PRINCIPAL’S REPORT MRS KAREN WADE Welcome Back I hope everyone had a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday. I look forward to joining with students, teachers and parents for another exciting and productive year of teaching and learning at Bentleigh Secondary College. I am pleased to report that the college continues to build upon our successes. Our enrolments in 2014 have continued to increase. Our 2013 VCE results were excellent with our College Dux William Gao receiving an ATAR score of 97.3. The school year has begun on an extremely positive note. A very warm welcome to all the new students and their families. You are embarking on a wonderful learning journey which will be enhanced by always trying your personal best. You are joining a wonderful college with exceptional teachers who will support you to achieve your best. Bentleigh Secondary College provides a learning community where we all respect and care for each other, always working cooperatively as a team. In addition, our college provides you with magnificent facilities and resources which are yours to use to maximise your learning opportunities. Please don’t be afraid to ask questions. Staff, students and parents are eager to help you make a successful transition into our college. 20 and 30 Year Awards We have great teachers and support staff here at the college who are extremely dedicated and caring. Communication is Vital Bentleigh Secondary College has a commitment to provide all the care and support necessary for each student to do their best and achieve the highest possible learning outcomes. It is important that when families have concerns about their children they contact the relevant staff members immediately to ensure a quick supportive response. I encourage families to maintain open communication with staff members to ensure each student is provided with optimal support. The most appropriate staff members to talk to when you have specific concerns are the classroom teachers, then Assistant/Head of Year Levels, then Head of Junior or Senior School prior to contacting one of the Assistant Principals. These are the staff members who have a thorough understanding of the needs of the students in their care: Head of Year Level Assistants Year 7 Mrs Sue Blackmore Mr Jeff McConchie Year 8 Mrs Natalie Cumming Miss Kylie Hogg Year 9 Mr Chris Christofidis Mrs Dora Lakoumentas Year 10 Ms Claire Keep Miss Tana Kovac Year 11 Mr John Karydis Mr Luke Brookman Year 12 Miss Kylie Read Mr Robbie McLauchlan Head of Junior School - Mrs Amy Ogdin Head of Senior School - Mr Shaun Doherty Leadership Across Our Learning Community At our whole school assembly last week I spoke about leadership across our learning community. One of our 2013 College Captains Daniel Itsines spoke to the students about the strategies he used in Year Twelve to attain an ATAR score of 95.6. I have included Daniel’s speech over the page.

‘BEING THE BEST YOU CAN BE’

“Good morning everyone, and a big good morning to all the year 12s sitting up on the stairs there, very eager I’m sure to get started on the year ahead. And while I’d love to be able to stand here and tell you everything you need to know to make this year a breeze, just simply, I can’t. All I can tell you is that the ATAR score you receive at the end of the year will be directly proportional to the amount of work you put in all year, and that starts today. For me, my score was 95.60, and while it blew my socks off, it also got me into my choice course, Science at Melbourne. Waking up early that morning and finding out made all the hard work I put in worth it, and I hope that every single year 12 this year can wake up on your morning at the end of the year and receive the same extremely pleasing surprise. But in order to do that, there are a couple of things you’re going to have to tick off along the way. Hard work and dedication is the first one. It’s those people who put in that extra hour every night, who may wake up early in the mornings, who manage to collectively throughout the year squeeze those few sessions out that truly succeed and reach their goals. The second is Organization. That pesky little diary everyone has at some stage used to hone their graffiti skills on will become your best friend this year. With so much going on, I found it so comforting knowing that I had recorded everything I needed to do in my diary, and just being able to tick things off as I went. And it’s certainly one less thing to worry about rather than thinking – “did we have English homework”? And that gets me onto another topic. Just because your teacher may not have set you specific homework for the night/weekend, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing anything. Instead, you should use that opportunity to get ahead with your work, whether that be working on your summary book, reading ahead, doing some early exam revision, practice questions, whatever suits you. And that’s another crucial point to keep in mind as you venture forth this year – the study you do needs to be compatible with how you learn, and what you feel works for you. You could slave away on a comprehensive summary book all year but it may be worthless if that type of learning doesn’t suit you. Personally, I never really found summary books incredibly helpful. Instead, for me it was reading ahead and getting practice at specific questions that I knew would be important come exams that really felt like it worked. And as much as you need to be spending most of your time studying, you also need to be sleeping, and sleeping is awesome so why not do it. No use pulling an all-nighter cramming when you can barely keep your eyes open the next day. And for all other year levels, don’t think these messages don’t apply to you as well. It’s never too early to begin getting into good habits. And it begins with what I’m sure 95% of all of you were doing yesterday, finishing off the homework that you hadn’t touched since it was handed out at the end of last year. I’m guessing there would have been approximately 5% of students who did finish the homework early on and were able to spend the last few days of the break relaxing and well done to you. And while it may seem comical now, when you get to year 12 and your exams are starting next week, you don’t want to have left it all to the last minute and go in unprepared when you had the whole year for it. Maximize your time early on and reap the benefits later. One last thing for you year 12s. As much as this year is a competition of you against the rest of the state, it’s also a competition of you against yourself. If you can beat down the impulsive side of you that only wants to play games and not do any work, and put your all in for one year of hard work – it will truly pay off come results day, and then you will be able to smile, look back on all the hard work you put in and be grateful that you did it. I wish you all the best for the year ahead. Thank you.”

