Binsey Team - Our smaller communities ROUTENBECK Routenbeck is a hamlet of 6 dwellings around Routenbeck House and 3 dwellings at Riggs. These are the nearest houses to St Margaret’s Church, Wythop. The most photographed landmark is the Victorian letter box in the wall of Routenbeck House! Routenbeck is Norse for noisy stream. This beck comes down from Sale Fell and through the gardens of The Old Vicarage and Routenbeck House. The trough on the road near Sale Fell House receives water from a spring in the field above and was the water supply for Routenbeck and The Pheasant until the 1970s. The main house was built in the early 1600s and we know that a John Hudson was born there in 1662. He became Prof. of Divinity at St Mary’s Hall Oxford and Head Keeper of the Bodleian Library. In the 19th Century the owners of the Davidson Shipping line of Harrington owned Orchard House and Yew Tree Cottage, now The Old Vicarage. This influenced the choice of names for four of their sailing ships, Wythop, Routenbeck, Embleton and Castle How. A painting of the Wythop can be seen in the lounge at The Pheasant. Yew Tree Cottage, probably a farm belonging to the owners of Routenbeck House originally, was bought from the Davidson’s as a Vicarage for St Margaret’s in 1899. The money for the purchase came from Queen Anne’s Bounty and donations from the Pyncombe Trustees and Sir Henry and Lady Vane of Hutton-in-the-forest. It remained a Vicarage until 1949 when it was sold as a private dwelling when the parishes of Wythop and Embleton came under the care of one Incumbent.

Dear Friends,

The Revd. Tricia Rogers

Do you have a bucket list? One of the things I have on mine is to walk the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. A few years ago a colleague did it just after he retired and I followed with great interest his daily blogs : we walked with him up the hills, felt for him as his shins hurt and his feet became swollen. But rejoiced at the days when he managed 20 miles and loved hearing about the people he met along the way and the lodgings they shared at night. Then there were the thoughts he shared about having time to think as he walked alone, about how he had time to take in the fantastic sights around him and to give thanks to God. To share with God the things he had not had time to do in his busy day job in a prison.

' Let’s take time in our busy, driven world for the spiritual, to be able to focus on God and his purposes for us. '

The English pilgrims he met were far fewer than many other nationalities but all shared the same desire – to reach the Cathedral of St James in Santiago de Compostela and to use the time, space, joy and pain to learn more about their relationship with God. Actually the whole of life is like a pilgrimage where we stumble and shuffle our way up fells and down valleys, finding our way through this sometimes frightening and bewildering world, enjoying the views, enduring the struggles, and discovering that every other human being is first and foremost a fellow-pilgrim. We don’t of course have to go all the way to Spain to undertake a pilgrimage, every walk can become a special time. Here in the Binsey Team we are about to re-launch 12 walks between the Churches of our Team - all carefully researched by Ros Downing, some of them more difficult than others, but all of them encouraging us to look at the creation around us and to reflect upon God. Let’s take time in our busy, driven world for the spiritual, to be able to focus on God and his purposes for us. As we walk together I am sure we shall quickly discover the majesty around us and God working among the many different people and places that make up this special parish. Every blessing Tricia

Harvest time for YOU

Fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22,23, Ps 34:8)

Sometimes a law of nature is very similar to a law of the spirit. Take the whole business of harvest, or ‘sowing and reaping’. The Bible tells us: “A farmer who plants just a few seeds will get only a small crop, but if he plants much, he will reap much.” (2 Cor 9:6)

Opportunities To ripen your fruit in our lives, Lord, give us opportunities.

The most sensitive nerve on our body is the one that runs to our cheque book. Money represents our time, our security and our hard work. It gives us independence and power. So when God begins to talk to us about giving more of our money to him – sowing it in his service – we can feel very alarmed. The seed a farmer sows in a field may sometimes be lost, but not the seed that we give to God. What we sow with regards to our time, gifts and money in service to others God will make sure we one day reap – in a harvest of spiritual riches that we can never lose.

