Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus by Jonathan Zellar, Director, Youth Ministries

“Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.” –Acts 13:3 How often do you think about your hands? Yep, those things at the ends of your arms with the fingers on them. I bet the only time you really think about your hands is when they aren’t working right. You might have pain in your fingers, or you broke your hand when you fell. Maybe arthritis is setting in and that causes your hands to be stiff and painful, not letting you get things done you wished you could. As I did my personal devotion this morning, one of the verses mentioned hands and it got me thinking. What are some of the amazing things you can do with your hands? Well, first of all I can type this jumble of words in case anyone needs to kill some time and hear about Jesus. Some other things that you can do with your hands are write, lift, grab, shake, pray, praise, twist, work, design, and drink your coffee! Hands are pretty amazing things if you really start thinking about it. There are many words that describe what we can do with our hands like handy, handcraft, handshake, and handpick. I started thinking about the many things that Jesus did with His hands. He prayed, blessed, healed, and taught along with many other things. He used His hands to help others in their time of need and faithlessness. The cool thing is that we can do the same thing, because we are the hands (and feet…) of Jesus! We get to use our hands and abilities to show others the love Christ has for them.

So what does that look like for you? How do you get to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others? Is it through your job? Your friendships? Your smile to the crabby checkout person at the store? Being the hands and feet of Jesus doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use your hands to show people who Jesus is, but sometimes it will involve it. I can think of many friends and people who are wonderful examples of Christ to others and do very demanding jobs with their hands. Plumbers, fire system inspectors, child care workers, engineers, etc. Hands can come in pretty hand…y. What makes us able to do all of these things and be the hands and feet of Jesus? It’s because Jesus used His hands and feet to show us what real love looked like. He prayed, blessed, and healed, but He also carried a cross, and took nails in those hands and feet to pay for all of the times that we are a handful. He handpicked and handcrafted every person and cared about them enough to willingly take on all of our sins so we can be examples to others of that love and forgiveness that He shares with us. So, next time you are using your hands, remember the important role that Jesus’ hands played in your redemption story. Question for the day: How will your hands show Jesus’ love to someone else today?

Ministry Action Teams – It’s Easy to Find One to Serve On! Last year, our vote to change our governance meant we would no longer have the six boards that we had grown accustomed to. But the work of the boards had to continue; as a result, we needed to reassign the activities formerly coordinated by the six boards into various Ministry Action Teams (MATs). To a large degree, the people who had been serving in a particular area on a board simply continued to do the same type of work, just now under the label of a MAT and working directly under one of the Director-level staff. There was a bit of socialization that occurred during board meetings that has been missed by some. But on the positive side, the new structure has given volunteers more time to do the work they love to do by eliminating board meetings, and has provided the flexibility for more people to get involved who may have been limited before by the requirement of attending board meetings one Tuesday evening per month. In the January issue, I talked about the success of the MATs to coordinate large, seasonal events such as the Trinity First Thanksgiving Meal and Children’s Ministry. Last month, I discussed how the Church Council had launched a few short-term MATs to gather input that will be used to formulate the 3-year strategy, which was also an illustration of how our new governance allows for the nimble creation and dissolution of teams to get things done quickly. Some MATs are seasonal or short-term. But the work of MATs is actually much broader than these types of examples—many of them are ongoing and need year-round support from volunteers. This month I am providing a list of the many MATs that have been identified by our staff to keep Cross View’s ministry strong and vibrant. Some are already fully-resourced, but many have room for additional help! Please glance through it and see what interests you. Each MAT is overseen by a Director-level staff person or by the Sr. Pastor, so please contact one of them; they will be able to guide you to the appropriate person so you can discuss how you could contribute your God-given time and talent to our congregation! In service to Him, Gregg Poppe Congregational President

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Regular Programming Wraps Up in May; Summer Includes VBS, Music Camp, Education ADULT BIBLE STUDIES CONTINUE

During the month of May, Adult Bible studies continue on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Even if you have missed a session or two, please feel free to join in. Classes include: Christian Concerns in American Foreign Policy Led by Pastor Bob Schmidt, each week’s class will look at different aspects of American foreign policy and ways that Christians may respond. Returning from Nigeria, soon to be embroiled in a civil war, Pastor Schmidt studied Political Science to better understand African civil wars. He received a Ph. D majoring in International Relations and has sought to apply a Christian perspective to American foreign policy. The class meets in the Fellowship Hall. You’ll Get Through This: Hope and Help for Your Turbulent Times This video based study by Max Lucado offers refreshing assurance for anyone in the midst of turbulent times. Max reminds us through the account of Joseph, that God doesn’t promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless, but that He will be there for us always. This class meets in Classroom 218, facilitated by Phil Johnson.

