BIENVENIDOS al SENDERO "CONOCIENDO LA FINCA VERDE"

WELCOME TO THE TRAIL "MEETING THE GREEN FARM"

This is an interactive trail, you don’t need a guide.

To fertilize the land where we plant our crops is important to reach a good productivity and quality. We invite you to know a little more about organic fertilizer or compost.

Take some steps into the farm and please stop in the site where are two piles, the number one was initiated three months ago and number two just a few days ago.

Take a dry branch and stir the piles, explore in which one there are smaller components and in which one are

? ?

Y entonces…?

So…? What differences did you find in the size of the components of each pile? How do you think the small components of the oldest pile were obtained?

Let's see if you can find out… Which process of nature is similar to the process that occurred in the compost piles? Why is this process important?

Sigue descubriendo…

Keep discovering… What do you think that the use of compost or chemical fertilizers represent to this place?

Returning home… What waste ofyour home can be used to make compost? Would you recommend this experience to others in your neighbourhood?

Continue walking to the entrance of the cave... In the caves, each element is important and plays a role in the balance of the cave's ecosystem. A lot of bats inhabit this cave, whose excrements formbig piles on the floor, similar to soil or sand. Because of it's properties it is used as fertilizer for the crops.

In the first part of the trail you learned more about compost, and now you know that bat guano is used as an organic fertilizer. Would you like to know which one is better? Go to the other chart.

So… let's compare… use your knowledge and logic Which is the time and physical eff ort that the farmer invests to obtain bat guano or make compost?

So…what did you discover? What differences did you find between the two kind of fertilizers when it comes to time and effort? What do you believe these differences are about?

Y ahora...

And now... Think about the risks that you believe that the farmer takes to obtain bat guano or make compost.

Let's think "green"… think about the environment. What impact do you believe causes the harvest of guano and the preparation of compost on the environment?

Do you know that... Bat guano is the home of many animals like wood-louse (isopods), mites, beetles, spiders and others. Some of them feed on it and others are predators of bat guano feeders. Plus, the guano is key to keeping the humidity and balance of the caves. However you must also know that a microscopic fungi that grows on the bat guano of some caves can cause respiratory diseases inhaled.

When you return to your home… Which fertilizer will you use in the crops of your farm, backyard, garden or flower pots of your home? Why?

Would you like to know dry bathrooms? We invite you walk along the trail. Pay attention to the charts, they will guide you.

Stop to think Think of the bathroom that you have at your home. How do you think it works? Where do the residues go?

Observe and research Look at the real bathroom model and investigate its works. Identify which are the main parts and what they do. Why do we call them dry bathroom?

Cuestionando…

Questioning… What are the differences in the functioning between your bathroom and this one, in the way that they work?

Useful information The place where you are standing is settled in a soil composed by limestone which is very porous, allowing water and other elements to flow easily. Exactly under our feet, some meters deep there are some caves and runs subterranean water.

Entonces…

So… What do you think that the use of this bathroom means to this place?

Now move your thinking to the place where you live What do you think are the implications of the environment and human health in the functioning of your bathroom? If it were possible, would you like to make a dry bathroom in your home? Here you can find information about materials and instructions used to build them

Would you like to keep looking around this farm? We encourage you to find out how to obtain f uel here. Follow the trail until the next chart.

Time to remember… Think in what kind of fuel you use to cook your food. How do you think it is obtained?

Observe this small plant… Identify their parts as a pieces of a puzzle Investigate what fuel how it is obtained.

does it produce and

Walk to the kitchen and notice how the stove works. You may even earn a cup of coffee!

Ahora podemos preguntarnos…

Now, we wonder… What differences can you find in the way to obtain the fuel you use to cook your food and the way that you saw here?

Saquemos cuentas…

Let's do some maths… What do you think are the implications for the environment and the home economy in the use of this fuel here? Besides the biogas, what other product does the plant offer? What use has it?

Returning home… Do you think the fuel you use daily and the way they are obtained respect the environment? Ii you had the conditions, would you build a biogas plant? It's not very difficult...you can ask how to build it and which materials you will need.
