Impregnated bits Impregnated diamond drill bits are designed to perform as grinders. Diamonds are embedded in an infiltred or sintered matrix. The matrix erodes away at the same rate as the diamonds become worn and rounded. Thus new sharp diamonds are exposed to continue cutting through the rock. The combination of diamonds and matrix determine the performance of an impregnated bit. The simultaneous erosion of the matrix and the diamonds makes the bit self sharpening.

The diamonds are carefully selected by quality and size for the application. Through advanced manufacturing technology an extensive range of drilling requirements can be satisfied. Continuous control of the processes at each step in the manufacturing ensures that all bits are of identical quality. This consistent high quality means more drill metres per bit.

The ideal combination of optimal penetration rate and wear resistance matched to achieve the ultimate in drilling economy. In most geological formations, impregnated bits are more economical to use than surface set bits as they provide additional benefits: n Greater resistance to wear in most formations, particularly in fissured and fractured formations. n Less sensitive to abuse, rough handling and improper use.

Diamonds

Only synthetic diamonds, except for gauge stones, are used in the manufacture of Atlas Copco impregnated bits. The constancy of shape, granular size, and strength make synthetic diamonds better than natural stones.

Crown height

Standard impregnated drill bits are available with different matrix heights: n n n n

Low and standard height is used for conventional bits where bit life does not effect the number of round trips and when large wear of the bit diameter is anticipated (meaning that extra high matrix cannot be fully utilized). For wire line bits, Extra or Super matrix height is generally recommended.

Most impregnated bits have W-profile.

Surface set bits Atlas Copco surface set bits are manufactured to the highest standards in the industry for the ultimate in drilling performance. Atlas Copco surface set bits have proven to have a high penetration rate, long service life, and best adaptability to changing formations. The diamonds in these bits are arranged in patterns developed from many years of practical field experience. The patterns vary according to the size of the stones used. The patterns are important for the service life and penetration rate of the bit. The diamonds used are imbedded in a hard matrix with high resistance to erosion.

Matrix

Surface set bits are manufactured using a universal hard type of matrix for all formations.

Diamond quality

The standard range of natural diamonds for surface set bits is chosen in a special allround grade with special quality. The quality includes selected and processed diamonds with a highly polished surface. These stones have a high impact resistance and may be considered as an universal type. Recommended for soft to medium hard formations.

Diamond sizes (spc – stones per carat) As a general rule; the softer formation, the larger the diamonds used i.e. 20 to 25 spc. In hard formation, smaller diamonds 30 to 50 spc are typical. Atlas Copco standard diamond sizes are: 20/25 and 30/35 spc 1 carat = Diamond weight of 0.2 g Diamond content is measured in carat (CRT). Other diamond qualities and sizes on request.

Shells and casing Reaming shells

Casing shoes

A reaming shell has to be replaced when its diameter becomes less than the diameter of the new bit. In this way only the very last part of the hole has to be reamed when a new bit is inserted. A reaming shell also helps to stabilize the core barrel. Reaming shells are available for all types of core barrels and drill bits.

Casing shoes have cutting segments on the front and exterior, while the interior is smooth. The inner diameter of the casing shoe is sufficiently large to permit free passage of drill bits and core barrels in corresponding sizes.

Reaming shells are placed behind the drill bit on the core barrel to maintain the correct hole diameter and stabilize the core barrel.

Atlas Copco manufactures a comprehensive range of diamond and tungsten carbide (Corborit) casing shoes for standard drilling or positioning casing tubes into drill holes.

n Impregnated casing shoe bits are manufactured with very hard matrix.

Surface set reaming shells

Standard Atlas Copco surface set reaming shell set with specially selected diamonds and PDC pins. Well designed waterways, reinforced with PDC pins, facilitate effective flushing and contribute to long service life and good drilling economy for both reaming shells and drill bits. Reaming shells are avialable in different designs: n 10" Double ring reaming shell available only for BQ, NQ, HQ (need inner tube adjustment). n FH special heavy duty design for long life with extra stabilization. n STD (Standard design).

TC bits Bits for soil investigations and geotechnical drilling A range of bits designed especially for soil investigations and geotechnical drilling, but also suitable in some applications for mineral exploration. Tungsten Carbide (TC) bits

Carbide bits are normally used for coring in softer rock formations, overburden drilling, and cleaning of drill holes. Atlas Copco manufactures two different types of tungsten carbide bits: n TC bits with octagonal inserts n TC CORBORIT® bits

These bits have octagonal tungsten carbide inserts what are ground at an angle of 10° to form the cutting edges. The quality of the tungsten carbide chosen has been specially developed for rotary drilling to give high wear resistance. The carbide inserts can be reground. TC octagonal insert

TC Corborit® bits

Corborit is another type of tungsten carbide bits manufactured of crushed carbide chips with a granular size of 2-5 mm, mixed with a special alloy. Corborit bits have considerably more cutting edges than standard TC bits and are recommended in medium to medium hard sedimentary formations. Corborit bits cause less vibration and offer better core recovery than standard TC bits. All TC bits can be used in clean-out operations, e.g. for the removal of steel fragments from a drill hole.

