Mass of Remembrance

Monday, November 2, 7pm in the Church.  We Invite You to Bring a Picture of Your Deceased Loved  One to Display on the Altar.

Pastor’s Corner If we take the miracle of Cana literally, we reduce it to a once-off wonder and greatly limit its meaning. It’s not really about the power to change water into wine. We already know how to do that – it happens every year in our vineyards and wineries. The miracle is a deeper and broader meaning and one that is valid for all time. It’s about something far more wonderful. In attempting to describe the relationship between God and his people, the Bible uses the image of the bridegroom and his bride. And in describing the joy God finds among his people, it uses the image of a wedding feast. The First Reading contains a message of hope for God’s people at one of the lowest moments in their history. Jerusalem lay in ruins and many of the people were exiled in Babylon. Israel, once God’s bride, is now like a widow bereft of children. However, her husband, God, has not forgotten her. There will be a new wedding feast. God will restore his people. This promise was fulfilled in the return from exile, but more especially in the coming of Jesus. It’s no surprise to find that Jesus started his public ministry at a wedding feast. At the wedding the wine ran out. This was a way of saying that the old religion, the old observances, had been found wanting. The time had come for the promises to be fulfilled. The time had come for a new law and a new spirit. The prophets had foretold an abundance of wine in the messianic days. At Cana Jesus provided just that. And all those who tasted the new wine agreed that it was better than the old. Those six jars were capable of holding somewhere between twenty and thirty gallons each. We see not only Jesus’s power, but also his generosity. We get a glimpse of the warmth of his heart. The new order began with an act of compassion. What Jesus did at Cana was not a one time thing. It pointed to what would happen all through his ministry. The changing of water into wine is a symbol for what he was all about. Everywhere he went the old was made new. For the widow of Nain he changed tears into joy. For Zacchaeus he changed selfishness into love. For the thief on Calvary he changed despair into hope. And on Easter morning he changed death into life.

His presence could change beyond recognition the lives of those with whom he came into contact. And he continues to do this for those who believe in him and follow him. He transforms our lives into something wonderful. He offers us a share in the divine life – nothing less than the ecstasy of communion with God. But all of this will remain at the level of theory unless we experience it in our lives; unless in some way in our own lives Jesus changes water into wine. Water is a good thing and essential for bodily survival. However, though it gives satisfaction it doesn’t give joy. Wine, on the other hand intoxicates and raises the spirit. Blessed are those who thirst for the new “wine” that Jesus provides. The old is the promise, the new is the fulfillment. Material things are not enough. Jesus brings another dimension to life. He brings a joy which the world cannot give. He asked his servants to draw out the water/ wine and take it to the steward. Jesus always used human intermediaries to convey his gifts. He asks us to share with others the gifts he has shared with us. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, let us share one of his greatest gifts, the gift of mercy. ****** At long last the good-humored boss felt compelled to call Pat into his office. “It has not escaped my attention,” he pointed out gently, “that every time there’s a big home game, you have to take your aunt to the doctor.” “You know, you’re right, sir,” exclaimed Pat. “I hadn’t realized. You don’t suppose she’s faking it now, do you?” Have a great week! God Bless! Fr. Pat

Thank You For Your Gifts!

During this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are offering “Moments of Mercy” instead of “Why do Catholics do That?” We invite you to share about your responses to the questions in your families and with others. May you experience many moments of mercy through this year!

Your family will be hosting a large dinner party.

There is a family next door. Although you never got to know them well, you are aware that the couple divorced in the past few months. You have noticed that mom isn’t home until late, and the 2 children are by themselves a lot. As you shop for food for the party, the thought of inviting the neighbors crosses your mind. Mercy can help us to offer hospitality to those we may not normally consider. ● Would you invite the family to dinner? ● Beyond an invitation to a meal, what other things could be done to offer mercy? ● How could ‘ordinary water’ become ‘the best wine’ for this family? ● What could you do in your daily life to be merciful in similar situations?

Stewardship Reflection ~ January 17, 2016 We have often maintained that there is a stewardship message in every reading from Holy Scripture. Today’s readings are no exception, from the reminder that “God rejoices in each of us” to “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit” from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians to the Gospel story about the miracle at the wedding in Cana as reported in John. Although each of those messages is worthy of our thought, meditation, and reflection, we would like to focus on a particular line in St. John’s Gospel, a statement which literally says it all about stewardship as a way of life. Our Blessed Mother Mary says quite simply, “Do whatever He tells you.” Her message for those gathered at the wedding and her message for us is the same. The whole purpose of our lives is to seek and ascertain what it is that the Lord is telling us. We all understand that is not easy, and for many of us becomes a lifelong quest. Yet, that is exactly what Mary says to us, and it is exactly what we need to do. Through prayer and discernment each of us must try to discover what the Lord is “telling” us. That requires prayer on our part; it means we have to listen more than speak; and it means we need to identify, recognize, and use our gifts.

Saint Vincent de Paul “We never realize ourselves so vividly as when we are in the full glow of love for others.” -source unknown.