To grow in your Spirit, Know your warmth And your light, Allow the segments of Self-control, gentleness, Faithfulness, goodness, Kindness, patience, peace and joy To be lubricated and sweetened By love, Showing the world Your nature transforming Our natures, In the fruit bowl of our lives In Jesus. Lord give opportunities For the hungry to taste Your ripening fruit in us, See that you are good And come to you. By Daphne Kitching

Hold Hands and stick together ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.’ Matthew 18.2-4 Most of what we really need to know about how to live, and what to do and how to be, we learned at Nursery School. Wisdom was not at the top of the University Mountain, but there in the sand tray at Nursery. These are the things we learned. Share everything. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things which aren’t yours. Say you are sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush the toilet. Freshly baked biscuits and milk are good for you. Learn about things and paint and sing and dance and work every day. Have a sleep every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the plastic cup? The roots go down and the shoot goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and even the little seed in the plastic up – they all die. And so do we. Think of what a better world it would be if we all – the whole world – had biscuits and milk about three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down for a nap; or if we had a basic policy in our nations to always put things back where we found them and to clean up our own messes. And it’s still true however old you are, when you go out into the world it is best to hold hands and to stick together. 4

Do you want a Visit from the Church? If you would like a visit from the Church, we have a group of people commissioned by the Bishop to be our Pastoral Visitors, who along with the clergy are available and willing to visit anyone either at home or in hospital or in a nursing home. Maybe you know a person who is ill or is housebound for some reason and would just like to chat to someone. Or possibly your neighbour has been taken into hospital? Maybe you’ve got small children and would just like a bit of adult conversation? You can ask for a visit for yourself, or for someone else, and a member of the team will get in touch to arrange a suitable time. E.mail us at [email protected] or leave a message on 016973 7150. Or simply let one of the Churchwardens know and they will forward your request on to us. Please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here for you.

Baptism in the Binsey Team We are really pleased when parents approach us about Baptism (sometimes known as Christening) for their child. It's a very important step both for the parents and for the child. Infant Baptism involves parents, and Godparents making a public commitment about their own Christian faith and the Church making a commitment to pray for their child, so that as they grow, with their help and ours they may be able to live out in practice the Christian life. To enable parents to do this we ask that you to come and join us in worship, either at any of our Team Churches, or in other venues such as ‘Stepping Stones’ (café Church) or at Messy Church (Isel), at some time in the two months BEFORE the date of baptism and to attend our short Baptism Preparation course (see below). Those bringing children to baptism need to attend each session but other family members are really welcome to come along as well. Godparents are expected to come along to session 2 but are welcome to be at all the sessions Home Visit

Lovingly crafted items were also on display including our internationally famous knitted Nativity scene (more about this next month). Our scarves and owls proved to be very popular. Refreshing cups of tea and delicious buns, scones etc were served in the much admired, refurbished Sunday School room (and the craic was good). A Grand total of £651.84 was raised; thanks to everyone involved in so many ways over the three days.

By the way, they are not proud - they would welcome your help if you ever feel the urge to strim or mow!

SCHOOLS NEWS Ireby CoE School Welcome to our new Head Teacher. As you may remember from my previous letters, the governors at Ireby CE School embarked earlier this year on the search for a new head teacher for our school. Before I introduce her I would like to once again, on behalf of the Governing Body, give my sincere thanks to Alison Dickinson for all her hard work at Ireby School over the last ten years: and also to Karen Roberts who did a wonderful job as temporary head while a new head teacher was appointed. Our new head teacher is Mrs Nyrie Davies. Originally from Australia – don’t mention “The Ashes” - Nyrie settled in Cumbria in 2003 and brings to Ireby School a wealth of teaching and management experience which will set her in good stead for her new position. I hope you will join with me in welcoming her and wishing her well as she takes on this important and challenging role. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all members of our local community who give so much to make Ireby School the special place that it is: I trust that you will continue to support Mrs Davies as you have supported Alison and Karen in the past. Any more volunteers warmly welcomed!

The award, to remember a past pupil of the school who as you will know tragically died earlier this year, was the result of an approach by Mrs Sandra Wilson to the governors who asked if something could be done to honour Lee’s memory. This the governors were proud to do. The award is open to all pupils at Ireby School and was this year presented by Lee’s Cousin, Ashleigh Tolson (accompanied by Lee’s widow, Joanne) to Charlotte Renwick. The trophy will be on permanent display in school.

