From the Pastor’s Desk  Del Escritorio del Pastor Dear parishioners and friends: Please excuse my absence from the parish this week as I leave on Monday and travel to Aguascalientes, Mexico for one week. Aguascalientes, Mexico is about a sixhour drive from Mexico City and is the location of the Mother House for the Missionary Sisters of the Most Pure Virgin Mary. The Missionary Sisters are the Sisters I worked with when I was Pastor at Holy Cross Parish in Bridgeton. The Sisters serve the community in Bridgeton in many ways. The Sisters also serve at Bishop Schad Regional School in Vineland. The Sisters have many Missions and Schools in Mexico and also serve in Peru and Nigeria, Africa. In the United States the Sisters work in Texas, Washington State and of course, here in the Camden Diocese. On my first visit to their Mother House in Mexico three years ago, the Sisters took me to visit an Orphanage for girls that the Sisters run called Hogar de Las Niñas. There are about 25 to 30 girls living there with no parents to care for them. Some were literally left on the doorstep. Others have parents and families that cannot care for them because of extreme poverty, health reasons or past criminal behavior. The girls range from 2 years old to 18 years old. The Sisters allow them to stay until they are ready to go to college or go out to work on their own. It is amazing and beautiful work and from my first visit the girls stole my heart. Thank God, they are well cared for by the Sisters and staff. Upon learning I was a priest from the United States one of the young girls asked if I lived near Disney World. (I guess for them Disney represents the USA). I said no, that I did not live close to Disney, and sadly thought that they may never have a chance to visit a place my own nieces and nephews have visited several times. When I visit I will bring with me some donations I collected from family, friends and Holy Cross Parish. Perhaps next year our Parish will help them. Most of all I will bring to the children the love of God from people who live far away. I will also share with them my news that I am the Pastor of a new Parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and I will bring with me your love and prayers and tell them that their American family is growing. Please keep us in your prayers this week as I will remember you and your family in my prayers. God Bless you and your Family, Father Vince

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” LUKE 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges his Stewards to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle.

Priestly Vocations What does a seminarian study? “Intellectual formation contributes to spiritual formation. The study of the traditions of faith and the experiences of faith among the saints and the people of God serves to deepen one’s own spiritual journey.” (Program of Priestly Formation, 113) A man with little or no previous college experience would complete a traditional four year Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, while men who have already earned a Bachelor’s degree from another accredited academic institution would complete a two year program of study known as Pre-Theology. Philosophy studies include subjects such as the history of ancient, medieval, and contemporary philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and logic, in addition to ancient and modern languages and other subjects and electives. “The study of philosophy is fundamental and indispensable to the structure of theological studies and to the formation of candidates for the priesthood. It is not by chance that the curriculum of theological studies is preceded by a time of special study of philosophy.” (PPF 152) Following the philosophical studies, either as a college degree or in pre-theology, seminarians study four years of theology, including subjects such as Sacred Scripture, Trinitarian Theology, Christology, Pneumatology, Ecclesiology, Moral Theology, Liturgy and the Sacraments, Church History, Canon Law, and Homiletics. Prayer for Priestly Vocations “Lord Jesus, we ask you to bless the Diocese of Camden with an increase of vocations to the priesthood. We pray that young men from our parishes and families will hear your call and be both generous and courageous in their response. May more young men serve you as priests who teach the faith, preach the Gospel, celebrate the sacraments and make you present among us through their ministry. Encourage them to embrace the joy-filled and fulfilling life of a diocesan priest. May parents support priestly vocations in their families by prayer and good example. We entrust these prayers through Mary Immaculate, our patroness, hopeful that you will bless our diocese with more priests in the near future…who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.”
