Beaufort County Community College MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY Associate in Applied Science Degree A45420

The Medical Laboratory Technology curriculum prepares individuals to perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and immunohematology that may be used in the maintenance of health and diagnosis/treatment of disease. Course work emphasizes mathematical and scientific concepts related to specimen collection, laboratory testing and procedures, quality assurance, and reporting/recording and interpreting findings involving tissues, blood, and body fluids. Graduates may be eligible to take examinations given by the Board of Registry of Medical Technologists of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or the Certifying Agency. Employment opportunities include laboratories in hospitals, medical offices, industry, and research facilities. (Non-Core Classes) HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY or GENERAL COLLEGE CHEMISTRY with a grade of “C” or better within the past five years is an Admission Requirement for the MLT PROGRAM. There is no chemistry time limit for applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in an approved healthcare field or an AAS degree in an approved healthcare field. A Minimum Grade of “C” is Required on ALL curriculum courses in the MLT programs. This includes all MLT and non-MLT courses.

The Practical Nursing curriculum provides knowledge and skills to integrate safety and quality into nursing care to meet the needs of the holistic individual which impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. The LPN to ADN Transition program at BCCC offers students who have completed the Licensed Practical Nursing diploma the ability to utilize their education and work experience to finish the Associate Degree Nursing program in four semesters. To be considered for the program, students must have completed a regionally accredited Practical Nursing Program within two years of application date (official transcript required) or have verification of 12 months of employment within the past 2 years as a LPN functioning in a role requiring practical nursing skills. Each applicant will be evaluated and awarded points using the specified criteria that can be found on the Allied Health Admissions page. Those applicants with highest rank will be selected to continue in the admissions process. Space is contingent upon how many seats are available because that number fluctuates every year. Students accepted into the program are given credit for NUR 111 and complete ADN course sequencing with traditional the cohort. Admission to a nursing program is competitive and based upon the selection of those candidates who possess the ability to succeed in a demanding academic program. The number students accepted in the nursing programs cannot exceed the maximum number approved by the NC Board of Nursing and available clinical space. Each applicant will be evaluated and awarded points using the criteria below. Those applicants with highest rank will be selected to continue in the admissions process including a physical, immunization records, and CPR requirements. If two or more students have the same rank, GP will determine admission. Nursing application date will be the determining factor if rank and GPA are the same. Academic Performance (200 points) • Grade from first semester of Nursing – (A=200 points; B=150 points; C=100 points) GPA (200 points) • GPA from BIO 168, BIO 169, ENG 111, PSY 150 • Divide GPA by .02. Chemistry (100 points) – (A=100 points; B=90 points; C=80 points) Students in nursing programs must achieve a “C” or above in all curriculum courses. Fall 2017 Frequently Asked Questions When will letters go out?

Notification of top ranking and if you’re an alternate the first or second week in April for LPN and RN students and June for MLT students.

When will the application be available for Fall 2017? In September 2016.

How many applicants will be accepted into your LPN and RN programs? 60 available seats and 10 alternates for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. 30 available seats and 5 alternates for the Practical Nursing Program.

Do you have a wait list? No.

Can you tell me my points?

Did you meet with Ms. Bridgers? If so, your points will remain the same unless you have taken additional classes after the submission of your application and if they were completed before January 31st (for the RN and LPN program) and April 30th (for the MLT program).

When is the deadline to apply to the MLT program? April 30.

How many students are accepted into the MLT program? 16-18 available seats for the Medical Lab Technology Program.

Does anyone else have an MLT program?

ECU has a bachelors program. The Halifax Community College and Wayne Community College both have MLT programs well.

Associate Degree Nursing: High School or College Chemistry within 8 years C or above. Medial Laboratory Technology- High School or College Chemistry within 5 years C or above. **There is no time limit for applicants with a Bachelor’s degree or an AAS degree in an approved healthcare field.

Students take NCLEX for license for RN and LPN license. Do we require an entrance exam?

Yes, we require the TEAS test. We also administer the test on our campus. The cost is $66.00. You can find more information at https://www.atitesting.com/Home.aspx Not applicable for the MLT Program.

How are points calculated?

• Applications where TEAS scores are 58.7% or higher will be ranked with points within the points system. (Not applicable for MLT students.) • Quality points for applicable courses. • GPA for applicable courses. • Chemistry grade academic performance. (Not applicable for PN students.)

What is the RIBN Program?

Placement Test Scores:

Must meet the minim for the College. Applicants may test twice within the twelve-month period which runs between January 1st and December 31st. DMA 010-DMA 015 is required for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. MAT 110, 115, 143 must have been completed within 5 years of the date that the application is submitted for the LPN program.
