourdomain.com and you can do this with any website which will enable you to search your competition’s results as well. This can be very useful information for you to use when creating blogging content. Pinterest isn’t always a slam dunk. It really does depend on your audience, whether they’re there or not, and whether your niche can be translated into information that is easily viewable and understandable on Pinterest. If you can find an interesting out of the box way to share your niche on Pinterest, and lead more people back to your audience then you should do it.

Instagram Simplified When you use any social network the goal is to bring them to your blog. To get started put your blog URL in your Instagram profile. Do make sure that your blog is useable on mobile devices first, otherwise they’ll be disappointed when they click through. Also, while users cannot click on links in comments you can still put a URL as a watermark and in a comment so that users can copy and paste it into a browser window to visit your blog directly. You might even want to tell them “copy and paste this URL to find out how to make this delicious recipe”.

13.

Ask for Questions

One great idea for Instagram is to pose a question on Instagram using a graphic. Ask them to answer a specific question in comments. Then you can use the questions as topics to new blog posts. Once you create the blog post, go in and respond to the question with the link to the answer. It’s also nice to call out the questioner and tell people in your answer what their Instagram name is so that you can share the wealth with them. They’ll appreciate it and be more likely to supply questions in the future.  Quick & Easy Tip: On Instagram you can also use hashtags on posts.

14.

Post Day in the Life Pics

It’s nice to have content on Instagram that is different from what is on your blog. This keeps the Instagram audience interested, attracts new audiences, and if your other social network or blogging audience joins you on Instagram they won’t be bored. A great idea is to post “day in the life” information.  15 Minute Task: For example, let’s say you’re a food blogger and you made a mistake, go ahead and post that mistake to Instagram. People will love you for it. Say you’re a freelancer; you could post a picture of you working with your feet up in your easy chair or a picture of the beach from your balcony.

18 of 37 - Brought To You By Blogelina.com

There are numerous ideas that can work with this. Use humor too. Say you are trying to work but your two year old is crying, take a picture, add a caption “so much for work” or “so glad I have a flexible schedule” and it’ll be an instant sharable hit.

15.

Send Them to Your Blog

The whole point of Instagram, like other social media accounts is to get more traffic to your blog. These channels are good to use for promoting your content. Content will not be consumed if people don’t know about it. If you know for a fact that you have an audience that likes using Instagram then you need to be there.  Quick & Easy Tip: Put your URL in your profile, watermark your images, and mention your URL in your comments. That will help draw traffic but what will work even more is creating wonderful, engaging, and interesting images that tell a story of their own. Instagram is extremely popular. There are people who became stars on Instagram before they even started blogging. Find a good way to share the information that makes people want to come back to your blog again and again.

Blog Maintenance Simplified It’s very important that you keep your blog up to date and functioning. Broken links, and old design or a poorly working platform can all turn people away from wanting to be part of your viewership if you’re not careful. The best content just won’t be looked at if the site loads slowly, it can’t be read on a mobile device, or the colors burn people’s retinas.

16.

Check for Broken Links

Not much is worse than sending your audience to a blog and for them to be taken to a broken link. What a disappointment. Have you ever watched a show like Shark Tank, saw an item you liked, tried to find their website only to see that it’s either crashed or the links don’t work? When broken links happen a lost opportunity will occur all the way around for them and you. No one likes that.  Resource Tip: You can avoid this problem by checking often for broken links. You can use a free service like Dead Link Checker, or if you use WordPress you can use a plugin like Broken Link Checker. But, you can also optimize your 404 pages. A 404 page is a page that your audience is taken to when the link is broken. Use a WordPress plugin to help you with WordPress 404 page customizations. If you use another type of site, ask how you customize the 404 error page before you mess anything up, but usually it’s just a matter of finding the page, then adding your customizations to it.

17.

Test Everything

Like broken links, and error pages, it’s important to be very aware of how your blog site is working. How fast does it load? Do the links work? Is the navigation good enough to send your audience where you want them to go? Is the popup too disruptive? It’s important to test everything you do and every change you make.

While not everyone is a grammar guru, it’s important to double check spelling, typos and other errors. You never know when your 9th grade English teacher will read your blog. It’s okay to use language that isn’t technically grammatically correct as long as it makes sense and represents your voice.  15 Minute Task: If you have forms on your website, make sure that they really work. Not only that double check that they flow well, and have good instructions. Fill out the form and make sure it goes where you think it should and that it gives the right thank you page.

18.

Keep it Updated

The worst thing you can do for your blog is to not keep it updated. If you are having issues getting enough blog posts up, date the date off the code so that first time visitors don’t realize it’s been a long time since you posted a blog. But, mostly you want to keep it up dated with valuable content because your audience will come to expect it and look forward to it.  Resource Tip: Check your SEO for each post. You can use a plugin like WordPress SEO by Yoast, which helps lead you through proper SEO on each page you create. Even if you have no idea what you’re doing the software helps you. Make sure you’ve updated to a mobile friendly website. It’s easy to do if you use WordPress, just make sure the theme is responsive. But remember, just because it says it’s responsive doesn’t mean it’s ideal. Double check what your site looks like on other devices using Mobile Test Me.

