AIM OF THE PRESENTATION • To assist DOCTORS to recognize Obesity as a CHRONIC PROGRESSIVE DISEASE IN its OWN RIGHTS! • Create awareness about Medical and Surgical treatment of obesity in Kenya • To introduce Types of Bariatric surgery • To announce statements of the last IDF congress . One of the most important announcement was: “Some types of diabetes are well treated by Bariatric Surgery- lap-banding and many patients are recovering from DM Type 2”.

Definition of Obesity by WHO Obesity- is an excessive deposit of fat in subcutaneous area, omentum and other tissues of the body.

Obesity is actively discussed by WHO, IDF, IOTF, CMA, CME, IBSA) IDF congress Stated, Much, 2011: “Obesity is now being increasingly seen not just as a risk factor, but as a Chronic Progressive Disease in its own right, “Obesity is one of the major drivers of the global diabetes epidemic”.

- By 2009 - 9% of Kenyans had extra weight - By 2010 - 20% of Kenyans had extra weight - By now almost 50% of Kenyan population has extra weight

WHO statistic of 2011 shows - 65% on Americans and - 50% of Europeans have extra weight

Obesity has been declared by the WHO as an epidemic disease of the 21st Century.

By 2025 about half of women population and 40% of man in

developed countries will be suffering from obesity!

There is prevalence of hypertension in individuals with higher BMI BMI
