Sounds of Compassion Dear Foundation Family: How often do we take a moment to quiet our minds and truly listen to the sounds around us? Here at Good Sam, when I pause and listen, I hear miraculous, fulfilling, life-giving sounds: the first cry of a newborn, sobs of relief from patients’ family members after being told good news, and countless words of appreciation from patients for the compassionate care they received that both saved and enhanced their lives.

By being part of Good Samaritan Hospital, in whatever capacity that may be, the sounds of gratitude extend to you as well. In this issue you will see how your generosity and personal investment, whether of finances, time, or both, ensure that our families and neighbors continue to receive the top level of care they have come to know from Good Sam.

You will also see in this edition that the sounds of applause, laughter, and music (Motown to be exact!) were abundant at this year’s annual Gala. Once again, the dedication and selflessness of The Good Samaritans were evident by the caliber of the event and the clear fun and enjoyment experienced by all in attendance. Combined with the valuable causes the Gala proceeds support, the night could not have been more of a celebration.

To every member of the Foundation family, on behalf of the people and communities of Greater Cincinnati, I hope you hear my deepest and most genuine thanks.

Marilyn and Bill richardson

The Francis Fund: Helping the Less Fortunate Marilyn and Bill Richardson have a clear message. “Everyone has a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate.” Through establishing the Francis Fund at Good Samaritan Hospital, the Richardsons are doing just that, and they invite you to join in their efforts. The Francis Fund, which the couple named after Pope Francis for his emphasis on the poor, pays for mental health resources such as medication for those at Good Sam who cannot afford it. Although established by Bill and Marilyn, anyone who wants to provide healing, care, and compassion to some of our community’s most vulnerable people can contribute to the fund. In fact, it is the Richardson’s sincerest hope that you are called to do so. says. “Without insurance and without Bill, I don’t know where I’d be.”

Both Bill and Marilyn have seen firsthand the great need for the Francis Fund. Marilyn begins to describe her own experiences at Good Sam very candidly. She says, “From the photograph, I know I look like the average woman. However, I have a form of bipolar.” This illness led to the couple’s first experience with Good Sam in 2000, when Marilyn was an inpatient for the first of two hospital stays in the Behavioral Health Unit. The second was in 2005, when she participated in Good Sam’s Day Treatment Program. Since then, the couple manages her illness through a treatment combination of medication and counseling. Both Marilyn and Bill credit the psychiatric team at Good Sam with delivering what Marilyn calls “excellent care” that enabled her to “return to normal, daily life.”

Both Marilyn and Bill know the harsh reality that not everyone is as fortunate to have the financial resources or emotional support, both of which are critical to effectively managing and living with mental illness. With one in four adults in the United States having a diagnosable behavioral health condition, the need is tremendous. In our own city, more than 2,000 people are admitted to Good Sam’s Behavioral Health Unit every year. Many of these individuals struggle financially and cannot afford the ongoing cost of the mental health medication that is necessary to treat their diseases. Marilyn herself spoke with many people in such situations during her time at Good Sam, and both she and Bill were compelled to help. “The whole point of the Francis Fund is to support people who are unable to buy their own medications,” Bill says. “Anything to get the person treated and stay treated; that’s the key.” Just like any disease, he emphasizes that “there are people who are entirely capable of living normal lives if they had the right medications…that’s where the hope lies.”

When asked what her experiences at Good Sam have meant to her, Marilyn simply gets up out of her chair and states, “I’ll be right back.” She returns with a stained-glass rose she painted during Art Therapy at the Day Program. She recalls that she stared at the blank glass for three days and was scared to touch it, for that meant she would have to express her feelings. After praying, however, Marilyn painted the rose and loved it. She still keeps it to this day, saying, “I never got rid of it because I wanted to see how far I’ve come.” Through it all, Bill has been with Marilyn, as he says, “every step of the way.” They truly have a partnership and team approach to manage Marilyn’s condition which, they point out, is just like any other chronic illness. While the journey has been challenging, they are committed to taking it together. “Some mental illnesses drive couples apart; we have found just the opposite. It has drawn us closer together,” Marilyn

Because they understand that funding for mental health services is limited, Bill and Marilyn Richardson are annually doing what they can to ease the pain of others who suffer as Marilyn did. Even given their continuing contributions, however, the Francis Fund will not become self-sustaining. The need is just so great. Additional contributions are both necessary and critical for the Francis Fund to survive and to provide the compassionate healing that all people deserve. That’s why the hope also lies with you. For more information or to contribute to the Francis Fund, please contact the Foundation at 513.862.3786, or go online to www.gshfoundation.com.

REDISCOVERING VASCULAR SURGERY:

The Magellan Robotic System Continuing its position as a leader in robotic assisted surgery, Good Samaritan Hospital became the first in Greater Cincinnati to utilize a groundbreaking piece of technology to help people undergoing vascular surgery. It is called the Magellan Robotic System, and in November, 2014, was used for the first time by Patrick Muck, MD, Program Director, Vascular Surgery Residency at Good Samaritan and vascular surgeon with the TriHealth Heart Institute. Magellan allows doctors more control and precision while navigating catheters through small blood vessels in complex vascular procedures. This may help improve procedural success rates and enables more patients to be treated by less invasive endovascular methods rather than open surgery.

“this technology will grant an unprecedented level of precision to Good Samaritan vascular surgeons navigating the extremely complex anatomy of peripheral blood vessels,” says dr. Muck. “this system builds upon Good Samaritan’s longstanding experience in surgical robotics and enables the hospital to offer the broadest set of options with cutting-edge technologies for treatment of patients with vascular disease using the most innovative technology available.”

patrick Muck, Md

The robotic system is used in a wide variety of endovascular procedures. It will help surgeons navigate the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain, simplifying complicated procedures. Magellan enables surgeons to precisely steer guide wires and robotic catheters, which can rotate 360 degrees and bend 180 degrees in any direction, and provides a highly stable platform that is outside the radiation field to which the surgeon would otherwise be exposed. This may lead to fewer catheter exchanges during the procedure, more predictable procedure times, and may help facilitate navigation through very complex anatomy, potentially leading to less radiation and contrast exposure for the physician, and making the procedural outcomes more predictable for the patient. Overall, Good Samaritan has completed nine vascular surgeries since acquiring the technology in late November, 2014, including procedures to treat vascular disease in the aorta, carotid arteries, hepatic arteries, and peripheral artery disease of the lower extremities. The Robotics Program at Good Samaritan Hospital is excited to extend the benefits of robotic assisted surgery to vascular patients. These benefits would not be possible without philanthropic support, and we are truly grateful to the following donors whose generosity will create positive impacts on so many peoples’ lives: The Bonn Family, Dr. John Cardosi, Lair and Anna Kennedy, Tom and Bev Olthaus, Mr. George Osterfeld, Dr. and Mrs. Ranjit Rath, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ruthman, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sieve, and James and Darla Wainscott. More than 730 supporters of Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation gathered at the Hyatt Regency, Cincinnati, in the Regency Ballroom, where guests were treated to a cocktail reception followed by a gourmet dinner. After dinner, guests danced the night away to the music of SHOUT! featuring the Legends of Soul. Gold and silver were the colors for the evening with gold and silver blinking fedoras, flashing rings, princess crowns, and tambourines to keep the beat with the music.

The Good Samaritans is a dedicated volunteer organization of Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and includes members with ties to the medical and business community. The Good Samaritans have raised nearly $7 million in their history. This year’s Gala Chairman was Cindy Ortner and her Co-Chairman was Nancy Fehr.
