BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2007-2008 SEASON

Dear Cougar Fans: I am delighted to present our 2007-2008 Basketball Media Guide, which highlights our ongoing commitment to intercollegiate athletics. We are proud of the continued growth in our athletic programs and of our scholar athletes, whose graduation rate is impressive. They have achieved standards of academic excellence, as well as athletic success, and demonstrate that at Caldwell College our first priority is a quality higher education. This is an exciting time at Caldwell College. Our brand new state-of-the-art, wireless residence hall opened in fall 2007. Our students tell us how much they appreciate the supportive caring atmosphere on campus and the student/faculty ratio of 12 to 1, which helps them achieve their intellectual, personal and athletic potential. Our foundation is rooted in the Catholic Dominican tradition. We have many student services that complement our students’ experiences in academics and athletics. They range from community service and campus ministry to student clubs and social activities. Our stimulating growth has created unique opportunities for expanded academic programs and technological advancements. The College attributes much of the growth to its innovative use of campus-wide advances in technology, the increased interest in resident life, our affordable tuition and a faculty and staff who are committed to inspiring goal-oriented students with the passion to succeed. That passion is played over and over again with the talent, dedication, and hard work of our athletic teams. We have much to celebrate every year. Last winter, our men’s basketball team won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since our transition to the NCAA was completed in 2002. The Athletic Department at Caldwell College is truly a treasure. The College’s enhanced institutional image among our prestigious peer institutions and the excellence of our athletic programs continues to grow since joining the NCAA Division II in 1998. Eight of our teams have competed in NCAA championship events since becoming eligible in 2002, and I am confident that all of our athletic programs will continue to be considered among the best in the conference and the region for years to come. Your support of Caldwell College athletics is deeply appreciated. I hope to see you at some of our upcoming athletic events. Sister Patrice Werner, O.P, Ph.D. President

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

2007-2008 PREVIEW The transition to a new head coach can be filled with highs and lows, as last year’s Caldwell College women’s basketball team found out in Linda Cimino’s first season. But by February, the Cougars had improved and were in position for a berth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament until injuries hampered the team down the stretch. With four starters among the eight returning players from last season, the team is optimistic that it will improve upon last year’s 10-17 campaign that saw the Cougars finish one place out of the conference playoffs. Four seniors, along with junior forward Mackenzie Lynch, give Cimino a solid and experienced core group of players who are comfortable with her style of play. “Our returning players have spent a year with me, and they know what I expect now,” Cimino said. “Everyone has improved since the beginning of last season.” Joining the eight returners are six newcomers who bring different elements to the team, giving Cimino more depth and team speed in her second season at Caldwell. “We will be a pressing team this year,” she said. “Our whole offense will be based around our defense. Because of our speed and quickness, we’ll be using all types of full court pressure. Our defensive style also will require us to substitute frequently, meaning the new players will play right away.” The experience and depth of this year’s team is personified in seniors Melissa Freeman, Phylicia Holmes and Dana Leary, who are beginning their fourth season together at Caldwell. The trio enters the

2

season having scored a combined 1,976 points while recording 1,339 rebounds over the past three years, with Freeman and Leary having played in all 82 games. This will be the first time since the 2003-04 season that the Cougars’ roster will include seniors who have played all four years at Caldwell. “Our seniors are an important part of our team, and the younger players can learn from their example,” Cimino said. As the Cougars found out last year, one factor that can test depth is health, which Cimino sees as a key element entering this season. Last year, Lynch, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, suffered a seasonending injury with six games remaining. At the time, Caldwell was in position to finish among the top eight in the CACC and qualify for the conference tournament. But without Lynch, the Cougars went 1-5 and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years. Lynch, who has fully recovered from the injury, emerged as one of the top players in the CACC in her first season at Caldwell after transferring from Bryant University. She averaged 18.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per contest to receive second team allCACC and first team all-Met honors. Her most memorable game was a 44-point, 22rebound performance in an 82-72 overtime victory at the University of the Sciences that earned her CACC and ECAC Player of the Week accolades. Freeman, who averaged 8.0 points per game as a junior, is back to bolster the Cougars’ frontcourt, especially on the offensive end. With over 700 points in her career, Freeman gives the Cougars a proven scorer around the basket. Another

Khaliqa Davis

victim of a serious injury was junior forward Janay Prim, who missed all but nine games last year. Prim, who adds size and athleticism in the post, has the potential to be an impact player when healthy. Sophomore Kate Shutz, who also spent time on the bench due to injury last season, has improved her strength and quickness and could contribute up front in her second season. The incoming frontcourt players include junior forward Janay Perkins, who played two years at the Community College of Rhode Island before transferring to Caldwell. An athletic player who rebounds well, Perkins helped CCRI advance to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament last season after averaging 9.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Freshman forward Lisa Federico possesses good size and athleticism and has solid fundamentals in the post.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

