RESPONSE

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. BLOCK PARTY is scheduled for JULY 20TH

Mother’s Day Mrs. Ann Reeves Jarvis, the honored mother, was the daughter of Rev. J. W. and Nancy Reeves, and was born September 30, 1832, In Culpepper, County Virginia. While her father was pastor of the Methodist Church in Philippi, Virginia (now West Virginia), she was united in marriage to Granville E. Jarvis. Soon therea-er they moved to Webster, a small village four miles west of Gra-on, and in 1865 they located in Gra-on, where Mr. Jarvis engaged in the mercan0le business. A-er the death of the father, December 31, 1902, the family moved to Philadelphia. It was there, three years later, that Mrs. Jarvis died, May 9, 1905. On the day of the funeral, at 3:30 p.m., the old bell of Andrews Methodist Church in Gra-on, WV was tolled seventy-two 0mes in honor of the “Mother of Mother’s Day.”

Miss Anna M. Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day was born at Webster, West Virginia, May 1, 1864, and was one of eleven children of whom only four lived to maturity. She received her early educa0on in Gra-on, WV, and a-er comple0ng the work of the graded schools, she enrolled in the Augusta Female Seminary, which is known today as the Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. A-er comple0ng her studies, she returned to Gra-on and employed by the Board of Educa0on as a teacher in the Public School, where she taught for a period of seven years.

“Mother’s day is in honor of the best Mother who ever lived - the Mother of your heart” —Anna Jarvis.

The origin of Mother’s Day dates back to post Civil War days when Mrs. Ann Reeves Jarvis, the honored mothered, in an effort to reunite the family 0es that had been broken during this period, organized the mothers of this community and announced a “Mother’s Friendship Day” to be held at Pruntytown then the county seat of Taylor County. A special invita0on was give to every Union and Confederate soldier and their family, and one of our historians recounts that it was an inspiring sight to see the men in gray and blue meet, shake hands, and to hear them say “God bless you neighbor; let us be friends again.” For more than twenty years, Mrs. Jarvis taught in the primary department of the Sunday School of Andrews Church, and during this 0me she o-en spoke of the appropriateness of a day to honor the mothers of our country, both the living and the memory of those at rest. It was this mother who inspired the daughter, Miss Anna M. Jarvis, to promote the idea of Mother’s Day. In 1907, two year a-er the passing of her mother, Miss Jarvis invited several of her friends to her home in Philadelphia to spend the second Sunday in May to commemorate the anniversary of her mother’s death. On this day she announced her plans for a na0onal observance of Mother’s Day, thereby puCng her thoughts into ac0on. On May 10, 1908, the first official Mother’s Day service was held in Andrews Methodist Church with an aFendance of 407 persons. From Philadelphia, Miss Jarvis sent 500 white carna0ons, chosen by her as an emblem of purity to the church. One carna0on was presented to each son and daughter, and two were given to each mother at morning services on Sunday, May 10, 1908 to honor mothers. Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker, who had joined her cause to establish Mother’s Day, held an a-ernoon service in his store the same day. The movement, a combina0on of religious and commercial interests, grew rapidly. The second Sunday of May was proclaimed as Mother’s Day, as a result of the first West Virginia State Proclama0on, issued on April 26, 1910, by West Virginia Governor William E. Glasscock and was officially approved on May 9, 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson that the second Sunday in May would be observed annually as Mother’s Day throughout the na0on. The church where it all began is now the Interna0onal Mother’s Day Shrine and is open to the public. The Church of the Good Shepherd holds a unique posi0on by having Andrews Methodist Church as one of our ‘mother’ churches. Today we celebrate Mother’s Day as it was done 105 years ago, honoring our mothers for their love, pa0ence and understanding throughout the years.