The more modern your website is and the better it looks, the more people will want to read your blog. The fewer mistakes there are on your blog, the faster it loads, the more everything works the more repeat visitors you’ll get and the more they’ll trust your recommendations.  Resource Tip: If it's in your budget, consider hiring someone to manage your blog maintenance for you. This can free up your time to focus more on growing your blog - rather than just trying to keep it running.

Email Management Simplified Part of your success as a blogger depends on getting people to sign up for your targeted email marketing lists. An email list, as you may know, is really where the money is. 19.

Set up Email Series

Using software like Aweber.com, set up an automated email marketing series that sends information to your audience once they sign up for the information on your blog. You can use it to market tools, information products and to simply update them on what’s going on if you want.  Quick & Easy Tip: Every post needs to have a reason and every post should have an amazing call to action in order for it to produce results. An email series should be directly related to whatever your audience member signed up for. It should be very targeted and personalized.

20.

Announce New Posts

A great use of an email list is to send out a blog post announcement. Don’t just send it out without a blurb and some other news, but reminding your audience to come back to your blog based on the new blog post is a great reason to send out a message to everyone. Include other information in the post and tie in the new post to the email message. That way it’s interesting enough to open and gives you a chance to promote something else.  Quick & Easy Tip: Remember that one thing that gets people to open your email is whether or not they liked the last email you sent them. Make them relevant, make them personal, and always make them lead back to your blog.

21.

Collect Email Addresses

Before you can send email series or blog updates you’ll need to collect email addresses. There are a few ways in which you can do this. Give away something of value; put some of your content behind a wall, push out a pop up or slider that asks for an email address. Host a webinar or do other things that get your audience’s attention that enable you to collect their email address.  30 Minute Task: Think of a resource you could provide to your readers that they would really like to have. Something that would make life easier for them. Create a lead magnet that is something your audience really wants to help them solve a problem. A good way to market your lead magnet is to use Leadpages.net to help you set up the landing page for it. Another way to collect email addresses is to put some of your content behind a “pay” wall. The fee is an email address. This can be done with software such as Pay Per View or Pay With a Like. The important thing when building your email list is to find a way that is not intrusive and makes your audience excited to give you their information. Once you get their information, use it wisely.

Marketing Simplified When you have a blog, the only way it’s going to become popular is for you to market it. There is a saying among marketers it is simple: Always be marketing. When you produce new content, whether it’s free or paid, spend just as much time on promotion as you did creating it. That’s how you’ll get more readers, and more readers actually bread more readers. Eventually, with enough work, there will be a snowball effect. Your traffic will just keep getting bigger and bigger and it will come to a point where it feels effortless.

22.

Set up Share Buttons

If you don’t have share buttons on your blog, and under each post, as well as a call to action to share, then you’re missing out on a bigger audience. You can even incentivize sharing by blocking some of your content behind a wall that requires you to “like”, “share”, “Tweet”, “Pin” or even email the content to a friend of theirs will be an encouragement for your audience to get the word out about your information.  Resource Tip: Add Share buttons to your Wordpress blog posts with the Shareaholic plugin.

23.

Include Calls to Action

A call to action is simply verbiage that asks your audience to make a choice and to take an action. The best calls to action are relevant, timely, and limited. You don’t want your audience to have too many choices because there is a specific action you want them to take. Be clear about that action. Tell them why they should take it. Focus on the benefits of action, as well as the way in which you will solve their problems. Make them an offer they can’t refuse, and then make it easy for them to act. 15 Minute Task: Look at your last two blog posts. If you don't have a call to action at the bottom of them, add one! Whether it's asking for a comment, for an answer to a question, or for a share or tweet, each post should have a clear call to action.

Remarket

One of the most exciting things about technology today is the ability to remarket to people. Remarketing works by installing a cookie on your website that downloads onto your visitors’ computer. When you set up remarketing using either Google Ads or Facebook Ads (just follow their instructions) then when they leave your website and go about their business looking at other things, your offer will keep showing up in the ad area of websites and social media sites that your visitor looks at. Marketing is something that is important for everyone with any type of business to do. If you don’t market you won’t be found. You have to be found to become a sought after blogger and expert in your field.

Then you would do what you need to do in order to make it work.

When you first set up your blog you’ll need to set a budget. If you’ve already got going and not thought about budget that’s okay, think of it now. 26.

Promote Something

If you don’t promote something there won’t be any finances to worry about. Even if it makes you uncomfortable, promotion is something that you have to wrap your mind around in order to be able to blog and turn it into a living. Promotion is not a dirty word. The truth is, anyone can become a blogger, but only a few people will actually turn it into something tangible. First, you have to get readers. Finding readers requires promotion. In order to continue keeping up the blog, you’ll need to be able to pay expenses. Hosting gets more expensive when your blog is busy, answering questions of your readers starts getting time consuming, and processing emails becomes a drudge. In order to manage everything you have to bring in some money. To earn money you’re going to have to either create a product or a service, or you’ll need to promote someone else’s products and services. You can also accept ads, but the truth is you’ll 31 of 37 - Brought To You By Blogelina.com

You just need the right niche, the right plan, and the right mindset in order to promote your blog, and the products and services that you believe in to the right audience on a regular and continuing basis. Finances need to be determined from day one, and if you continued to be organized and make goals, and concrete plans and stick to them you will reach your financial goals. Use a calendar to plan each day as if it’s a real work day. Before you know it, you’ll have even more finances to take care of, which is what you want.