2007-2008 PREVIEW “The two Janays [Prim and Perkins] could be difference-makers in the frontcourt for us, because of the match-up problems other teams will have,” Cimino said. Depth in the backcourt is important in Cimino’s guard-oriented system, which sometimes employs four guards on the court at the same time. Leary, who often plays near the basket, has tallied 781 points in her career at Caldwell. Her effort and energy level often sets the tone for the Cougars on both ends of the court, especially against stronger competition. Two of Leary’s best offensive games last season came against last year’s CACC Tournament finalists in Philadelphia University (24 points in a 79-71 win) and Holy Family (22 points). Holmes has developed into one of the top rebounding guards in the conference, averaging 7.6 boards per game over the past two seasons. Her athleticism has yet to translate into big scoring numbers, but Cimino feels that could change in Holmes’ final year. “I think Phylicia could have a breakout year,” Cimino said. “She worked hard in the preseason to improve her outside shot and I think it’ll pay off.” Another senior, Khaliqa Davis, returns as the starting point guard after posting averages of 8.7 points and 3.1 assists last season, her first at Caldwell. The speedy Davis, who transferred from Southern New Hampshire before last season, also swiped 62 steals to rank fourth in the CACC in that category. Davis’ defensive prowess will be enhanced by a more pressing style of defending that the Cougars will use this season. Also at the point is sophomore

Lauren Serritella, who showed potential while playing in 19 games with one start as a freshman. The Cougars welcome a group of freshmen at the guard positions with a variety of offensive and defensive skills. Stephanie Cadet is a good perimeter shooter with the composure to play the point. Also a good defender, Cadet displayed an excellent knowledge of the game while earning all-Nassau County honors as a junior and senior at Elmont (N.Y.) Memorial High School. Her backcourt mate at Elmont, Abena George, possesses the same quickness as Davis. George, who was all-County as a senior, is a strong on-the-ball defender who eventually will be able to play either the point or at off-guard. Kirsty Leedham brings her versatile offensive skills to the Cougars’ backcourt after starring at Cheshire (Conn.) Academy. A native of England, Leedham has an extremely quick release on her shot, which allows her to score in a variety of ways. She has good basketball bloodlines in the family, as her sisters Johannah and Jennifer play basketball at Franklin Pierce University. Danielle Hepkins is a developing guard with good athleticism who has the potential to contribute in the future.

the Cougars slated to face Northeast Region powers Stonehill and Bryant. Within the CACC, the addition of Chestnut Hill has resulted in the creation of North and South divisions, with Caldwell playing in the North Division. The Cougars, who were picked third in the North in the CACC Preseason Poll, will face South Division opponents only once this season. South Division schools Holy Family, Wilmington and Philadelphia, along with Dominican from the North, are the conference favorites. But with an experienced group of returnees, an all-conference player and several talented newcomers, Caldwell should not be overlooked by opponents this season. Cimino is confident her squad has what it takes to compete to be among the best in the North Division. “I think we’ve made good strides so far,” she said. “We’ve put the foundation in, and we’ll continue to build on that foundation to work towards our ultimate goal of earning an NCAA Tournament berth.”

Overall, Cimino likes the look of her team on the eve of the new season. “I’m very excited that our returning players have improved,” Cimino said. “I think the new players will fit into our program well and I’m looking forward to the season.” Tournaments at Bloomsburg and Bryant highlight the non-conference schedule, with

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

HEAD COACH LINDA CIMINO Linda Cimino begins her second season as coach of the Caldwell College women’s basketball team after guiding the Cougars to a 10-17 record in her first year. Cimino, who coached for five years at the high school and junior college level, came to Caldwell in 2006 after serving as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Adelphi University the previous season. Cimino’s high-energy coaching style and enthusiasm for the game has revitalized a program that reached doublefigures in wins for the first time in three years.

