FOREWORD Professor Jason Underwood School of Built Environment University of Salford

Welcome to the BIM Level 3 event here in the vibrant city of Manchester. This comes in a pinnacle year when the official mandate was announced on the 4th April for BIM Level 2 on public procured projects. This follows five exciting years in the transformation of the industry leading to the development of BIM Level 2, publication of the Digital Built Britain/Level 3 strategy, together with increasing awareness and adoption which we have seen extend beyond the UK. We are now at a key point whereby significant continued effort is required to enable BIM Level 2 to ‘become business as usual’. However, this also represents a milestone in a longer-term transformational journey towards BIM Level 3, Digital Built Britain and beyond. We are at the start of the beginning and of something very exciting!

Today’s event is about looking ahead to the future and exploring the progress, challenges, and issues that face the industry on this journey to BIM Level 3 and beyond. At the core of the agenda for the day are such aspects as the importance of working towards the vision of a digitally built environment, implementation requirements, use of open and structured data, establishing transparent and open workflows, collaboration, data-centric processes, education and training, contractual and legal issues.

Please find enclosed a full event guide for today’s event, including agenda, guest speakers, sponsors, and exhibitors together with the options for our breakout lecture sessions. We are in very exciting times for our industry, and I look forward to a stimulating and informative day.

Lecture 1 – Room C16 – 11.50

Public Sector and Industry in Partnership Panel Debate

Terry Stocks – Director, Faithful+Gould, Government UK BIM Task Group Delivery Director

Supporting the industry we bring together Public Sector Bim Leaders to engage in an open debate about what they feel is essential as we head beyond level 2 and towards Level 3. The drive to embed BIM into all Public Sector projects and what is expected from the construction industry.

It is clear there will be significant benefits of reduced cost and improved quality but there will be a steep learning curve for the construction industry to deliver this throughout all activities and supply chain from planning and design, construction, facilities, cost management and reporting. Join the debate

Panel David Owens – Design & BIM Manager, Costain Highways Duane Passman – Director of 3Ts Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust Samuel Radziejowski – Strategic Asset Manager, Manchester Metropolitan University Paul Surin – Head of Built Environment at Wienerberger, Vice Chair of BIM4M2, a member of the BEE for the IET Hugh Boyes – Cyber Security lead, Institution of IET Lecture 2 – Room D7 – 11.50

The Power Behind Successful Projects Jason Ruddle – Chief Operating Officer, Elecosoft

Bringing 3D design together with project planning and management created the first integrated view for BIM – adding time to the 3-dimensional world of construction planning to create 4D BIM. It marked the start of the construction community coming together. It brought together architects, engineers and building designers with those tasked to put brick on brick and means that everyone involved can extract and visualize the progress of their activities through the lifetime of each project.

5D BIM is now enabling cost estimators and quantity surveyors to act as a part of the core BIM team, adding not only their information but their cost control expertise. This session will explore how 4D and 5D BIM is supporting digital construction.

Lecture 3 – Room F14 – 11.50

Moving to BIM Level 3 – A Methodology for Delivering Structured Data Paul Oakley – Associate Director of BIM, BRE

Lifecycle modelling, Asset Information Models, Totex, Smart Cities, Internet of Things and Big Data are all seen as future consumers of the Information element from within BIM. However, the AEC industry presently struggles to move from paper deliverables to the needs of delivering structured information in the form of Construction Operation Building information exchange (COBie). Whilst a project BIM may become anode within a Smart City, likewise a BIM product object is a node within a BIM project and then the issues with object standards and interoperable data exchange multiply exponentially.

Programme cont. BIM Object Product Libraries are often heralded as the solution to standardised data and IFC as the solution to interoperability. Yet the failure of BIM Library Objects to meet consistent standards increases risk, liability and inefficiency, not just to the BIM process, but also to the future consumers of the data. Within the session Paul Oakley Associate Director for BIM at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) explores the BIM Library Object issues, the standardisation requirements and the solution needed to bridge the Information gap between Manufacturers, Designers, Constructors and Operators along with the importance of data dictionaries as a method for defining and validating BIM object data.

Lecture 4 – Room E7 – 11.50

The Synergy of CDM2015 and BIM

Dave Carr, PgD(H&SM), FIIRSM, DipSM, FMaPS – Managing Director, Callsafe Services Ltd

A comparison with the requirements of BIM and the requirements of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM2015). Let us not miss the opportunity to incorporate the requirements of CDM2015 into the BIM management processes, so making CDM2015 more effective and efficient.

Alan Muse BSc (Hons) MSc FRICS – Global Director of Built Environment Professional Groups RICS

15.00 Special Feature Presentation 2

Leading the Future of BIM Level 3 with Data Centric Processes The management of BIM is fundamentally undertaken from either a model and document centric process which is captured by the level 2 methodology or a data centric process which is the essence of BIM level 3.

Clearbox provides a level 3 solution architecture to deliver level 2 outcomes. There is a tendency to focus on level 2 without appreciating the simplicity, scalability and efficiency that can arise from a data centric approach. Clearbox demonstrate real project examples of where such approaches have been applied with great success as well as providing an insight to what the future holds with level 3. Graeme Forbes – Managing Director, Clearbox Ltd

15.30 Developing a Learning Strategy for BIM

Clearly there is a lot to learn on the way to becoming a fully BIM-enabled organisation. But where does your approach to learning fit into your overall BIM strategy? This presentation will explore opportunities and challenges for creating a learning strategy for BIM. This will include an overview of the critical technical skills for BIM, designing training for maximum return and minimum disruption, and how your strategy needs to incorporate the changing ways that people learn. Back in 1990, it was a printing revolution with HP DesignJet leading the way. Soon after launching a monochrome model, HP introduced color printing, faster speeds, and higher quality images for new applications such as GIS. We stayed true to our identity, making technology better for everyone, everywhere. With each new printer, with each new detail, from light-resistant prints to multi-functional devices with Wi-Fi, we collaborated with our customers to make the improvements they needed. Our innovations have not only brought breakthroughs in speed, quality capabilities, workflow, consumption and cost, but have enabled the development of new technologies such as HP Latex printers, HP PageWide XL and HP 3D printers.

Now, with more than 3 million HP DesignJets around the world delivering prints after prints, HP DesignJet is a synonym of large-format printing. The most demanding drawings, from graphic designers, architects and engineers, become reality. Repro houses and Print Service Providers enjoy the most productive and cost-effective HP DesignJet solutions.

As we look ahead to the next 25 years, we strive harder to find solutions and more possibilities keeping our customers at the center of everything we do. Design is in our name, it’s who we are, and we reinvent our technologies so that technical and graphic design professionals can work in new and better ways as they design the world we live in. We evolve, we innovate and we lead. We reinvent large-format design printing.
