Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) CBN tipped tools and inserts are excellent for the continuous cutting of a wide range of hardened steels, powdered metals, cast irons and super alloys. The products are precision ground with hones for machining to sub-micron finishes with maximum tool life. CBN tipped tools can take the place of grinding.

Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) PCD tipped boring bars and inserts are excellent for continuous cutting of a wide range of non-ferrous and non-metal materials. The products are precision ground for machining to sub-micron finishes with maximum tool life. PCD tipped tools allow for higher cutting speeds with longer tool life.

Guidelines for CBN

(Ideal for hard ferrous metal -45 Rc plus)

Depth of cut should not exceed 30% of CBN tip length. Coolant use is not advised as it could cause thermal cracking Do not stop the machine with the tool in cut - this will result in tool breakage. Make sure the machine and setup is rigid and solid; chatter will cause chipping. Tool height when boring should be slightly above center; tool deflection will put the tool on center. Do not contact the tool to a hard surface prior to the machining process - this will cause chipping.

Guidelines for PCD

(Ideal for non-ferrous materials)

Higher speeds minimze tool buildup. Depth of cut should not exceed 70% of PCD tip length. Use of coolant will reduce heat and improve surface finish. Do not stop the machine with the tool in cut - this will result in tool breakage. Make sure the machine and setup is rigid and solid; chatter will cause chipping. Tool height when boring should be slightly above center; tool deflection will put the tool on center. Do not contact the tool to a hard surface prior to the machining process - this will cause chipping.

CBN and PCD tipped solid carbide boring bar minimum bore options starting at 0.120" CBN and PCD tipped indexable boring bar minimum bore options starting at 0.220" All CBN and PCD tipped boring bars have premium submicron carbide bodies and a precision ground flat CBN and PCD tipped indexable inserts are sold separately CBN and PCD indexable inserts are available for triangle or diamond shaped left or right-hand bars

CBN APPLICATIONS APPLICATIONS

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Pumps

HARD CAST IRON

Make sure the machine and setup is rigid and solid. Chatter will cause chipping

Impellers Shafts

Tool height when boring should be slightly above center. Tool deflection will put the tool on center.

Engine Blocks

SOFT CAST IRON

Brake Rotors

Do not stop the machine with the tool in cut. This will result in tool breakage.

Transfer Housings Pinion Gears

Coolant use is not advised as it could cause thermal cracking.

Shafts

HARDENED STEEL

Bearings

Do not contact the tool to a hard surface prior to the machining process. This will cause chipping.

Turbine Disk

SUPER ALLOYS

Turbine Blade

PCD APPLICATIONS APPLICATIONS

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Carbon Fiber Bicycles

Make sure the machine and setup is rigid and solid. Chatter will cause chipping.

Carbon Fiber Car Parts

ABRASIVE NONMETALLIC

Tool height when boring should be slightly above center. Tool deflection will put the tool on center.

Ceramic Gas Turbine Parts

Do not stop the machine with the tool in cut. This will result in tool breakage.

Ceramic Bearings Fiberglass Bodies for Cars and Boats

Use of coolant will reduce heat and improve surface finish.

Aluminum Rims

Do not contact the tool to a hard surface prior to the machining process- this will cause chipping.

Aluminum Spools

NONFERROUS MATERIALS

Brass Fittings

Higher speeds minimize tool buildup.

Precious Metals Depth of cut should not exceed 70% of PCD tip length.

Presintered Tungsten Carbide

AS THE DOC DECREASES THE FEED RATE CAN INCREASE SCT PCD tools and inserts are excellent for continuous cutting of a wide range of non-ferrous and non-metal materials. The products are precision ground for machining to sub-micron finishes with maximum tool life. PCD allows for higher cutting speeds with longer tool life.

18

A Legacy of Excellence Scientific Cutting Tools, Inc. was established as an innovative cutting tool manufacturer based upon the simple marketing concept of providing customers with superior products, competitive prices, and uncompromising customer service. SCT entered the cutting tool manufacturing field with one driving goal—to deliver unprecedented value to our customers. Over the years, SCT has developed new tool lines and refined existing product groups. Through aggressive research and development, SCT has the capability of developing specialized tools for specific customer projects, as well as the ability to modify existing stock tools to meet individual customer needs. Although 53 years have passed since SCT first opened its doors, our fundamental reasons for being in business have remained the same as those originally established by company founder Stan Christopher. Our commitment to quality control, unparalleled craftsmanship, and customer satisfaction continue to set us above the competition. Adopting a company philosophy of “pride in our people means pride in workmanship,” has proven to be the spark to ignite our ability to provide the best value in the industry. SCT’s team of specially trained machinists, operators, engineers, and our customer service team all take pride in dedication to their craft and producing the highest quality goods for our customers. SCT has an excellent reputation as a manufacturer of an extensive line of cutting tools including thread mills, port tools, cavity tools, indexable and solid carbide boring bars, threading tools, coolant through tools, and more. We stock coated (AlTiN) and uncoated versions of our products and all carbide used in our processes must pass stringent quality tests. SCT’s commitment to only working with the latest CNC tool and cutter grinders, and turning centers as well as dedicated employees using forward-thinking technology has allowed us to produce top-end cutting tools using quality materials at competitive market prices.

New Addition: The CRT Holder Our CRT holders are made from high quality heattreated steel, come with a black oxide coating and are engineered to allow for better coolant penetration deep into the bore, reducing temperature at the cutting edge. The adjustable back stop is infinitely adjustable rather than fixed. This allows all of our single point tools to be set at their ideal maximum bore length, allowing for superior performance without chatter or other performance related issues. The CRT holder delivers a 360° flow of coolant to all of SCT’s single point tools. Use with our qualified boring bars and/or qualified threading tools for quick change machining.
