Wie spät ist es? When Shingo came late to class, Herr Meier asked him Wie spät ist es? (What time is it?). When he realised that Shingo didn’t know how to say the time in German, he decided to teach the class about time. He gave the instruction Sagt das nach!.

Die Stunden (The hours) Listen to the time in whole hours on Track 15. Look at the clock faces from left to right. Try to work out the pattern for telling the time in whole hours.

Pause the audio. There are two other ways of saying ‘It’s twelve o’clock’:

Unit 5 Part 2

twelve noon

twelve midnight.

Es ist zwölf Uhr mittags.

Es ist Mitternacht.

Did you work out the pattern for telling the time when it is on the hour? To give the time when it is on the hour, say: Es ist ______________ Uhr. hour

Die Minuten (The minutes) Next, Herr Meier explained the time in Minuten (minutes). You will need to pause Track 16 several times as you read the following information.

Unit 5 Part 2

19

Half past In German, ‘half past’ is expressed ‘half of the next hour’. So, 10:30 is expressed ‘half of 11’. Listen to how 10:30 is said on Track 16.

Pause the audio. Use this pattern to say ‘half past’: Es ist halb ______________. the next hour

To the hour Listen to how 10:35 is said on Track 16 and work out the pattern for saying ‘to the hour’.

Pause the audio. Did you work out this pattern: Es ist ______________ vor ______________. minutes

20

hour

Beginn mit Deutsch