Linda Cimino Adelphi University ‘01 Second season

In fact, the Cougars were in position for a berth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament until an injury ended the season for Mackenzie Lynch, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, with six games to play. One of the highlights of the 2006-07 season was a 66-62 victory over Adelphi, Cimino’s alma mater. “Last year we made good strides towards putting in the foundation for a successful program,” Cimino said. “Now we can continue to build on that foundation and keep working towards our ultimate goal of earning an NCAA Tournament berth.” After one year on the job, Cimino recognizes the potential of the program to be competitive in the CACC and the Northeast Region. “Because of the administration, the facilities, the strong academics and the players we have here now, Caldwell College is very attractive to recruits,” Cimino said. “We’re located in a good area for talent, but we’re also looking to expand our recruiting efforts to find the players we need to be successful.”

and three-point field goals. She also holds the school record for most three-pointers in a game with six. While at Adelphi, Cimino built a reputation of being a clutch performer in lategame situations. In her first collegiate game, she hit the game-winning basket at the buzzer to defeat the University of New Haven in overtime. Cimino continues to play in the urban professional league in Manhattan. Cimino graduated from Adelphi in 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education, and earned her Master’s degree in Health Education from Adelphi in 2004. She also received a Master’s degree in Administration from Touro College in May of 2006. Cimino taught health for five years, including four years at Calhoun High School, where she also was an Adaptive Physical Education teacher. Cimino is an American Heart Association CPR/AED instructor and a member of both the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. Off the basketball court, Cimino has made an impact on campus as an assistant athletic director and Senior Woman Administrator. She coordinates the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is active on campus and in the community. Last year, Caldwell’s SAAC raised over $1,000 for the Make-AWish Foundation. Through SAAC, Cimino also organizes the community service efforts for each team. She also works with campus ministry to assist with Midnight Run, which brings food to homeless people in New York City. In October, Cimino organized a Midnight Madness on campus to kick off the beginning of the basketball season.

Cimino returned to Adelphi in August 2005 to become an assistant coach under Kelley Watts, helping the Panthers to an overall record of 1513 and a third-place finish in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. Prior to her stint at Adelphi, Cimino was the varsity girls’ basketball coach for three seasons at Calhoun High School in Merrick, N.Y., where she also coached volleyball for four years. Cimino began her coaching career in 2001 as the head women’s basketball coach at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, N.Y.

“My role as an administrator has allowed me to be involved in many aspects of campus life beyond coaching basketball,” Cimino said. “In my time at Caldwell, I have experienced so many things, from attending conference and NCAA Tournaments with our other teams, to working with students on campus, to traveling to France with our men’s basketball team. I’m appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of an athletic department like Caldwell’s and I thank Mark Corino and the College administration.”

A member of Adelphi’s basketball squad from 1997 to 2000, Cimino still appears on the Panthers’ all-time lists for free throw percentage

A native of Lincoln, R.I., Cimino was all-state in both basketball and softball at North Smithfield High School.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

ASSISTANT COACHES Veronica Mullen Assistant Coach Adelphi University ’03 (second season) Veronica Mullen begins her second season as an assistant coach at Caldwell College. A former teammate of Cimino’s at Adelphi University, Mullen was a two-year starter at guard for the Panthers from 2000-02. She was named the team’s most valuable player as a junior after averaging 13.8 points per game. Mullen then helped the Panthers win their first New York Collegiate Athletic Conference title and advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament during her senior year. She also was a member of the volleyball team at Adelphi. Before transferring to Adelphi in 2000, Mullen was a twoyear starter at N.J.I.T. “Veronica and I were teammates and roommates in college, so there is a trust between us that is invaluable to me,” Cimino said. “She knows the type of talent needed to be successful, and we will rely on her to recruit the talent in the tri-state area.” A native of Ridgefield Park, N.J., Mullen earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Adelphi in 2003. She spent the 2005-06 season as a coach at Demarest (N.J.) High School. Currently, Mullen is a physical education teacher in Union City, N.J., and plays basketball in the Urban Professional League in New York City with Cimino. She is working towards a Master’s degree in Health at New Jersey City University.

Veronica Mullen Assistant Coach Adelphi University ’03 (second season)

Mullen currently resides in Caldwell, N.J. Kylee Wilson Assistant Coach Adelphi University ’02 (first season) Kylee Wilson joins the Cougars this season as an assistant coach. Wilson, who played with Caldwell head coach Linda Cimino and assistant coach Veronica Mullen at Adelphi University, comes to Caldwell after serving as an assistant coach at Drew University last season. While at Drew, Wilson helped the Rangers set the school record for conference wins in a season en route to qualifying for the ECAC Tournament. A 2002 graduate of Adelphi, Wilson played three sports: basketball, softball and cross country. She was captain of the Panthers’ basketball team during her senior season, earning NYCAC All-Academic Team honors while leading Adelphi to the Sweet 16 of the 2002 NCAA Division II Tournament. A fouryear starter in softball, Wilson was named an NFCA Scholar-Athlete three times while helping the Panthers reach the NCAA Regional three times. She also was a member of the Panthers’ cross country team that captured the 2001 NYCAC title. “Since I’ve known Kylee from our college days, there is a sense of loyalty that already exists between us,” Cimino said. “Her expertise in strength and conditioning will help us tremendously in taking our program to the next level.”