MAY 17 - LAST SUNDAY OF ‘REGULAR’ PROGRAMMING

While we don’t take a vacation from worship and education in the summer, it does take on a different look. Our last Sunday of regular education classes will be May 17. Take this opportunity to say thank you to teachers and those who have volunteered throughout the year. They are a blessing! Also, note that there will be no education classes on May 24 (Memorial Day Weekend).

SUMMER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES BEGIN MAY 31

Sunday School has a different look during the summer months. Students join together for fun while learning of God’s love and gifts to us. All children age 3 through entering 6th grade are invited to join us in the Fellowship Hall each week at 9:30 A.M. Our themes for this summer are:

OUTREACH AND MISSIONS

VEAP Food Shelf Collection Update, Letters from Missionaries

VEAP FOOD SHELF COLLECTION

For the spring food shelf drive, Cross View gave $435 and 298 pounds of food. This support has been put to work right away to help low-income individuals and families put food on the table and remain stable in their housing. VEAP believes that when individuals

and families are stable, our community is stronger. On behalf of all the people VEAP serves, thank you for your partnership in this mission through drives, financial gifts and prayer. Together we are making a difference in the lives of neighbors in our community.

Dear friends at Cross View Lutheran Church, Easter greetings to you in the name of our Risen Savior, Jesus! First and foremost, we thank you heartily for your generous $750.00 gift received on 02/19/2015. Your gift and your prayers encourage us greatly. I just love this time of year! In Alaska we call it “break – up”. This is when our temperatures begin to stay above freezing long enough to soften the layers of snow in the yard. The highways are clear. The driveways and side roads (read

that as layers of packed snow that we have been driving on all winter) are a slushy mess on warm days and a frozen bumpy sheet of ice every night. A small river of water appears again on the layers of ice that cover the mighty Copper River. Working outside in only a sweatshirt is a joy as the subzero military boots go in the closet and the mud boots reappear. And best of all, at this time of year comes Easter and our celebration of the resurrection of Jesus! During lent, Mt. Drum Lutheran Church in Copper Center, Alaska shared the Passion Story of Jesus in both the Copper Center community and in the village of Chitina. Carry Your Cross was an event inviting people to move table to table and hear the passion story as they created a personalized cross. Bark was scraped off; wood was sanded; crosses were tied; nails were imbedded; and crowns of thorns were weaved. Most importantly, great teaching moments occurred. Todd spent March 9-31 in China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. He shared God’s Word with Hmong Minority Chinese at a Bible School and in several churches in southern China. His faith is always encouraged as he encounters people who have survived the Cultural Revolution and years of persecution for their faith. In the Philippines, he was the sole trainer for the Pastoral Training Seminars and busy transitioning the Agricultural Program to new leadership. Our fellow missionary, Agriculturalist Dr. Mike Wade, is no longer able to visit the Tagakaulo area because of health issues and the program supervisor, Rev. Antonio Reyes, resigned when he was elected president of the Lutheran Church in the Philippines. Todd is eager to be back home in Alaska for Holy Week and Easter celebrations. We are eagerly anticipating Easter next week! As we gather on the banks of the Copper River for our outdoor sunrise service, we are planning on trumpet and guitar accompaniment for our music this year. No subzero temperatures are anticipated. Easter breakfast, coloring Easter Eggs, Celebration Indoor Worship, a Potluck Easter Lunch, and an Easter Egg Hunt are all being planned in Copper Center. More Easter celebrations will occur April 12th in Chitina. Blessed Easter! The Risen Jesus is with you. Todd and Kim Roeske, Audrie, Kalae, Karis, and Amani

Dear Cross View friends and family, Thank you for supporting my mission trip to Tenwek hospital in Kenya. I arrived with no troubles and began seeing patients in the dental clinic the following day. God allowed me the opportunity to provide physical healing for many people, yet the enjoyment I received witnessing to many patients was uplifting. I am so grateful for our freedom to worship at Cross View and with my many Christian friends abroad. The missionary families and I celebrated a lovely Good Friday service in the hospital chapel. My family wishes to thank you again for the blessings you have given to us. My future plans are to return to Tenwek in October to continue the Lord’s work and champion the building of a new eye and dental clinic. Blessings, Tim Clavin, D.D.S.

Meet The Spiritual Care Team

Church Council Nominees

In this and future Clarions¸ you will have the opportunity to get to know the people serving on the Spiritual Care Ministry Action Team, led by Pastor Steve Wheeler.