Search for a Governor…or two Amongst all the other changes happening at school there have been some changes to the Governing Body. Following the resignations, due to changing work commitments, of Stephen Cox and Tanya Laing, we now have two vacancies on the governing body. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Stephen and Tanya for their hard work and input to the governing body and ask if there are any members of the local community who would be willing to take on the hugely rewarding role of School Governor at Ireby? Please contact me directly for further information if you are interested on taking on this important role. The Annual School Barbeque Regards to all in our local community, and once The school barbeque that took place on July 12th was again, thank you for the support that you give to our once again a huge success: just over £1,000 was school. raised for school funds. Thank you all for your Adrian Hyde support. Chair of Governors, Ireby CE School This year the barbeque played host to the inaugural presentation of the Lee Tolson Memorial Award for Overall Sporting Achievement. 18

School blues A little girl had just finished her first week of school.... “I'm just wasting my time,” she said to her mother. “I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!” With School in mind…. Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Education is what is left over when you subtract what you have forgotten from what you have learned. A mixture of misery and education is highly explosive. Herbert Samuel Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE NEWS Bassenthwaite WI celebr ated the Centenar y of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes and their 95th Anniversary with a party for members, former members and friends from Bassenthwaite. President Margaret Green welcomed over 70 people and it was good to see so many friends both old and new joining us in the Parish Room. Entertainment was provided by Gordon Pickering’s quintet Side by Side who played a selection of songs and tunes representing each decade of the last 100 years. They soon had us all singing along and a few brave dancers - great Charleston Ros! Helen Hinvest, Chairman of the Cumbria-Cumberland Federation kindly brought along the Federation Banner which shows small panels representing each WI in the Federation. The Bassenthwaite panel has a motif of the lake and the osprey and members and friends were interested to see the individual panels from other WIs and how they had chosen to represent their particular area. Bassenthwaite was one of the earliest WI’s to be formed in Cumberland and memorabilia from the minutes of the first meeting in 1919, through photographs and newspaper cuttings over the last 95 years to the present day were on display and drew much attention. A competition, organised by Mary Brewis to identify current WI members from childhood photographs had people puzzling. Congratulations to Verena Cannon, the runaway winner, with over half correct. Thank you to all members who generously provided a sumptuous and ample supper. Thank you also to all members and friends who gave time before, during and after the party to assist with the myriad of tasks to ensure the evening ran smoothly. Finally a very special thank you to Ros Downing whose inspiration and meticulous October 2015

organisation and hard work resulted in an evening enjoyed and remembered by all. The speaker at our next meeting, on October 8th 7.30 in the Church Room, will be Allan Patterson with “ Words on Wood”, guests and new members are welcome. The competition will be a Wood carving. Hostesses for the evening are Mesdames I. Harrington and I. Ward. Entertainment: Mesdames V. Barton, B. Cooper-Holmes and S. Mendus. The next committee meeting will be on October 5th. Bothel and Kirkland WI wer e given an inter esting and useful talk by Ian Abernethy on self - defence. He outlined the stages on how to assess fear and dangerous situations, giving us an understanding of how the body reacts and what we should do on such occasions. He stressed that prevention was better than having to act to such situations. Maggie Bell thanked Ian for the talk and hoped that we never have to use his useful information! Further plans were made for the Autumn meeting of the WI at Aspatria Rugby Club on the 23rd September, and menu choices were made for the 90th birthday party in October. The members had enjoyed their summer outing to the Haig Mining Museum. The venue for Christmas dinner was agreed. Eileen Bell won the raffle and Betty Earle the competition for the most items in a jar beginning with the latter S!