Kylee Wilson Assistant Coach Adelphi University ’02 (first season)

After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Wilson completed her Master’s degree in Studio Art at Adelphi in 2004. She also works as a personal trainer. A native of Omaha, Neb., Wilson resides in Hackettstown, N.J.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

2006-2007 SEASON REVIEW The 2006-2007 season marked a new beginning for the women’s basketball program at Caldwell College. For the first time in six years, the Cougars started the season with a new head coach, Linda Cimino. With some talented newcomers joining a solid group of 10 returning players, the Cougars were optimistic they could improve on the previous season’s eighth-place finish in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Cimino started her career at Caldwell the right way with a 69-64 victory at Bloomsburg University in the season opener. Also making her debut for the Scarlet, White and Gold was sophomore forward Mackenzie Lynch, who tallied 16 points and 17 rebounds in the win. Lynch emerged as a force early in the season, registering at least 20 points or more in seven of her first 10 games. In an 82-72 overtime triumph at the University of the Sciences on Dec. 9, she racked up 44 points and 22 rebounds to earn CACC and ECAC Player of the Week honors. After starting the year 1-4, the Cougars won seven of their next 11 games to even their record at 8-8 while improving to 6-5 in conference play. The stretch included a non-

conference win over Adelphi University, Cimino’s alma mater, a convincing 79-71 victory over Philadelphia University, and a two-point triumph at Nyack College on junior guard Phylicia Holmes’ 10-foot jumper with one second on the clock.

her three-year career with 793 points, also made 146 three-pointers to rank second alltime at Caldwell. Coyle, Holmes and junior forward Dana Leary each earned CACC AllAcademic Team honors for posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

After three straight conference losses put the Cougars at 8-11, senior guard Shannon Coyle scored 18 points to help beat Felician College and end the losing skid. With the team looking to make a strong run down the stretch, Lynch suffered a season-ending injury in a defeat to Dominican College on Feb. 5. Without their leading scorer and rebounder, the Cougars won just one of their final six games to finish 10-17 overall and 814 in the CACC, missing the eighth and final playoff spot by one game. In the team’s final victory, an 81-64 win over Nyack on Feb. 20, junior guard Khaliqa Davis swiped 10 steals, the highest single-game steals total in the conference last season. Lynch finished the season with averages of 18.5 points and 10.8 rebounds to rank fourth and second, respectively in the CACC. She was named to the all-CACC second team and the all-Met first team, becoming the first Cougar to earn either honor since 2004. Coyle, who completed

Here is a sampling of some recent events the SAAC has participated in.

MEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

2007-2008 PREVIEW it means absolutely nothing unless we are committed to the proper approach as a group.” That approach of understanding roles and playing within the system helped carry the Cougars down the stretch to its sixth conference title and first trip to the NCAA Tournament. With the experience on this year’s roster, Corino is hopeful his team can continue its successful run into the new season. “To have people that know what we’re about helps,” he said. “It’s also a plus that they’ve had success with that system. They should know that if they execute and do the things within the system, things can work out well, as they did last year.”

Adam Sabree

The Caldwell College men’s basketball team looks to build upon its strong finish last season to attain greater heights in 2007-08. Ten of 12 players return from last year’s squad that won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament as the fifth seed and came within three points of upsetting undefeated and second-ranked Bentley College in the first round of the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament. With so many key contributors back, combined with some talented newcomers, it is no surprise that the CACC Preseason Poll predicted the Cougars to win the North Division. “It’s an honor and a good feeling to be looked at as the favorite,” said head coach Mark Corino, who begins his 20th season at Caldwell. “It’s flattering, but in reality

18

Corino and the coaching staff had even more time to reinforce their philosophy this past summer, as the Cougars traveled to France to play four exhibition games. Playing quality opponents with a different style benefitted the team on the court, but the true impact of the trip probably will be felt off the court. “The experiences we had in France and being together for about three weeks should help mold us and help our team continue to grow,” Corino said. “They got to know each other in a different setting and come together as a family.” Another positive of the France trip was the opportunity for the team to compete without graduated guard Jean Georges, a first team all-CACC selection who led the Cougars in scoring with 18.0 points per contest last season. Corino knows that one player won’t completely replace all of the attributes of a player of Georges’ caliber. “Jean turned out to be one of the better players we’ve ever had here,” Corino said. “He improved every year, and without him we’re not able to win last year. Our experienced players will help, and hopefully some of the new players are capable of contributing to help us overcome the loss of Jean.”