On March 28, 2015, the Cross View Nominating Committee met to nominate members for two open seats on the Cross View Church Council. Prior to the meeting, a notice was included in the church bulletin for three weeks and was also placed in the March Clarion. The two open positions are currently held by Lynn Pahl and Barb Martenson. Both Lynn and Barb indicated that they would be willing to serve another term if that was the desire of the Nominating Committee and the congregation. During the meeting, the members thoughtfully considered the make-up of the Church Council including the demographics and strengths of the current Church Council. The group also considered the fact that the Church Council has only been operating since October 2014. The terms of the existing members were also considered. Nominating Committee carefully reviewed the list of names brought forth by the congregation and believed that Cross View was indeed blessed to have such gifted members who are willing to serve the Lord. After a thorough discussion, the committee came to the agreement that it would be in the best interest of the church to have Lynn and Barb continue on the Church Council. Both Lynn and Barb have been contacted and have agreed to serve if that is the wish of the congregation. Their bios are listed below. The election of the new Church Council members will be part of the May 31st Voters’ Assembly meeting.

Sarah Fincham I moved to Minnesota in August, 2010, with my husband Mark, who is originally from Edina. A Colorado native, I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with my Bachelor of Music Education. I spent 7 years in the elementary music classroom, and through that time, deepened my passion for children’s and music ministry. I am currently working in the home full-time with our only daughter Rylee, who will be one in May. Throughout our four years at Cross View, I’ve been involved in several aspects of the church. We typically attend the later service, and my husband and I both enjoy serving with the praise band. I have had the pleasure of leading music for VBS and organizing the annual summer music camp for several years. You will see me in both of those roles this upcoming summer, as well. We have a wonderful small group who has connected us more deeply to Cross View. We participate in YAMS and look forward to diving deeper into the children’s ministry as Rylee grows. It is a privilege to serve on the Spiritual Ministry team. Reaching past the surface and truly knowing your brothers and sisters in Christ is something that is important to me, and I look forward to making that happen. The Cross View community has been such a blessing to our family, and I am honored to serve in a way that works to build relationships and support amongst its members. Vern Hanson My wife Sue and I have been Cross View members since 2005 when we moved here from Sacramento after living there for 27 years. We felt “right at home” when we started attending Cross View; we especially enjoyed and appreciated the warmth and friendliness of the many Cross View members who welcomed us into the congregation. We can usually be found at the second service, as we especially enjoy the wonderful praise band we are blessed to have at Cross View. We moved here so that I could accept a management position with Thrivent Financial, a position I enjoyed for two years, but in 2007 decided a career change was in order. I returned to school, and I am now a Family Nurse Practitioner for Park Nicollet in a family practice clinic. I really enjoy the ministry I can provide through my work which is really just an extension of the ministry provided through Cross View. There are so many people whose lives would be changed if they really knew how much they were loved and cared about. I was recently asked to join the Spiritual Care Ministry team several months ago; I am privileged and blessed to now be a part of that team and to work with members of the congregation supporting their spiritual care. This ministry allows me to reach out and support members of the congregation and to be a “liaison” between the congregation and the spiritual needs of individual members. I hope to be able to meet you and put a name with a face in the coming months. If you see me at church, please stop and introduce yourself.

Barb Martenson – Nominee for At-large Member (2015 – 2017) Barb Martenson and her husband, Jim, have been members of Cross View since 1989. In the 26 years of membership, Barb has served Cross View in a variety of roles. Most recently, she has served a 1 year term (since October 1) on the Church Council. Barb has also served as New Members Coordinator, Deaconess, Treasurer of ECC, Chair of Junior Youth Ministry, teacher, and she has served on two Call Committees. She has also been active in small group ministry. Barb recently retired as an Administrator of a law firm and Director of Administration for the Minnesota Beer Wholesalers Association. Barb and Jim live in Brooklyn Park, and have two children, Kendra (Langmade) and Zachary. Lynn Pahl – Nominee for At-large Member (2015 – 2017) Lynn Pahl, her husband Tom and their three boys, Sam, Will and Danny have been members since 2001. While at Cross View, Lynn has served this past year on the Church Council, taught Sunday School, attended adult Bible study, supported two confirmands (Sam and Will), served on the Board of Youth for two terms and the strategic committee that developed our current mission statement, and participated on two Call Committees for Youth Director. Lynn held executive roles in customer service and finance at Life Time Fitness and Northwest Airlines over the past 22 years. She recently joined UnitedHealth Group as Vice President of Corporate Services. The Pahls live in Eden Prairie.

