oSlo – a dIFFerent euroPean caPItal Few other capitals can offer such a variety of activities and scenery as oslo. you may have breakfast at the beach watching the seagulls following a fishing boat. lunch can be enjoyed at a downtown café listening to the sounds of the metropolis. For dinner, you can probably find a restaurant true to your taste, from whichever part of the world you are. and at night you may choose to throw yourself into a throbbing nightlife or sit around a bonfire with your friends in the woods overlooking the city. oslo is big enough for all this to happen, but still small enough for you to do it all in a day!

SCANDINAVIAN MANAGEMENT VALUES Intercultural management: a norwegIan/ScandInavIan PerSPectIve In today’s global world, an understanding of what happens when people from different cultures meet and work together is quintessential for managers and leaders. we focus on the meeting of Scandinavian/ norwegian cultures with other cultures in the international business arena. this context will provide the backdrop for understanding and applying the research on culture, communication and management. we will examine intercultural management in some specific global industries where norwegian firms have excelled. we will also investigate what happens when people from different cultures meet in the Scandinavian context where values of gender equality dominate and specific employment rules and rights must be applied. the course consists of 10 ectS credits and will be taught through lectures, cases, group work, guest lectures and company visits.

Program FeatureS • extensive exposure to norwegian services, soware and other industries through guest lectures and company visits • lectures on Intercultural management from a Scandinavian/ norwegian perspective by highly qualified BI faculty • classes on norwegian life and Society – arts, history, economy, women’s position, politics and more • Social and cultural activities – adding to an unforgettable summer experience

norwegIan lIFe and SocIety Parallel to BI’s summer program, students may choose to attend classes of the norwegian life and Society course that is organised in the framework of the International Summer School at the university of oslo. this course (twice a week) is an interesting complement to BI classes and will enable participants to dive into various aspects of norwegian society. the course is ‘non credit’. Students who attend all classes get a certificate of attendance.

STUDENT EXPERIENCES AMY RUBIN, 20 University of Florida, Florida, USA I could not have asked for a better experience with the BI Norwegian Business School's summer program in 2011. It was the single greatest thing I have ever done. It was a wonderful academic, social and overall life experience. The faculty and staff were so welcoming and helpful, which made the transition much easier. As a participant in this program, I was able to learn about the cultures of my peers, immerse myself in Norwegian/Scandinavian culture, make lasting friendships that will stand the tests of time and distance, and even go on a few adventures. As a psychology student with no business background, I was nervous about the curriculum, but Intercultural Management was one of the best classes I have ever taken. It was challenging but also rewarding, and it gave me an entirely new perspective on business. Overall, I had a blast, and it was the best summer of my life! By the end of the four weeks, I truly considered Norway my home and hope to return one day!

ROBERTO COUTINHO, 25 Politenico di Torino, Torino, Italy I really had a great time in Oslo! There was always something new to do and new people to meet. I loved having sunlight until midnight, so I was very happy in Norway during the summer. Moreover, Norway is a very nice country and the people are very friendly. I also met many students from all over the world who are now my friends. I won't ever forget the time I spent with them at the school and during the social activities. The program was very interesting for me – it was very international and professional. The lectures were very good too. I was so happy every morning to go to the school to learn new things. I really enjoyed doing the activities as a team with my friends from different countries. I learned so much from the international students, which I think is added value for the program.

SAMPSON HARTFIELD, 21 Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia BI Norwegian Business School had a remarkable feeling and design about it! Essentially the campus itself is a single building of about 10 stories high and the first time it’s like walking into a small city. Norwegians generally pride themselves on being quite clean and precise and the university’s presentation displays this as a characteristic. As a business school, it is gaining strength in the world of elite educational institutions, most probably known for its economics, management and entrepreneurial degrees. I made many friends whilst I was in Norway, many from other countries participating in the same program, however I also made many friends from Scandinavia and Norway in particular. The campus we lived in sheltered a number of other BI students so it was easy to meet them. I would suggest to future exchange students to not wholly and solely socialize with the other exchange delegates. To fully appreciate the culture one should break free from their comfort zone and don’t be afraid to get lost. The experience far outweighed my expectations. I would live there tomorrow! BOMIKAZI ZEKA, 21 Nelson Mandela Univesrsity, Cape Town, South Africa The summer school program hosted by BI was the first, on an international sphere, that I had ever attended and the excitement was difficult to contain. As a business management student in South Africa, attending lectures at BI was a different experience, but highly informative, as we learnt about the Scandinavian perspective on intercultural management. What was most appreciated was the hidden curricula of interacting with other students from all over the world. Being in Norway for those four weeks was the most enriching experience I have ever had. I also established relationships with many new people and made memories with new friends that I will cherish forever. The summer school program at BI surpassed all my expectations and I now know that if another opportunity such as this one were to present itself, I would undoubtedly do it again.