That experience is especially apparent in the backcourt, which includes three of the team’s four seniors. Last season the pointguard tandem of seniors Hans Stelzer and Michael Wise proved to be an effective one, with both players thriving in their roles. Stelzer dished out a team-high 3.5 assists per game while leading the team in steals with 44. Along with running the team effectively on the offensive end, Stelzer emerged as a defensive stopper, often guarding the opponent’s top scoring threat. Wise provided more of a scoring punch, averaging 5.7 points while seeing time at both guard spots. One of the team’s most improved players, Wise picked a good time to have his best game, recording career highs of 17 points and six rebounds in Caldwell’s 74-65 win at Goldey-Beacom in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals. Senior Adam Sabree started 22 games before an injury limited his playing time down the stretch. Sabree, who has started 45 of his 91 career games, scored 4.3 points per game last year while also providing the Cougars with a solid defensive presence. Other backcourt returnees include junior Carl Augustin, and sophomore John Reed. Augustin, who blocked the University of the Sciences’ final shot attempt at the buzzer to secure a 61-60 victory in the CACC final, has the ability to score in a variety of ways. Reed is an excellent shooter from three-point range. A pair of newcomers in sophomore Eddie Crockett and freshman Dante Rollins bring athleticism and quickness to the Cougars’ backcourt. Crockett, who played at Division I Nicholls State last season, is an explosive offensive player who can score off the dribble and from the perimeter. He is expected to share point-guard duties with Stelzer, allowing Wise to move to shooting guard. Rollins is a versatile guard who led Bloomfield Tech High School to a pair of Group 1 New Jersey state titles.

MEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

2007-2008 PREVIEW Caldwell’s frontcourt is big, deep and experienced, with six players back from last year. Six-foot-six senior forward B.J. Suchy is the team’s leading returning scorer after averaging 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season, earning a spot on the all-CACC third team. Suchy, who enters the season with 890 career points, made 20 three-pointers in 2006-07, adding another dimension to his offensive arsenal. Suchy is joined in the frontcourt by 6-7 sophomore Sam Cricelli, who tallied 10.9 points per game while leading the team in rebounding at 6.8 boards per contest in his first collegiate campaign. In the CACC Tournament title game, Cricelli tapped in his own missed free throw with 22 seconds left for the game-winning basket. If Corino wants to go big up front, he has centers Michael Luzzi and Wojciech Bocianowski to fill the bill. Luzzi is a 6-8 junior who averaged 4.1 points and 3.2 rebounds over 22 games last year. His impact was felt in the CACC Tournament, when he led the Cougars with nine rebounds in the semifinals and 10 boards in the finals. Like Luzzi, the 6-9 Bocianowski uses his large frame to eat up space inside. The native of Warsaw, Poland has improved offensively, and he gives the Cougars another option in the paint. Additionally, 67 sophomore forward Matt Cohen, who showed a lot of potential in his first season, will factor into the mix in the frontcourt. A talented newcomer and a familiar face provide even more versatility and ability to Caldwell’s frontcourt. Forward Tyler Emmons, a 6-5 sophomore who transferred from Lynn University, is a tough player inside who also can step out and score on the perimeter. The 2005 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Maine, Emmons averaged 4.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in 28 games for Lynn last season. The front line will be bolstered by the return of two-time all-CACC and all-Met performer

Manny Perez, who missed the majority of last year after suffering an injury in the second game of the season. A 6-7 junior forward, Perez, who has scored 1,025 points in just 65 career games, will help absorb the loss of Georges on the offensive end. Corino certainly is pleased with the depth of talent on his roster, which provides him with multiple lineup options and versatility at each position. But Corino is aware of the dangers of having many players who might deserve to play, and only a limited amount of minutes available. “The depth of this team is better than we’ve had in many years,” he said. “If the players can accept their roles and understand what it takes to be a champion, the depth can help us be successful. It also can backfire if people aren’t committed or if they won’t accept their roles.” This season the CACC will be divided into two divisions with the addition of Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, Pa. North Division teams like the Cougars will play a 16-game conference schedule, with homeand-home series against divisional opponents and single games versus South Division teams. Some of the stronger teams standing in the way of a repeat for Caldwell are North Division teams Post, Dominican and Bloomfield, and South Division schools Philadelphia and Holy Family. The shorter conference schedule allows Caldwell to play in four tournaments, including its own ECAC/Commerce Bank Classic on Dec. 22-23 in the George R. Newman Center. Northeast-10 teams Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire, along with Dominican, will participate. The Cougars will face some tough competition at the OrthoCarolina Classic in Wingate, N.C., including the host Wingate Bulldogs, who are ranked eighth in the NABC Division II Preseason Poll. Pace and Bridgeport, which played in last year’s

