SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

John Williams is a freshman and is in his second semester at Barclay College. He graduated from Abilene High School in 2004. Since then he has worked at various jobs.

John Williams is a freshman and is in his second semester at Barclay College. He graduated from Abilene High School in 2004. Since then he has worked at various jobs. When John’s Aunt Sharon married Jim Day, a Barclay board member, his mother began hearing about Barclay College. Money for college had been a problem for John, but when his mother told him about the Full Tuition Scholarship he became more interested. As a result he looked at the web site and then called his Aunt Sharon. While visiting with the admissions department, John was told that a Barclay graduate, Justin Shamberger, and his wife, Annalisa, lived in Abilene. Checking out that lead, John found out that he and the Shambergers attended the same church. His visit to Barclay coincided with the students first day back after Spring Break. John said the people at Barclay were really helpful, and the way the financial part of the plan worked, he felt the confirmation he needed to decide to attend Barclay. John was first saved as a child. His parents are Christians and attended church but grew closer to the Lord when the family began attending a community church. John’s uncle, who is a minister, told John’s mother, that he thought John would be good minister. When John came to Barclay he planned to major in Psychology. At the convocation service, the first week of school, the president spoke on “It is not good enough to succeed, you need to lead.” During that service, John felt called into Pastoral Ministry.

John Williams John worked at a seasonal job last winter in Abiline. When he was laid off after the work slowed, John decided to move to Haviland. He attained a job with the Haviland Farmer’s Co-Op the same day he arrived in town and plans to work there again this coming summer. The adjustment to college has been easy for John. He likes to study and doesn’t mind spending time alone. However, he has made a conscious effort to be outgoing and get to know the other students. He is surprised how mature the students are. He says they are eighteen year olds but he is impressed with how grown up many of them are. Recently, John has been asked to speak regularly at the Wellsford Community Church. This is a challenge John looks forward to doing. He knows that God will be with him in his ministry.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7)

Thank You For Ringing The Bell

It had been 8 years since Barclay College had its last phonathon. Larry Lewis, the VP of Institutional Advancement, was given the task of resurrecting this event as one of his first responsibilities. This past fall, 26 Barclay College students made about 900 phone calls to alumni and friends on five different nights. Dr. Frazier and Mr. Lewis were not sure of the response the student callers would receive, but they set an ambitious goal of $20,000. After two nights of calling, God blessed this institution with $19,420 in pledges. The final total after 5 nights of calling was $68,160, which is an indication of our faithful supporters and God’s provisions. We wish you could have observed the fun and exciting atmosphere as students rang a bell each time they received a pledge. What a blessing it was watching the student callers, and listen as they prayed for their special requests. The team of students who earned the most pledges in a single night included Melynda Lujan, India Gutshall and Caitlin Young. We are thankful for those of you who made a pledge to our Full Tuition Scholarship fund and to the students who made calls during the phonathon. We apologize if you did not receive a phone call, but we would still love to hear from you. God continues to do great things at Barclay College and your support of the Full Tuition Scholarship program is valued and needed.

The Christmas Wreath

The challenge gift of $100,000 was a daunting gift. While it was deeply appreciated, one wondered, “Could it really be matched and become a reality?” As you know, you only get a matching gift if you match it dollar for dollar. The Barclay prayer letter, which is sent out each Monday stated that the Christmas Wreath was $7,976.20 short of its goal, requesting prayer for the remaining need to be met. The Lord worked another miracle when by the close of the day, Monday, January 13 the matching was complete. Thanks to every one of you, who has given to this wonderful gift, The Christmas Wreath. If you are nearby stop at the student center where the wreath is on display and see the many prayer requests that have been sent. Pause a minute to pray for the heartfelt requests you read.

NCCAA D2 Player of the Week to Lady Bear’s Epp The NCCAA Division II Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of February 3, 2014 is the Lady Bear’s Sophomore point guard from Corn, OK, RaeLyn Epp. She has exemplified the Christian ideals held by the NCCAA and has been rewarded for her accomplishments for the preceding week. Epp went 10-14 from the field on Friday in the Lady Bears’s 88-81 win over Dallas Christian, including 5-5 from three and 8-10 from the free throw line. In addition, she had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Twenty-five of her thirty-three points came in the second half alone to lead the Bears to victory. On Saturday she followed up her stellar performance with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals on 43 percent shooting against Grace University. Her weekend averages were 24.5 points, 4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 4 steals on 57 percent shooting from the field (8-12 from three) in two wins. Upon hearing the news, Head Coach Brad Lingafelter was ecstatic and said, “The NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week is a great honor for RaeLyn. She certainly earned it with her fantastic weekend in two big wins for us. She is a special player, and I am very proud of her as a player and a person.”

Bears Capture Road Win Saturday afternoon the Bears limped over to Moberly, MO for their game against Central Christian College of the Bible following a tough loss the night before at St. Louis Christian College (Florissant, MO). While the Bears neared the midway point of conference play, the stakes were increased against CCCB as both teams battled for seeding in the looming MCCC tournament. It was a familiar tune early in the game for the Bears as the Saints knocked down some early threes and controlled the offensive glass to build an early lead. However, thanks to the sharp shooting of Freshman Caleb Davis, who finished 3-6 from three, the Bears stayed in contact with Saints even though they would trail by a score of 28-43 at halftime. While the situation looked bleak, the Bears were able to inch back into the game. In the early portion of the second half, CCCB’s best post picked up his third foul and they were forced into a zone. The Bears took advantage of the Saints interior play as they slashed through their zone and attacked the basket with abandonment, capitalizing on 25 of 34 second half free throws. In the waning minutes of the game, the Bears were able to get key stops defensively and knock down free throws to seal the win, 78-74. The Bears improved to 2-4 in MCCC play with three home conference games remaining.