Embleton W I Meeting September 9th 2015 16 members of Embleton WI and one guest met at the Village Hall on 9th September. We were brilliantly entertained by the Cockermouth Ukulele Band with a selection of music by artists such as The Beatles and The Travelling Wilburys. Judging from the level of audience participation everyone, band included, had a great time. Andrea Cameron won the competition for piece of sheet music with Chrissie Veitch 2nd. The raffle was won by Myrtle Hind. Our next meeting will be at Embleton Village Hall on Wednesday 14 October at 7.30 pm. Our speaker will be David Hopkinson who will talk about Inheritance Tax Planning. Guests and new members are very welcome: please contact our secretary, Joanna South 01900 828110 for information. Ireby WI Members of Ireby WI had some unexpected visitors to their September meeting, when they celebrated the centenary of the WI movement in Britain. The President first introduced Madge Watt all the way from Ontario, Canada. She was a very uncompromising looking lady, dressed in a severe long-skirted suit, a very masculine shirt, a tie and a wonderful pot-pie hat pulled severely down almost to her eye-brows. She had come to tell us about the WI which had begun in Canada and had seen the need for such an organisation here, being supported by the Marquis of Anglesey. The principles of self determination, Truth, Tolerance, Justice and Fellowship which applied then are the same as today. The difference was that the First World War made homemaking skills of paramount importance, while the Suffragette movement encouraged women to be independent and stand up for their rights. Madge was followed by Lady Denman, a very different figure, but, curiously both these women bore a close resemblance to Pauline Bibby, who was listed as our speaker for the evening. She was dressed in a very elegant outfit with a splendid hat, perched at a much more jaunty angle, and was a lady of many interests, who remained in charge until 1946, when she stood down. The deprivations of the Second World War were then making further demands on the nation and the WI stepped into the breach, particularly in the matter of evacuation and feeding everyone, using what produce they could grow and finding substitutes for things in short supply. We all enjoyed the vinegar cake very much, which was a famous recipe of the time. In the post war years, members continued the traditions associated with home-making, and Denman College was set up to improve these skills. There was also increased emphasis on campaigns for things like equal pay, Keep Britain Tidy, Fair Trade, Recycling and saving the honey bees. We had our moments. Who can forget Calendar Girls or the slow hand-clapping of Tony Blair? Ireby WI had its own parallel history, highlights including buying its own hall in 1953 and reopening it after a complete refurbishment in 2006.

Sarah Ashburner gave the vote of thanks, partly by reading a prize-winning poem which she had written about what the WI had meant to her over the years, a fitting tribute to the organisation as a whole. Plumbland WI Meeting are held in the Village Hall, first Wednesday in the month at 7.15pm. Always open to prospective new members who are welcome to attend 2 meetings free, for a taster. New programmes were given out at our September meeting. A quick look over it revealed some interesting evenings ahead. Our September meeting was Gareth Kemble and his partner with talks and samples of coffee. The competition, a coffee cup and saucer, was won by Bridget with Margaret L. second. Margaret also won the drawing. Condolences were given to Gilda on the death of her sister, aged 93, who died at Cockermouth. Wednesday 7th October – a talk, with slides and artefacts, by Sarah. Competition: An interesting piece of glass. Uldale WI 3rd September 2015 Fifteen members and two visitors were welcomed to the September meeting and the minutes of the last meeting were approved. The food for the party was discussed and members who had won the Rose Bowl etc. were reminded to return them at the next meeting. The Christmas meal has been booked for the 10th December at Woodlands, and the menu will be circulated when it is available. The mailing from the National Federation had arrived and members were urged to write to their MPs about the Care Not Custody campaign and were informed about both 2016 subscriptions and a special performance of the Nutcracker. Ideas were sought for next year’s programme and members were told about a Macmillan coffee morning to be held on 25th September in Boltongate. After the business meeting, we had a Flower Arranging demonstration by Edna Graham. She told us how to condition and look after cut flowers before doing some beautiful arrangements for us. She arranged some flowers in a teacup and some on a cake stand before showing us a modern wedding arrangement in six jam jars. She finished her demonstration with a stunning arrangement in orange and bronze and even included a leaf from a 101 year old aspidistra! The vote of thanks was given by Elizabeth Moore. The evening ended with a delicious supper provided by Angela Marrs and Marion Pattinson. The competition was won by Joan Stamper with Sarah Ashburner coming second and the drawing, which was for the flower arrangements, was won by several members and visitors
