BEAR LAKE Bear Lake is often called the Caribbean of the Rockies for its intense turquoise blue water. As visitors catch their first glimpse of the lake, they marvel at its color and wonder what makes the lake so blue. The unique color is due to the reflection of the limestone deposits suspended in the lake. Each season lends its own characteristic to the lake. History The Bear Lake Valley was first inhabited by Shoshoni Tribes, then fur trappers. Between 1825 & 1840, many mountain men and Native Americans met on the south end of the lake to swap goods and stories! These meetings became known as rendezvous. The first permanent settler to the Bear Lake Valley was reportedly Thomas Pegleg Smith, a crusty, onelegged, ex-mountain man. During the 1840s, he set up a trading post to provide supplies to the emigrants on the famous Oregon Trail.
Early Mormon pioneer leader, Brigham Young, sent the first group of permanent settlers to Bear Lake Valley in 1863. This group was led by Charles C. Rich. The County bears his name. Bear Lake Facts Elevation:

SPRING, SUMMER & FALL ACTIVITIES Bear Lake has 70,000 acres of turquoise blue water. The lake is so large, you feel as if you have it all to yourselves. This resort area is known for excellent boating, sailing, waterskiing and wakeboarding. Numerous boat ramps are located around the lake, to make launching your boat a breeze. Utah State Park Marina has a 7-lane boat ramp. See the Bear Lake map for boat ramp locations. Watercraft and ATV rentals are available. www.bearlake.org
Boating Boating is popular on this large lake. The lake is 20 miles long and 8 miles wide, providing space and calm water for all types of watercraft.
Water-Skiing/ Wakeboarding
SUP Boarding, Kayaking, & Canoeing
Water-skiing and wakeboarding are favorite sports on the lake. You don’t have to worry about riding across the wake of another boat. Plenty of room and no crowds!
The shores around Bear Lake offer a great location for activities like Stand-Up Paddle boarding, kayaking, and canoeing. Not only is it great exercise but it allows you to enjoy the natural beauty of Bear Lake.
Swimming Swimming off sandy beaches is fun for the whole family. Be sure to bring a sun umbrella, a picnic lunch and beach toys!
Sailing Sailing has always been a popular sport on the lake. A gentle breeze generally rolls off the lake in the early afternoons. Glide on the lake and enjoy one of its spectacular sunsets.
Fishing Bear Lake is renowned as a trophy, cutthroat trout fishery where the Idaho State Record cutthroat of 19 lbs. was caught. Lake trout (Mackinaw) also inhabit the lake and can exceed 30 lbs. Trolling and jigging from boats can be done throughout the year (winter and spring months being the most
productive). Four species are unique to Bear Lake: the Bonneville cisco; the Bear Lake whitefish; the Bonneville whitefish; and the Bear Lake sculpin.
Golf You can golf three seasons of the year in the Bear Lake Valley: spring, summer and fall. Perfect temperatures make for perfect days of golf. The golf courses are located on scenic hillsides, with spectacular views of the lake. Courses have reasonable green fees and challenging holes.
SPRING, SUMMER & FALL ACTIVITIES
Backcountry Riding/ATV’s Hundreds of miles of trails connecting Idaho and Utah provide all levels of riding and the surrounding canyons make for a challenging ride with plenty of fresh air in an unreal setting.
Horseback Riding Trails in nearby canyons wind through the high mountain wilderness area. Just minutes from Bear Lake, you can be astride a horse and a million miles from home. As you ride through the picturesque canyon trails, enjoy nature and the wildlife of the Rocky Mountains.
Bird Watching/ Wildlife Viewing The Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge, on the north shore of Bear Lake, has over 18,050 acres of marsh, open water and grasslands dedicated to preserving bird and wildlife habitats. The refuge is home to Sandhill Cranes, herons, Snowy Egret, White Pelicans, Canada Geese and a variety of waterfowl. It has one of the largest White-faced Ibis production areas in the western U.S. Walking trails are found throughout. As you drive around the lake, don’t be surprised if you see deer in the early spring sampling the fresh green leaves and foliage. Perhaps you
may spot a moose knee-high in the turquoise water or see Trumpeter Swans and pelicans floating on the lake. Bring along your binoculars and see what you can spot!
Cave Exploring Minnetonka Cave is nine fascinating rooms of stalactites, stalagmites and banded travertine. Don’t miss one of the most striking stalactites, the Bride, known for its lacy appearance. Three stalagmites, over 10 feet high, have diameters of nearly four feet. Enjoy a 90-minute, half-mile walk into this beautiful cave. Be prepared for the 400 steps up and down and bring a jacket, since the cave is cool
(40°F year round). The road is paved to the mouth of the cave.
Camping & Picnicking Campgrounds are dotted around the lake offering a range of sites, from tent to full hook-up (many also have electricity, water and even showers). Picnic tables and restrooms are available at the state park beaches.
Pickleville Playhouse Since its first production in 1977, Pickleville has been known for its unforgettable brand of family fun and entertainment. Two shows are performed every season so make plans to see both!

The Bear Lake Scenic Bike Trail
Bloomington Lake Trail
As spring makes its way into Bear Lake, early leaves and flowers welcome you as you ride or walk a lake or mountain trail. Temperatures are mild, even during the middle of the summer, so hiking is pleasant. The fall months of September and October are some of the prettiest and most scenic with the brightly colored leaves and the tranquility of the lake. The canyons on the west side of Bear Lake offer challenging and fun trails through mountain wilderness.
A 4.2 mile paved trail from Utah Bear Lake State Park Marina to Ideal Beach.
Drive or hike via a rough, unpaved road. This small glacial lake is located in a spectacular setting of cliffs and waterfalls. During the summer, wildflower surround this clear mountain lake.

