Additionally, the phone can also accommodate two mobile numbers, thanks to its dual-SIM slots. The only downside with this phone is that there is no way to physically expand the storage capacity. However, owners of the Moto G will be given an additional 50GB of storage space on Google Drive, free of charge for two years, on top of the existing 15GB that comes with every Google Drive account.

ooking for something a little fancy, but still want to keep within the budget? Then get the Sony Xperia M2. With an 8MP camera and a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 powering the phone, the Sony Xperia M2 is one of the best mid-range camera smartphones which you can buy on the market. Like its bigger and more powerful Xperia brothers, the Sony Xperia M2 is built using the same, elegant OmniBalance design, along with its use of the company’s tempered glass on both the back and the front of the screen.

his is hands down, one of the best value smartphones money can buy. °Peace of Mind With Original Accessories 4. Xiaomi Mi 3

5. HTC Desire 610

6. ASUS ZenFone 6

he Xiaomi Mi 3 was officially sold in Malaysia just a couple of months ago, but the phone has already taken the country by storm. At RM889, it’s considered to be the most affordable smartphone with specs that reach well into the premium section. It’s powered by a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM and even has a 13MP camera for some ultra-sharp images. To top it off, it supports the latest Android 4.4 (KitKat) OS. The only drawback of this phone is its lack of 4G LTE connectivity.

s one of the few mid-range smartphones to use a nanoSIM card configuration, the HTC Desire 610 has some rather impressive specs. It has 4G LTE connectivity and an expandable microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB of additional storage. It’s also got a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM, so it’s not a slouch either. Last but not least, it runs on HTC’s Sense UI, on top of the latest Android 4.4 (KitKat) OS. Unfortunately, this phone does not have Full HD resolution.

f you’re looking for a smartphone that runs on a processor other than Qualcomm’s, then the ASUS ZenFone 6 may just be the phone for you. It’s one of the few Android smartphones that makes use of Intel’s Atom Z2580 dual-core processor. Apart from that, it has 2GB of RAM and dual-SIM slots. It also runs on the Zen UI, which is based on Android’s 4.3 (Jelly Bean) OS, and will be upgradable to the latest Android 4.4 (KitKat) OS.

If you’ve just bought a brand-new Android smartphone, the best way to make full use of its potential is to download apps. Not all apps are useful though, so here are some suggestions on what apps to download.

his user-friendly ‘mobile darkroom’ allows you to edit and share photos that have that film grain effect. Once you’ve edited a photo to your liking, you’ll be able to share them on the integrated photo publishing platform, VSCO Grid, or any other social media.

5. Avast! Mobile Security and Antivirus

rotect your Android smartphones from malware and viruses with Avast!. Packed with anti-malware tools, anti-theft tools and privacy tools, this app gives your new smartphone absolute protection. With this app, you can surf the net on your mobile without any worries.

{ Must Have Apps / Ori vs AP }

aze is a navigational app that combines some social elements. It makes use of maps from Google and location knowledge from Foursquare, as well as traffic knowledge from its users. This makes Waze, possible the best free turn-byturn GPS app available. In Waze, users can report jams, accidents, roadworks, and more to help other road users.

mobile phone would be incomplete without a messaging system. WhatsApp is one of the better known apps, for good reason. 6. Instagram

his app allows you to capture moments on-the go and instantly share them on social media sites. Instagram also lets you add various effects and preset filters that help to enhance the quality of pictures, as well as add a dash of fun to them.

°Similar, Yet Different The Difference Between Original and Authorized Products hen buying a new mobile phone, we often hear the terms AP and Original. In general, AP sets are cheaper and are usually talked about in a hushed tone, but what do the terms AP and Original actually mean? Authorized Products, better known as AP, are genuine products made by the manufacturer. They are not copies nor are they refurbished sets. What makes them different is that they are not distributed by authorized distributors. Because AP sets are not distributed by authorized distributors, retailers are able to purchase them at a lower price, which in turn lets the retailers sell them at cheaper prices. We’re looking at pricing that’s roughly 10 to 30 percent cheaper than that of an Original set.

VIBES • AUG – OCT 2014

However, it’s important to understand that AP phones do not come with an official warranty, which means that repairing an AP phone could be a hassle and cost more in the long run. They also may come from a different region, where the phone’s frequencies may be different and some features may be locked. Identifying which phones are Original and which ones are AP is simple and takes only a little know-how: • The first way is to check if your SIM card works with the phone. Some phones are locked and will only function with SIM cards from specific carriers and/or countries. • The warranty is provided from the seller. If the shop closes down, there’s no way to claim warranty.

• An AP phone generally costs less than an Original set. • Repair services will be provided by third party service centers, instead of from the manufacturer. • The software of the phone may or may not be updated.

If there’s a holographic sticker from an authorized distributor (e.g. Zitron, Ingram Micro, etc.). • Finally, you can dial *#60# on the phone. A 15-digit number – the phone’s IMEI number – will appear. If this number matches the box it came with, it’s an Original set.

• Remove the back cover of the phone and its battery (if possible).
