Happy New Year! The board of The Wichita Kennel Club has decided to give an overview report of what has gone on at the earlier board meeting. The report will be printed in the following newsletter. The board meetings are open to every member and are held on the last Wednesday of each month. For those that cannot make a board meeting, this report will help keep members informed. Dr. A J Quinn will no longer be doing CERF clinics. We need to locate a new Doctor to do this at our Spring and Fall shows. I have been in contact with Kansas State University. If anyone has a suggestion for a possible replacement, please contact me. I wish each of your a safe and prosperous 2011! Treva

WKC Accounting Audit 

Thank you to WKC member (and HKC treasurer) Bev Benjes for conducting an audit of the WKC financial books on Tuesday, December 28th. The purpose of the audit was to (a) make sure of no theft of funds, (b) determine that acceptable records are being kept, and (c) suggest corrections or improvements. During the audit, it was noted that there are multiple signators on the bank accounts, the tax return was timely filed, bills were timely paid, insurance is in force, receipts for expenses were provided and documented, income deposited, bank account reconciled regularly and that real estate was correctly classified.

DEBBIE BUTT NAMED 2010 AKC BREEDER OF THE YEAR -Award Presented at AKC/Eukanuba National Championship –

Debbie Butt of Toms Brook, Virginia was honored with the 2010 AKC Breeder of the Year Award for her Sporting Fields Whippets at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010. The annual award honors those breeders who have dedicated their lives to improving the health, temperament and quality of purebred dogs. "Debbie has bred all-purpose Whippets for more than 30 years, and her name has become synonymous with great hounds that are beautiful, capable and healthy," said AKC Chairman of the Board Ron Menaker. "With this award, we recognize the years of dedication and work that she has invested into her breed and the sport of dogs and the example she sets for both new and more experienced breeders alike. We're also proud that Debbie, along with the other Breeder of the Year group honorees, is an AKC Breeder of Merit - part of a select group of AKC breeders that truly are the backbone of the sport and the foundation of our organization." Each year, one honoree is chosen from each of the seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, NonSporting, and Herding. From those seven, one Group winner is selected as "AKC Breeder of the Year" during the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, which was held this year in Long Beach, CA on December 4 and 5. The Breeder of the Year ceremony will be included in the show's telecast on ABC Network Television on Sunday, January 23, 2011. Check local listings for air times.

Treasurer’s Report for 2010 By Tom Chase Although there are a couple of bright spots, the year 2010 was not a good one financially for the Wichita Kennel Club. On the plus side, the amount owed on our building is now less than $12K, and we are scheduled to make the final payment in March of 2013, just over two years from now. Once we get to that point and no longer have a mortgage payment, we’ll have a lot more money to use for other purposes. We also made about $1,300 total on our spring microchip clinic. And thanks to Treva, we made about $1,700 by holding conformation classes throughout the year. On the down side, our income from our two major activities, the Sunflower and Wheatland Cluster shows, was down considerably this year. We made just over $10,000 on the Spring show, which sounds pretty good until you learn that we made over $15,000 on the Spring 2009 show. We certainly hope that we don’t have a repeat of the circumstances that led to the big drop (competing show in Colorado, “lost premium lists”, etc.). Our fall show in Salina showed a similar distressing drop in income for WKC. In 2009, we made about $1,500 on the fall show but lost about $1,700 on this year’s show, mostly due to reduced entries and fewer vendor booths. We’ll need to turn the Fall show around quickly, if it is to continue. In all, the Wichita Kennel Club lost about $3,500 for the year, not a catastrophic year, but not a good one, either. In the next few months, we’ll need to take a look at ways that we can cut expenses in 2011, both for the Cluster shows and for day-to-day activities. And, of course, if anyone has ideas on fundraising activities that we could do, please don’t keep them to yourself.