Hans Stelzer

NCAA Northeast Region Tournament, also are on the non-conference slate. With a deep and talented team looking to repeat as CACC champions and return to the NCAA Tournament, it figures to be an exciting basketball season at Caldwell. But Corino, who enters the year as the winningest active men’s college basketball coach in New Jersey with 429 career victories, knows that the banner from last season that hangs in the rafters of the Newman Center will not help his team win any games this season. “No one can take last year’s championship away from us. It is a great accomplishment,” he said. “But it has nothing to do with today.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

HEAD COACH MARK A. CORINO Mark Corino begins his 20th season as the head men’s basketball coach at Caldwell College and 25th overall. One of the most successful college coaches in the state of New Jersey, Corino is tied for fourth among men’s college coaches in the state with 429 career victories. After winning his 300th game at Caldwell as well as reaching the 400-win plateau for his career in an eventful 2006, Corino achieved another milestone in 2007 by winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament for the first time. Through 24 years, his overall record is 429-274, including a 334-226 mark in 19 seasons at Caldwell.

Mark Corino Kean University ’79 20th Season

“I’ve been fortunate to have been able to coach a number of outstanding student-athletes over the years, and certainly they deserve a lot of credit,” said Corino, who has coached eight NAIA AllAmericans and numerous all-CACC players while at Caldwell. “Also, in order to win a lot of games, you need to be around long enough to have the opportunity to do so. That wouldn’t be possible without the support of my family, as well as the administration at Caldwell College.” The list of Corino’s accomplishments is impressive: Five trips to the NAIA national tournament; one appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament; seven CACC regularseason championships; five CACC Tournament titles and a District 31 crown. Corino also has developed and recruited several talented players at Caldwell. In fact, in 11 of 12 seasons from 1990 to 2002, the NAIA All-America teams included a player from Caldwell College. Thirteen players, including all-time leading scorer and first team All-American Matt Stuart, have reached the 1,000-point milestone. And Corino himself has received several honors, including four CACC Coach of the Year awards. In 1992, Corino was named the Jersey 9 and District 31 Coach of the Year, and was selected by the All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association as its Coach of the Year in 1998. What makes all of these achievements even more impressive is that Corino had virtually no foundation on which to build such a successful

program when he came to Caldwell College in 1988, as the program was established one year before his arrival. Similarly, with Corino as the College’s first full-time athletic director, the athletic department has made significant strides in its short existence. In his first year, Corino headed a department that had three programs and no conference affiliation. Today, Caldwell has 11 intercollegiate athletic programs, with 10 competing in the CACC. Corino also oversaw the College’s transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, which was completed in 2003. Along with the jump to NCAA Division II status came an upgrade in facilities with the opening of the state-of-the-art George R. Newman Center, home of the Caldwell College basketball and volleyball teams. Corino also played a role in the creation of the CACC, which has grown to 13 members. Corino, who has served as the conference’s president during two separate stints, was named the CACC and NAIA Region X Administrator of the Year in 2000. He also was among 14 finalists for the NAIA National Athletic Administrator of the Year. A native of Belleville, N.J., Corino attended Kean (N.J.) University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in industrial arts. He later received a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Caldwell in 1997. Corino began his collegiate coaching career in 1983 at Bloomfield College, where he compiled a record of 95-48 in five seasons. Corino is the youngest of three brothers who have combined for more than 1,000 coaching victories at the collegiate and high school levels. Oldest brother Jimmy was a high school basketball coach, while Carl is one of the all-time winningest high school softball coaches in New Jersey. Corino, 52, resides in Cedar Grove, N.J., with his wife Susan, and daughter Michele. “My family has been tremendously supportive and without their understanding we would not have been able to accomplish all that we have here at Caldwell,” Corino said. “They’ve played an important part in our success as well.”

ASSISTANT COACHES Dean Johnson Assistant Coach University of New England ’86 (18th season) Dean Johnson is entering his 18th year as an assistant men’s basketball coach and his 14th season as head coach of the women’s softball team. He has also been the Associate Athletic Director in charge of NCAA compliance for the last eight years. “We wouldn’t have the success we’ve enjoyed over the years without the tireless efforts of Coach Johnson,” said Corino. “I don’t think people realize what a hard worker Dean is. His loyalty and commitment to this school cannot be overstated.” Johnson came to Caldwell in 1990 after coaching on the high school and college levels. As Caldwell’s softball coach, Johnson has compiled a record of 369-177 in 13 seasons while capturing three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament crowns. A four-time CACC Coach of the Year honoree, Johnson led the Cougars to the NCAA Northeast Region title and a berth in the Women’s College World Series in 2004. A native of Belgrade Lakes, Maine, Johnson set many basketball records as a point guard at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. Johnson graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Secondary Education. He earned a Master’s degree from Caldwell College in 1997.

