Title: Eyes on the Bay Completed by: Tiffany Neely Time of Completion May 2014 Abstract: “Eyes on the Bay” is the collection of short video pieces covering diverse news topics occurring throughout the bay area meant for broadcast in the local television news medium and format. In this collection I took on the positions on reporter, photographer, editor, and producer. This project was meant to produce work that exemplified my skills as a Multi-Media Journalist, or one-man-band reporter. “Diversity in Tech” is the first piece centered in Oakland, CA covering a new program that teaches low opportunity youth to code. CNN correspondent and former Obama aid, Van Jones, is the founder. “Art Migration to Vallejo” is the second piece. The story covers how artists are moving out of popular cities like San Francisco and Oakland due to the high cost of living, and they’ve created their own space in the small town of Vallejo. “Deportation March” covers the march in Oakland celebrating international worker’s day. It focuses on the issue of deportations in the U.S., and it’s influence on the community and economy. “Stanford Volunteers” follows a group of Stanford Law students as the volunteer at a community garden in Palo Alto that gives its produce to low income and homeless families. !

“There’s genius in // West Oakland, and East Oakland, and up in Richmond. And the one thing the country, and if you’re gonna be in a information age and technology age, the one thing you can’t afford to do is waste genius.” TONIGHT CNN CROSSFIRE HOST AND ONE TIME OBAMA AID,VAN JONES TALKED ABOUT HIS NEWEST PROGRAM YES WE CODE. A PROGRAM THAT AIMS TO FIX THE ISSUE OF LOW DIVERSITY IN SILICON VALLEY “And part of fixing it is these hackathons that introduce young people to the fact that they can code, they can create their own ideas and they can get them going and that’s what we’re doing here.

PAVING THE WAY DOES COME WITH CHALLENGES. “Moves like these could dislocated artists from the core of metropolitan areas unless it’s a mass migration, that means less support for the artists. And when they do get together they’re talking about their living situations instead of their art”. BUT THE COMMUNITY HERE TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY “When your part of a new community you have more of an ability to create an image an expression than being part of a greater community.” AND VALLEJO’S REPUTATION IS CHANGING “It use to be all you hear about in the paper were shootings or prostitution, or crime and it’s already changing the stories in the paper because we’re creating events, family events, people are coming out on the streets again, and its safe