PDC bits

PDC (Poly-crystalline Diamond Composite) bits

PDC bits are an alternative to TC bits and surface set diamond bits, when drilling in non-consolidated and medium hard rock formations. We offert two types of PDC bits: n Diapax n Tripax

Drilling parameters Drilling recommendations

To select a suitable diamond bit for a given situation, basic information is needed: n Geology n Type and size of core barrel n Flushing media The final performance with selected bit depends on following parameters controlled by the operator: n n n n n

WOB – weight on bit ROP – rate of penetration RPM – revolution per minute RPI/RPC – revolution per inch/cm Flushing

Craelius impregnated diamond bits are supplied with recommended drilling parameters for best performance. Sometimes an impregnated drill bit become blunt. Reason could be, difficult drilling conditions, hard formation, wrong drilling parameters, wrong bit type etc. To sharpen an impregnated bit is a delicate process. If sharpening is not correct done, you will loose matrix and bit life. Momentarily increase the WOB by approximately 15-25%, at the same time, slowly reduce water flow to a level not less than what is indicated on the bit sticker. When the bit begins to sharpen, noticed by increase in drill system pressure and lower rotation speed, reduce the WOB and increase water flow to normal value.

Penetration rate

Penetration rate (ROP) is a very important drilling parameter especially for impregnated bits. The value should be kept constant and set as high as possible. High ROP keeps the bit sharp and return best performance.ROP depends on following conditions: n n n n n n

Revolution per minute

Impregnated bits should generally be used with high revolution per minute (RPM). Depending on bit diameter, rock condition and machine capacity. Peripherical speed 2-5 m/s is recommended for impregnated bits. For surface set diamond bits peripherical speed 1-3m/s is recommended. The RPM diagram gives a rough recommendation for RPMrelated to bit type and hole diameter.

Weight on bit Weight on bit (WOB) is not an operation parameter, the value is a result to maintain a constant penetration rate (ROP). Diamec APC drill adjust WOB automatically for a preset ROP. The value of WOB for a chosen ROP indicates the actual drilling condition. Too high WOB value might cause problem such as: n Excessive wear on bit n Hole deviation n Damage or wear on core barrel and rods Please note! Recommended max WOB in the bit sticker is max allowed value to avoid damage. Temporary high WOB may be applied to sharpen the bit. Too low WOB will polish the bit and it will loose its self-sharpening ability.

Drilling parameters Revolution per rate of penetration

Flushing

Revolution per inch (RPI) or revolution per centimetre (RPC) of advance has been developed as an index to maintain correct relationship between RPM and ROP.

Particularly for impregnated bits, bit performance is strongly dependent on water flushing. The flushing has three purposes: cooling the bit, lubricating the bit and drill string and to lift up the cuttings. Some bit types need a lot of water to perform well, others do not.

Today Atlas Copco bits are design to perform with much higher ROP than the index originally was based on. The index should be considered as a starting point.

For most bit types a reduced amount of water sharpens the bit and reduces bit life, while a lot of water can polish the bit but increase the bit life. This is most valid in hard and polishing rock.

Index recommendation: RPI 200-250 (RPC 80-100) For recommended RPM 1200 you can expect ROP 6" (15cm) per minute

Suitable amount of water for each bit type is stated on the sticker for drilling parameters.

ROP = RPM/RPI = 1200/200 = 6 (inch/min) ROP = RPM/RPC = 1200/80 = 15 (cm/min)

The required cutting volume to lift up the cuttings, depends on hole diameter and drill rod size. Required water volume can be calculated in the diagram below.

Please note! Higher ROP  Higher RPM  Higher flow rate

Always use the higher volume of the values in the diagram and recommended on the bit sticker. It is highly recommended to use an accurate flow meter.

Example: A 76 mm diameter hole is to be drilled, the drill rod diameter is 53 mm and the desired flushing water velocity is 40 cm/s. Find the line for the 76 mm hole/53 mm drill rod; then find the velocity 40 cm/s on the curve’s X-axis. Follow the line 76/50 until it bisects the 40 cm/s line, then follow a horizontal line to the left line and read off the water volume = 63 l/min.
