Biographie von Joseph-Louis Lagrange Varianten der Bezeichnung: auch Joseph Louis getauft auf den Namen Giuseppe Lodovico Lagrangia. Geburts- und Todesdaten: (∗) 25. Januar 1736 in Turin, Hauptstadt des K¨onigreichs Sardinien-Piemont, heute Italien (†) 10. April 1813 Paris, Frankreich Familiendaten: Lagranges Vater war Giuseppe Francesco Lodovico Lagrangia, Schatzmeister ¨ im Bureau f¨ ur Offentliche Arbeiten und Befestigung in Turin, die Mutter war Teresa Grosso, einzige Tochter eines Arztes. Joseph-Louis war das ¨alteste von dreizehn Kindern, von denen insgesamt nur zwei u ¨berlebten. Die Familie hatte verwandtschaftliche Beziehungen nach Frankreich. Sein Vater hatte durch Spekulationen hohe Verluste erlitten. In Berlin heiratete Lagrange seine Cousine Vittoria Conti, doch ihre Gesundheit war noch schlechter als die seine und sie starb 1783, was bei Lagrange Depressionen verursachte. In Paris heiratete er dann die Tochter eines Astronomen-Kollegen von der Acad´emie des Sciences Ren´ee-Fran¸coiseAd´elaide Le Monnier. Lagrange hatte keine Kinder Ausbildung: Der Vater wollte, daß sein Sohn Anwalt w¨ urde, doch schon auf der Schule begann Joseph-Louis sich nach der Lekt¨ ure von Edmond Halleys (1656-1742) Werk u ¨ber den Gebrauch der Algebra in der Optik von 1693 interessierte sich Joseph-Louis mehr f¨ ur Mathematik und dabei besonders f¨ ur Geometrie. Am Kolleg von Turin wurde die Physik durch Giambattista Beccaria (1716-1781) so ausgezeichnet vermittelt, so daß Lagrange beschloß, sich der Mathematik zu widmen. Beruflicher Werdegang: 1754 ver¨offentlichte Lagrange seinen ersten mathematischen Artikel in Form eines an Giulio Fagano (1682-1766) geschriebenen Briefes, den er unter dem Namen Luigi De la Grange Tournier ver¨offentlichte. Euler ver¨offentlichte diesen Brief. Danach mußte er entdecken, daß im Briefwechsel zwischen Gott-

fried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) und Jakob Bernoulli (1654-1705) dieselben Resultate erw¨ahnt wurden, was ihn f¨ urchten ließ, man k¨onne ihn als Plagiator ansehen. Daher strengte er sich nun mehr an. Lagrange schickte Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) mehrere seiner Arbeiten, darunter eine zum Tautochrone. Trotz seiner Jugend - er war erst neunzehn Jahren alt - erhielt Lagrange 1755 einen Lehrstuhl f¨ ur Mathematik an der K¨oniglichen Artillerieschule in Turin. Er wurde 1757 Mitbegr¨ under der Turiner Akademie, wo er seine ersten wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten u ¨ber Differentialgleichungen und Variationsrechnungen ver¨offentlichte. Schon 1761 galt Lagrange als gr¨oßter lebender Mathematiker, aber durch ¨ Uberarbeitung war seine Gesundheit angeschlagen. Da Lagrange Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis’ (1698-1759) “Prinzip des kleinstes Kraftaufwandes” bef¨ urwortete, empfahl ihn derselbe, damals Pr¨asident der Berliner Akademie, f¨ ur eine Position in Preußen. Im Jahre 1766 berief Friedrich der Große Lagrange als Direktor der Berliner Akademie in der Nachfolge von Leonhard Euler nach Berlin, wo Lagrange die n¨achsten zwanzig Jahre blieb und forschte. Er befaßte sich mit Problemen der Astronomie, sowie mit der partiellen Differentialgleichungen sowie Fragen aus Geometrie und Algebra. Nach dem Tod Friedrichs des Großen (1786) wurde er von Louis XVI nach Paris eingeladen, bekam dort aber Depressionen. 1788 erschien hier sein Werk u ¨ber theoretische Physik M´ecanique analytique. Er u ¨berstand die Franz¨osische Revolution in Frankreich und durfte, obwohl alle Ausl¨ander ausgewiesen wurden, in Frankreich bleiben. Er wurde Haupt der Kommission u ¨ber die Reformen von Maß und Gewicht. Ab 1795 lehrte er eine zeitlang an der ´ neugegr¨ undeten Ecole Normale Sup´erieure, wechselte aber 1697 zur neu´ gegr¨ undeten Ecole Polytechnique und wurde Mitglied des neugegr¨ undeten Institut de France. Zusammen mit Augustin-Louis Cauchy (1789-1857) arbeitete er auf dem Gebiet der Analysis. Lagrange gilt als gr¨oßter Mathematiker des 18. Jahrhunderts. Er begr¨ undete die analytische Mechanik (Lagrangefunktion). Außerdem befaßte er sich mit dem Dreik¨orperproblem der Himmelsmechanik (Lagrange-Punkte), der Variationsrechnung und der Theorie der komplexen Funktionen.
