A Message from Bianca

IN THIS ISSUE

Dear Residents, Happy New Year and welcome to our first edition for 2016! I hope everyone had a restful holiday period and enjoyed some quality time with your loved ones. Our facility will be assessed for accreditation next month, on the 16th, 17th & 18th of February. This occurs around every three years, where a team will attend the facility to observe our practices and talk to residents and relatives for feedback.

Our herb garden has taken off. With lots of TLC from our residents, we now have plenty of basil, strawberries, rosemary, spring onions plus a few more all ready for use.

Don’t forget my door is always open. If you have any concerns, even if you just want to pop in and say hello, please do so. God bless Bianca Ivancic ESM

BLAKEHURST HAPPENINGS – HIGHLIGHTS FROM DECEMBER The facility was full of the Christmas spirit last month, with plenty of Christmas orientated activities. We had the children from Mater Dei primary school visit, preforming Christmas carols and dancing. There were so many that wanted to perform for us they had to visit on two different days. But there were no complaints here as everyone enjoyed their performances as well as having a chat with the students afterwards.

were very impressed with the delicious food served as well as the beer and wine of course.

Entertainment followed with David Watkins, who had us all singing and tapping and laughing along. David even managed to get some of us up dancing!

helpers, was willing to pay a visit and hand out some tasty gold coins, I just hope no one tried to use them down the corner shop. Kris’s and her feathered friends were a delight to have visit the facility. With everyone getting in the mood, and dressing up for the occasion.

In some cases we couldn’t find the bird! The Resident/Relative Christmas party went off with a bang, the place was looking great with the tables decorated with perfection. The residents

The party finished off with a special visit from the big man in red, well maybe not quite the man himself. But one of his loyal

New Year’s Eve celebrations started early with Kane coming in to entertain us. I’m not sure how many made it to midnight with all the excitement of the day!

BLAKEHURST RESIDENT OF THE MONTH

Fay Burgess “Bubbles” Fay was born in Hobart on Wednesday 31/8/1932, she was the only child of Vera and David McGeachan of Kingsgrove. Attending Clemton Park primary school then St George Girls High. Fay left school at the intermediate level and went to work as a typist at MLC. While on a sea voyage, in 1950, Fay met her future husband, Bob. The two married in 1954 at St Thomas Church of

England in Kingsgrove. They started off buying a block in Narwee and later settled in Connells Point, with their four son’s. Robertson, Matthew, Gilbert, and Cameron. You would have thought having four boys would have kept Fay busy enough, but no, Fay then decided to go back to school and get a B.A Degree at the age of 46. All this and Fay was still able to enjoy time travelling all over the world with Bob and his work. Fay is a very proud mother, with all of her son’s graduating in their chosen professions. Her inspiration throughout life has been Florence Nightingale, a woman of strength. Fay enjoys the arts, sewing, poetry, painting and singing, you may have heard her singing-a-long throughout the day. It’s only fitting that Fay’s special treat, she has chosen, for being Resident of the month be art related. Fay will be attending an Irish concert on March 7th, so look out for her pictures and a full review of her day out in the April Newsletter!

required and making sure everyone was happy.

Rhonda had us all loaded up in the bus ready to go, smooth sailing was the trip there, and that’s how it was for the rest of the day.

The meals were reasonable in price while the portions were generous. A little too big for some of us, but there’s always room for dessert! Not one of us complained about our meals, each and every one having a tasty dish.

The staff were friendly, assisting us when

So the meals are very nice, the staff great, the

only thing that was missing was a picturesque view. Maybe next time there might be some striking tennis players on the court. Overall the day was very enjoyable, I would definitely come back even if it was just for the tiramisu.

JOKE OF THE MONTH Darren Lockyer, the Pope, John Howard & a school boy were all on the same plane when the engine failed and started to plummet towards the Earth. They all realised that there was 4 of them & only 3 parachutes. Darren Lockyer got up & said I am a sporting superstar & must live so that I can please my fans & continue my career to beat the Kiwi's & the Poms in the trinations series. So he grabbed a parachute and jumped out of the plane. Then John Howard got up and said I am the smartest Prime Minister Australia has ever have and I need to live to continue to govern the nation. Then the Pope said to the school boy & said I am old & have lived my life so you should take the last parachute. The school boy replied, no its ok, the worlds smartest Prime Minister took my school bag so there’s one for each of us!

Riddle Answer: He fills the 3 gallon jug then empties it into the 5gallon jug. He then refills the 3 gallon jug and continues to fill the 5gallon jug until it’s full. Leaving exactly 1 gallon in the 3gallon jug.