Student Representative Council This semester I have the privilege of working with the Student Representative Council whilst Ms Baxter is on leave. Last Wednesday 5 February our 2014 SRC met for a leadership planning day. I along with our four college Captains - Sophie, Peter, Noa and Lachlan ran sessions on the following topics: Why have an SRC?, What makes an effective SRC?, 2013 SRC Achievements, Structuring a Team Environment, Team Behaviours, Distributing Leadership, Role Delegation, Effective Meetings, SRC Planning, Mission Statement and Evaluation. The new team also played ‘getting to know you’ games and we spoke about supporting our Soweto Program for 2014. Congratulations to the following students who were successfully elected to the 2014 Student Representative Council: Year 7 Luke Chittenden, Khy Rasmussen, Harnanak Singh Sanlee Vom-McInnes Year 8 Michelle Antcliff, Lexi Dann, Jack Larkin, Aiden Sutton Year 9 Junior Captains - Bowan Hafey, Rachel Pedersen Deputy Captains - Brayden Berchy, Sarah Radlow Year 10 Maddy Boustead, Savannah Coates, Emily Nelson, Madi O’Connor Year 11 Emily Marshall, Amity Flower, Almendra Morales, Fontinie Zacharis Year 12 Captains - Sophie Iliadis, Peter Petropoulos Deputy Captains - Lachlan O’Brien, Noa Shaul It is wonderful to see such talented leaders giving our student body a voice.

Student Pass - Public Transport Victoria

The Victorian Student Pass provides travel for students on all metropolitan trains, trams and buses, all regional bus services and all V/Line train and coach services operating wholly within Victoria. The Student Pass is issued on a myki. All students aged 17 years and over, or those requiring a half yearly or yearly Student Pass (regardless of age), are required to obtain a 2014 Victorian Public Transport (VPT) Student Concession Card as proof of their concession entitlement. Application details are available from:  metropolitan premium train stations  PTV Hubs (Southern Cross Station and 750 Collins St, Docklands)  V/Line staffed stations and ticket agents  PTV Call Centre by calling 1800 800 007 (6.00am-midnight daily) or online at ptv.vic.gov.au Students wishing to purchase a Half Yearly ($261) or Yearly ($501) Victorian Student Pass will be required to obtain a 2014 VPT Student Concession Card, regardless of age, as proof of their concession entitlement. The standard $9 fee applies, and is available from the above mentioned places. The Yearly or Half yearly Victorian Student Pass will be loaded to the student’s existing myki card, or a new myki card if the student does not have one with the myki card fee waived. Registration is optional for students that hold a student pass, but it is however strongly recommended in case of loss or theft of the card, option of auto top up for ‘set and forget’ convenience and option to manage myki with an online account. There is no way for a student to recover the value held on the card in the event of the card being lost or stolen. Students are of course legally required to touch on with their myki cards every time they travel, even if they

have a valid student pass. Students who have a student pass, or who are over 16 years old, must also carry their concession card at all times when travelling. Without their concession card their student pass is not valid whether they have touched on or not.