He resides in Denville, N.J., with his wife Christine and daughter Katelyn. Dave DeFerrari Assistant Coach Green Mountain ‘86 (6th season) Dave DeFerrari begins his sixth year as an assistant men’s basketball coach, as well as the Fitness Center Manager at Caldwell College. DeFerrari began his coaching career at the high school level before becoming, at the age of 25, the head coach at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, N.Y., in 1989. He then spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Rutgers UniversityNewark before a two-year stint as the head coach at John Jay College in New York City, N.Y. Just prior to his arrival at Caldwell College, he served three years as the Director of Campus Recreation at Drew University in Madison, N.J. Before starting his coaching career, DeFerrari was a standout point guard and captain at Green Mountain College, where he set the school record for career assists and games played. A native of Secaucus, N.J., DeFerrari received his undergraduate degree in Recreation from Green Mountain in 1986. He later earned his Master’s degree in Physical Education from Montclair State University. DeFerrari and his wife Claudia reside in Secaucus, N.J.

Michael Lukacs Assistant Coach University of Maine ‘87 (1st season) Michael Lukacs comes to Caldwell after serving as an assistant coach at Bloomfield College last season. Before coaching at Bloomfield, Lukacs was an assistant coach at Kean University under former Caldwell assistant Bruce Hamburger for one year. He also brings head coaching experience to the Cougar staff, having served as the head coach at Pratt Institute from 1996 to 1999. After beginning his coaching career at the high school level, Lukacs entered the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Gardner-Webb University in 1991. He also worked as an assistant at Maine Maritime Academy and Newberry College before taking the head coaching position at Pratt. Lukacs graduated from the University of Maine in 1987 with a Bachelor’s degree in education. This past fall, he was named the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Caldwell. A native of Somerset, N.J., Lukacs lives in Middletown, N.J. with his wife Rosalie.

MEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-2008 SEASON

2006-2007 SEASON REVIEW freshman forward Sam Cricelli was fouled and went to the free throw line, making the first. His second free throw attempt was off the mark, but sophomore center Michael Luzzi kept the rebound alive for Cricelli, who pounced on the loose ball and tapped it in for a 61-60 Cougar lead. Sophomore guard Carl Augustin blocked the Devils’ final shot attempt as time expired to clinch Caldwell’s sixth CACC Tournament crown in the program’s 20-year history.

For the Caldwell College men’s basketball team, the phrase “all’s well that ends well” applies when looking back on the 2006-2007 season. After a solid start and a shaky stretch in the middle of their schedule, the Cougars put it together late in the season to win the 2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and advance to the program’s first NCAA Tournament. The conference championship and a thrilling game with secondranked Bentley College in the first round of the NCAA Northeast Regional made the 20062007 season a memorable one. The Cougars began the season with a split of two games at the Colorado School of Mines Tournament, then reeled off four straight wins at home, including a pair of victories in the inaugural Commerce Bank Classic. In the team’s home opener, junior forward B.J. Suchy’s three-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Cougars past three-time defending CACC champion Bloomfield College, 74-71. The fourth victory of the streak saw senior guard Jean Georges eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career with a 25-point effort against Felician College on Dec. 5. He is the 13th men’s basketball player at Caldwell to achieve the milestone. Three road losses sandwiched around a home win over Wilmington College left the Cougars at 6-4 before earning an exciting overtime victory at Franklin Pierce College on Dec. 21. Caldwell trailed the Ravens by as many as 17 points before staging a comeback in the second half. The new year was unkind initially to the Cougars, who opened 2007 with three

straight conference losses to fall to 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the CACC. With their playoff hopes in jeopardy, the Cougars won seven of their next nine games to improve to 9-7 in conference play. The run was capped by a close 67-66 victory over Holy Family University on Feb. 10, with Suchy scoring a career-high 24 points. After suffering two more defeats on the road, Caldwell picked up wins over Nyack College and Goldey-Beacom College to finish the season tied for fourth place with GoldeyBeacom with identical 11-9 records. The Cougars, who beat the Lightning 53-52 in the regular-season finale, opened the CACC Tournament at Goldey-Beacom as the fifth seed. A career-best 17 points from junior guard Michael Wise lifted the Cougars to a 74-65 triumph and advanced his team into the semifinals at Dominican College. Top-seeded Philadelphia University, which swept Caldwell during the regular season, stood in the way of the Cougars’ hopes of making the finals for the second time in three years. But 60 percent shooting in the second half and 20 points from Georges sparked Caldwell to a 73-64 upset of the Rams, who featured CACC Player of the Year Christian Burns. The final matched the Cougars with sixthseeded University of the Sciences, which defeated second-seeded Post University in the other semifinal. The two teams battled hard for the title, with neither team leading by more than five points during the game. The Devils held a 60-58 lead with under a minute to play. Then with 25 seconds on the clock,