Garden City Park Walkway A raised wooden walkway to the lake located at the Garden City Park. Interpretive signs tell the story of the lake and surrounding area.
Limber Pine Trail A relaxing one mile loop to the 2,000 year old limber pine.
Highline Trail A 55-mile trail accessible from Bloomington Canyon, Paris Canyon, Emigration Canyon and Logan Canyon. Open to hiking, horseback riding, motor bikes and mountain bikes.
Paris Peak Trail The trailhead is located in Bloomington Canyon. This multiuse trail follows an old road bed, providing panoramic views of the surrounding hillsides.
Logan Canyon Trails Logan Canyon National Scenic Byway is home to several great mountain biking trails. Whether you are an advanced rider or want to take the family for an enjoyable ride, you’ll find trails for all skill levels.

Downhill Skiing
The Bear Lake area has over 350 miles of groomed trails and wide open play areas with no crowds and no fences! There are miles of trails connecting Utah and Idaho that take you by spectacular wonders.
Only 13 miles west of Garden City, Beaver Mountain Ski Resort offers downhill skiing, snowboarding and night skiing. Skiers of every age and ability delight to the thrills of “shushing” down the fabulous Utah powder. Four chairlifts provide access for all levels of skiers. Ski rentals are available. Open 7 days/week, 9am-4pm, December-March. Closed Christmas Day.
Off the groomed trails, you can seemingly drive forever in the wide open or climb the mountains for an amazing view of Bear Lake and the surrounding area. The season starts in late November and extends into April. The variety of terrain and breathtaking scenery offers snowmobilers of all abilities the chance to find challenges and fun! Local rentals available. Be sure to check Idaho & Utah regulations if you bring your own.
Cross-Country Skiing When winter comes to Bear Lake Valley, you can often ski right from your motel room. Excellent crosscountry skiing can be found on the
ATV trails of summer. Nearby Logan Canyon offers scenic trails through the mountain wilderness.
Winter & Fishing Bear Lake is ice covered four out of five years and jigging for trout and whitefish is always productive in January and February. When the lake is open, jigging and trolling off the rock pile can provide a limit of cisco or trophy trout.
Monster Polar Plunge and Cisco Disco Every January, anglers wade waist-deep in the icy water or fish through the ice, dipping nets for the Bonneville Cisco. Once the limit has
been caught, the crowds shift to the State Park Marina where the Bear Lake Monster Polar Plunge takes place. Costumes are encouraged, families and groups are welcome, and every participant gets a prize!
Bear Lake Winter Festival & Craft Fair Over President’s Day weekend in February; stop by the Bear Lake Winter Festival and Craft Fair held in Garden City, UT. Handmade crafts and delicious chocolates make this the perfect winter get away. You can also enjoy music and dancing at the Snowball Dance in Montpelier, ID that weekend.
MUSEUMS
The National Oregon/ California Trail Center at Montpelier Paintings, historical displays and live interpreters dressed in period costume are utilized to help visitors share in the “Living History” of the trail. The heritage center depicts the 2000-mile, five-month journey on the Oregon Trail. A Wagon Master guides visitors through the interactive tour that includes a ride in a simulated covered wagon ride generated by advanced computer technology. The visitor has the opportunity to walk on the soil that travelers passed over hundreds of years ago in Clover Creek Encampment of the NOCTC. Located within the Trail Center, view displays of artifacts, diaries and relics of the pioneers of Bear Lake Valley including railroad memorabilia. Bear Lake Valley Historical Marker located on Hwy 89 marks the first Oregon Trail cut through the valley. Charles C. Rich Memorial Paris Tabernacle, dedicated to the first white settlers sent by early Mormon pioneer leader, Brigham Young, to settle the Bear Lake Valley.
Rendezvous Rest Stop marks the site of mountain men rendezvous held in the Bear Lake Valley during the summers of 1826 and 1827. Famous mountain men such as Jim Bridger, Jedediah Smith and William Ashley attended this well known rendezvous.
The Historical Paris Tabernacle
British Settlers Historical Marker Bloomington, ID, dedicated to early pioneers of British descent that settled the Bear Lake Valley.
The Randolph War Memorial and Laketown War Memorial are dedicated to the veterans of foreign wars.
The Tabernacle was completed by Mormon pioneers in 1889. It was designed by Don Carlos Young, and is an impressive red sandstone building quarried from Indian Creek on the east side of Bear Lake. Bear Lake Shake What better way to kick of summer than with a motorboat Poker run, sailboat open house, and Dutch-oven cook off? Family games, and kite flying are also on the schedule for this event held in June.
Butch Cassidy Days The famous outlaw Butch Cassidy robbed a bank in Montpelier, ID in 1893. Butch Cassidy Days is held in July to commemorate this event. Performances and the Allinger Community Theatre, Side Walk Sales, and a Shootout are all part of the festivities.
Bear Lake County Salmon BBQ The Annual Bear Lake County Salmon BBQ, held at the park in St. Charles, ID, is just what your taste buds have been waiting for. Raspberry Days The harvest of the delicious raspberry crop during August brings visitors from all to Garden City to sample these succulent treats. Allinger Community Theatre With shows every month, the Allinger Community Theatre provides year round entertainment for locals and visitors.