JOIN CROSS VIEW WOMEN IN LWML EVENTS

I love to have fun. LWML doesn’t always sound like a blast. However, I need a closer relationship with the Lord. The information in this organization is endless, and the opportunity to learn and serve goes on and on. It brings up things I don’t always think about. A few women from Cross View recently attended the LWML Spring Rally at Redemption Lutheran Church. We had fun! We learned and became charged up in our walk with Christ. Please join us for future events, as well as participate in the monthly mite box collection for LWML projects. Joannie Reeves, LWML Coordinator

CROSS VIEW YOUTH

Art from CAF Gifted to Cross View

Easter Breakfast Success & Bible Studies It’s safe to say that this year’s Easter breakfast was a success! The youth and their families served 163 plates of food and raised almost $700 in support of our trip to the 2016 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. A big thank you goes out to all those that donated their time and energy into providing delicious egg bakes and other services.

The senior high youth continue to discuss The Creation Debate by Bill Nye and Ken Ham on Sunday mornings. As summer nears, we conclude our study on the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and we welcome the 8th grade class of confirmands into the senior high program.

CROSSWAYS INTERNATIONAL CALLING

CI Reaches Cambodia, Haiti, Thailand, Vietnam, More From time to time, I have mentioned that American Rehabilitation Ministries (ARM), which is based in Joplin, Missouri, has used CI materials, in particular See Through the Scriptures ® (STS). The President of ARM, the Rev. Joe Garman, has taught STS to many thousands of prisoners in about 150 correctional facilities across the nation. This month, I am highlighting Rapha House, the ministry that the Rev. Garman’s daughter, Stephanie Freed, co-founded with her father and now manages. Rapha House carries out its ministry in Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Haiti. Its mission is to rescue young girls who are forced into prostitution in those nations, and to love and heal them. They equip those whom they have rescued to find meaning in life and to do meaningful work to support themselves. The reports that Chloris and I receive from these dedicated workers are most moving. For more information, visit www.raphahouse.org and go to About Us:

Our Organization, Values, and Mission. As I mentioned in the previous issue of the Clarion, my colleague, the Rev. Neville Mirtschin, recently spent two months equipping pastors and church workers in Vietnam and the Philippines to understand and teach See Through the Scriptures. In Manila, Neville conducted a seminar for 35 police officers who are seeking help to deal with the corruption that prevails in that densely populated nation—even within the police force. In Vietnam, although Neville spent two weeks under house arrest, he managed to conduct a number of training events in seven locations. Some of the testimonies that we have received from Vietnamese pastors who attended a seminar are very moving. You can find out more in an upcoming issue of the monthly electronic newsletter from CI at www.crossways.org. Three pieces of artwork from this year’s Christian Art Festival have been gifted to Cross View. We are delighted to have received two works of the ancient art of Scherenschnitt (scissor cuttings) which became popular in Europe around 1700. Gifted by member/artist Karin Schmidt, “Celebration” and “Reflection” are cut from a single sheet of black paper and mounted on a white background. Karin learned this art form as a child in her native Germany. Through the financial gifts of Cross View members, we also purchased “Whoever Drinks What I Give Shall Not Thirst”, acrylic on gessobord by artist Robyn Sand Anderson. Thank you to all who contributed to these additions to Cross View’s visual art collection.

Potluck/Game Night

Cross View Cards & Games Friday May 8; 6:30 P.M. Come and celebrate the conclusion of the Cards & Games 2014/2015 season. This event will be held in the Fellowship Hall. After the meal you will have the opportunity to connect with Cross View members and friends (adults of all ages) for several hours of fun and fellowship by playing cards and games of your choice. New participants are welcome! Sign up at the Connection Center. Questions? Contact: Marlys Meintsma 952-9381001, Mel Davis 952-925-4064, or Carla Schumacher 952-949-9349.

Quarterly Treasurer’s Report

The ministries of our church are growing! Thanks be to God that Cross View’s impact on its members, the community around us, and ministries that are far-reaching continue to expand! This growth cannot occur without the generosity and giving of our congregation and the prudent use of the resources that have been entrusted to these ministries. The 1st quarter financial results as shown below are largely keeping Cross View on track for the year. While total receipts (which is predominantly comprised of membership giving) in the 1st quarter are below budget by approximately $20,000, expenses for the year have been well managed and are also tracking below budget, by approx. $17,000. As a result, from a financial perspective Cross View has had a good start to the year. Also, I am pleased to report that Cross View’s largest ministry,

On Sunday, April 26, Cross View highlighted Lutheran education. Representatives from 8 different schools came to share about their ministry, and students from St. Paul, Prior Lake shared their talents singing with our praise team during the 10:45 service.

Cross View includes scholarship monies in the annual budget to assist students attending LCMS schools in the Twin Cities area. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Sarah Woodward or Christine Eid.