The conference championship gave the Cougars an automatic bid to the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament, which was hosted by top-seeded and unbeaten Bentley College. As the eighth seed, Caldwell was paired with the 29-0 Falcons in the quarterfinal round. Despite being huge underdogs, the Cougars went toe-to-toe with the heavy favorites on their own court, never trailing by more than seven points. In fact, the Cougars held a 54-52 advantage with just 2:46 to play. But clutch shooting by the Falcons down the stretch dimmed the prospects of an upset, as Bentley built a 59-56 lead with just six seconds remaining. With the clock winding down, Wise dribbled down the left side and launched a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it was off the mark. The heartbreaking loss ended Caldwell’s season at 19-12. Georges completed his stellar career with 1,447 points to rank fifth all-time at Caldwell. He also received first team allCACC and allMet honors while being named the Most Valuable Player of the CACC To u r n a m e n t . Suchy was chosen third team all-CACC, with Cricelli earning CACC Rookie of the Week accolades four times. Junior guard Adam Jean Georges Sabree made his second appearance on the CACC All-Academic Team for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. 31

FRANCE 2007 – THE ROAD TRIP OF A LIFETIME This past August, the Caldwell College men’s basketball team spent 10 days in France to play a four-game exhibition schedule. Along the way, the team went sight-seeing in Paris, spent an emotional day touring the beaches of Normandy, explored a 16th-century castle in Chambord, perused the shops in downtown Bordeaux, visited a duck farm and a vineyard, and watched a professional soccer match, among other things. And yes, the Cougars also played some basketball, facing teams in Blois, Doazit and Bayonne. During their adventures, the players wrote down their reflections on a blog for the Caldwell College Athletics website.

BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2007-2008 SEASON

CENTRAL ATLANTIC COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference is an NCAA Division II Conference composed of 13 institutions in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The member institutions are Bloomfield College, Caldwell College, Chestnut Hill College, Dominican (NY) College, Felician College, Georgian Court University, Goldey-Beacom College, Holy Family University, Nyack College, Philadelphia University, Post University, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Wilmington (DE) University. The CACC was founded in 1965 and featured seven original members which competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA): Bloomfield, Caldwell, Dominican, Georgian Court, Nyack, Post and St. Thomas Aquinas. The seven schools applied for Division II membership in 1998. In 2002 the CACC qualified for NCAA Division II Provisional conference status and it achieved active status in July of 2004. During the span from 1998-2004, the conference underwent numerous changes in addition to upgrading to Division II. In 1999, St. Thomas Aquinas left the conference and five new members joined. Felician, Goldey-Beacom, Holy Family, USP and Wilmington, all NAIA schools, immediately applied for Division II status upon becoming members. In 2000, New Jersey Institute of Technology boosted the membership to 12 schools and that number ballooned to 13 in 2005 when Philadelphia University came aboard. NJIT moved on to Division I status after the 2005-06 season, but the addition of Chestnut Hill College brings the CACC back to 13 schools in 2007-08. The CACC enjoyed early success in the ranks of Division II and Caldwell led the way in 2004. The Cougar softball team won the NCAA

Northeast Region Championship and advanced to the Women’s College World Series in Alamonte Springs, FL. The Cougar baseball team was selected to the 2004 NCAA Northeast Region Tournament and won its first game before being eliminated. The 2004-05 season saw the Bloomfield men’s basketball team pick up the league’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win in basketball with an upset, 79-77 victory over Saint Anselm. The Holy Family women notched the CACC’s first victory in women’s basketball in 2005-06 with a win over Pace University. Furthermore, the Goldey-Beacom men’s golf team won the 2005-06 Northeast Super Regional Tournament and became the first CACC team to advance to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championships.

Currently, seven of the CACC’s season-ending tournaments lead to automatic NCAA qualifications, including women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball and men’s golf. Off the court and field, the CACC and its studentathletes take pride in the balance between academics and athletics. The CACC finished third nationally among Division II Conferences for the graduation rate of its student-athletes, according to the latest NCAA report. Furthermore, the conference established its inaugural All-Academic team in the fall of 2004 and the number of names on the list continues to grow each year.

The CACC has also become one of the national leaders in the annual Division II Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraiser. The 2005-06 academic year saw the CACC finish fourth among all Division II Conferences in money raised ($7,420) and was one of only three conferences to have 100% par ticipation among its member schools. Division II is composed of 22 conferences and 16 independent institutions ranging from coast-tocoast-and beyond. Division II is the only NCAA membership division with programs in Alaska and Puerto Rico. Also, all but one Hawaiian institution is a Division II member.