Year 7 Music Recruitment Night On Monday February 3 we held our Year 7 Recruitment Night in the Performing Arts Centre. It was fantastic to see many of our new students and parents/guardians there learning more about the great opportunities on offer including a large array of musical instruments to choose from. To hear some of our experienced older students and talented staff demonstrating and teaching the Year 7 students, and in some cases, parents, how to play that particular instrument was wonderful. I strongly encourage all students across the college to be involved in this successful program as it offers great opportunities to students to enhance their time at school and overall approach to learning. Congratulations to Mr Andrew Albanis, the Head of Music, on organising and running such a wonderful night, and to all of the music staff and students who helped make the night a great success. College Photographs – Monday February 10 Photography day is Monday February 10. All students have received a photograph envelope which must be returned with full payment on the day of the photos. Please read the instructions on the envelope carefully. Students must be in full uniform, with correct shoes, to have their photograph taken. Photographs are processed on a prepaid basis, and the envelope has to be returned with the correct payment, either cash or a cheque, made out to “Southern Cross MSP”. The college Finance Office cannot take payment for photographs, nor can we give change. Bringing Personal Goods to School We have again been asked by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) to remind students, parents and staff that schools and DEECD do not hold insurance for personal property bought to school. There is no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to property such as mobile phones, calculators, sporting goods etc. Families will need to organise private insurance to cover the loss or damage of any private property brought to school. If students are bringing large sums of money to school for payment, these payments should be made before school from 8:30am. Student Accident Insurance The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including transport costs. Student accident insurance policies are available from private insurance companies. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT MR MARC KOENIG The start of each school year is often filled with anticipation, enthusiasm and anxiety and as the new Assistant Principal at Bentleigh Secondary College I am excited about the new challenge before me.

My early goal for this year at Bentleigh Secondary College is to build relationships with staff, students, their parents and the community. As a professional educator, I am interested in all educational issues, various teaching and learning approaches, the welfare of students and promoting a harmonious, safe and stimulating environment. Helping students develop a strategy to achieve their potential is a priority. I am thrilled to be Assistant Principal at a school which has high standards expected of its staff and students. The school has a growing reputation for its quality teaching and learning methods which are the foundations for success in any school setting. I’m looking forward to meeting students, parents and the community as the year progresses. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Attendance Approved absences should be for genuine illness or serious family issues. Parents need to say no to non-genuine reasons for staying at home. This includes not participating in whole school house sports days. Where there is a genuine reason for absence the following should take place: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

6.

Parent note excusing the absence presented by the student to the Year Level Head on the day of their return to school; The Year Level Head will sign the students green card at the back of their student organiser; The student then presents the signed green card to the teachers whose classes were missed; The classroom teachers will then adjust their roles to reflect an excused absence; If the green card is not presented within 5 days of the absence, the absence is recorded as unexcused. This cannot be changed without the authorization of the Year Level Head. An N result for the unit will result when more than 7 unexcused absences or 15 absences in total (both excused and unexcused) are accrued in a unit.

School Zone Speed Limits With the exception of weekends and public holidays, speed limits will apply on all school days. There are several types of school speed limit zones, so watch out for the signs near schools, slow down and obey the rules.

Student Leadership The college received a record number of applications for student leadership positions in 2014. CAREER NEWS Ms Kirstin Conway - Careers/Pathways Coordinator Tax File Numbers As a new academic year begins, students and parents are reminded that our school is involved with the ATO Schools Tax File Education Program. The main aim of this program is to provide the students with an efficient and convenient service for them to apply for their tax file numbers. The Tax File Number Program is available to all students from years 9 to 12. Why apply for a tax file number whilst at school? Any student will need a tax file number if he/she starts work (parttime and full-time) and all students planning on a tertiary education require one when they start. Importantly, current Year 12 students are reminded that they cannot enrol in a CSP (Commonwealth Support Place) course at university without a Tax File Number, so it is worthwhile getting an application submitted early! Forms can be obtained from Mr Howard or Ms Conway in the Careers Office, VCE Centre. Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test - UMAT 2014 Year 12 students are to please note that applications to sit the UMAT are now open and registrations close on Friday 6 June 2014 at 5.00pm sharp! Year 11 students may not sit the UMAT2014 and should they do so, their results will be cancelled and they may not be allowed to sit the UMAT again. Students sitting the UMAT should note that candidates who do not possess a current passport, driver’s licence or learner’s permit are strongly recommended to apply for a Keypass or Proof of Age Card as soon as possible as no other forms of ID will be accepted. Term 1 Working Bee The Term 1 Working Bee is to be held on Sunday 2 March and provides our school community with optimum conditions for tree planting. Parent, student and teacher involvement in working bees has not only created a very strong community spirit at Bentleigh SC, but has led to the establishment of an urban forest, Year 7 harvest garden, VCE garden, Japanese garden and Wetland precinct. The numerous awards we have received are a direct attribute to the work you have done in working bees.

On a very hot Sunday February 2 the annual Gay Pride March took place in St Kilda. The Safe Schools Coalition was marching and invited students to participate with them. Students from Bentleigh Secondary College proudly marched carrying our school banner. Mrs Suzy Watt and I watched from the sidelines and heard many people commenting on how impressed they were in seeing school students taking a stand – Certainly Ms Watt and I were incredibly proud – Well Done!
