The Five Senses Last week, Owls children excitedly used their senses to explore their beautiful environment. Textures such as "sticky jelly", "sloppy spaghetti" and "cold baked beans" were described with delight by some of our lovely inquisitive Owls! Drumming sticks on natural-found objects in Forest Schools helped the children to explore and distinguish between, the different sounds around them. The children brought in many different scents to explore and create 'scent bags'! Some children even participated in a Science colour experiment using pipettes and food colourings to explore 'sight' while others enjoyed a food tasting experiment which involved "yummy chocolate buttons!" What a fantastic week we all had using our five senses!

Woodlarks Campsite Benefit From Barfield Friends’ Fundraising

Pupils from Barfield School in Farnham were delighted to present a cheque for £5,000 to local charity Woodlarks Camp Site. Woodlarks Camp Site was founded in 1931 to provide camping facilities for people with disabilities. Over the years, the volunteers who run Woodlarks have worked to provide facilities that enable specialist schools and organisations which support the needs of people with disabilities to camp, knowing that they will enjoy an outdoor experience. Visitors can camp under canvas, or if necessary, sleep indoors and access the modern welfare facilities that enable all aspects of an individual’s care needs to be met with comfort, safety and dignity. The money was raised by Barfield Friends, the school’s Parent and Staff Association, which organises events for the benefit of children and their families, with the aim of having fun, fostering the family ethos of the school and raising money to benefit the school as well as local charities. The Friends had nominated Woodlarks to benefit from some of the money raised during the year and the money raised came from the Fun Run held in June and also from the auction held on the evening of the "Tropical Ball", when nearly 100 people enjoyed the sounds of a steel band, Brazilian dancers, a 3 course dinner and trying out a surf simulator. The Friends were delighted to present the cheque for £5,000 to Nick Richards. Nick said, “I am totally amazed at how much has been raised. This was way more than we had hoped for. The generosity of the friends and families at Barfield has been exceptional. The funds shall go towards fully funding a new computerised dosing system for the therapeutic outdoor swimming pool as well as towards a new pool side shelter. Due to the high level of needs, many of our campers are unable to access swimming until they come to Woodlarks. We have all of the equipment to enable safe access in and out of the pool as well as new completely accessible changing facilities right next door to the pool. We would like to thank everyone involved in raising this fantastic amount. Your support really is very much appreciated by everyone here at Woodlarks ”. Sandie Wilkinson

Poetry Workshop On Friday of last week, a selection of children from Years 4 and 5 attended a Poetry Writing Workshop for Able Writers. Famous poet, Brian Moses, treated the children to some personal recitals of his own works, shared a raft of tips and skills and set them several writing tasks throughout the day. The children learned a great deal, including how to use repetition to create rhythm in poetry and how to extract the extraordinary out of ordinary memories to create strong images in writing. While all the children who attended the workshop deserve congratulating on their hard work ethic and excellent conduct throughout the day, I must commend Jessica Spencer Godfrey in particular, for writing a spectacular poem about her memories on the Isles of Scilly. Brian Moses was really impressed with her detailed description, remarking that her poem really made him want to be there. So approving of her work, was he, that Brian has chosen to publish Jessica’s poem on his blog. Please look out for it on his website (it will be uploaded in the next few weeks) and see a preview of the poem which follows below. Following strict instructions from Brian Moses (so I can’t possibly disobey) I shall be putting my feet up and have a cup of tea next week, while I watch the Year 5 attendees of the workshop deliver a lesson to the rest of the class. During the lesson, the trainee teachers will be sharing with the rest of the class some of the tools they took away from the workshop such as how to create include Rhyming Couplets, Repetition, Rhythm, and most important of all, Imagination. I am looking forward to resting my voice and legs - look out for some examples of their work in next week’s Newsletter! Kerrie Daunter

I remember The Scillonion, seeing dolphins leaping on the horizon, sharp grey fins of the sunfish and waving to Land’s End. I remember the happiness of when we were there, choosing my room and settling in, exploring the island. I remember opening the gate to an amazing land with blue swashing waves and soft yellow grains. The smell of salt and making a new friend. I remember holding the amethyst jelly, wobbling it in my hand with the clear edges like flexible glass and running up the steep grains to show everyone my find. I remember the vast jumps of The Ribb seeing dappled seals and holding a By The Wind Sailor. I remember the dark green light passing through the leaves of Tresco Abbey Gardens, the bright colours and tropical scents filling the air. I remember watching the racing boats pass by with their bright colours and floating and swimming in my wet suit at Bryher. I remember Great Bay at Saint Martins, flopping my feet like a ballerina trying to stay upright. I remember the amazing taste of Troytown ice cream from Saint Agnes. These memories will stay in my mind forever. By Jessica Spencer Godfrey

Reception Trip To The Tilford Rural Life Centre The children in Reception had a fantastic time at The Rural Life Centre and learned all about how life was lived in the past. They used washboards, dollys and the mangle to wash the clothes after pumping their water from the pump. They learned all about old farming techniques and had a lesson in the Old School House where they did their work on slates. They loved playing in the old playground and with the Victorian toys. The staff at The Rural Life Centre commented on how fantastic the children had been. A big thank you to all the mums who helped on the trip. Mel Lewin

Wednesday 12th October Mixed Challenge Match v Barrow Hills U12 (H) Barfield 2 2 Barrow Hills Aeroball Barfield 29 24 Barrow Hills Football Barfield 3 2 Barrow Hills Log Race Barfield 1 :48.9 1:48.4 Barrow Hills Canister Challenge Barfield 6 minutes 5:50 Barrow Hills Well done to all involved. Steve Hollands Challenge Match v Conifers U11B (H) Barfield 2 2 Conifers After competing in 8-a-side football, aeroball and noughts and crosses, Barfield found themselves one point behind going into the last activity, the Spiders Web. After all time penalties where added to the final time, Barfield clinched this activity to tie the match. Well done boys. Mark Gore Netball v Hawley Place U11 (H) Barfield 4 8 Hawley Place Wow, what a match! The standard of this game was extremely high, with all the girls really upping their game to compete against a very talented opposition. Unfortunately for us, their Goal Defence was superb (she plays for a Netball Club out of school), and any slight weaknesses on our part were seized upon by her. Robyn did her very best against her, but her dominance was what won them the game. Evelyn was on target for all shots, but luck was definitely against her as the ball rolled round the ring, or bounced off again, only to be whisked away by the tall Hawley Place GD. Well done girls. A superb effort, and the final score is not indicative of how close the match actually was. Hawley Place chose India Steer (Defender) and Robyn Singleton (Attacker) as Barfield Players of the Match. Ros Milton Football v Churcher’s U10 (A) Barfield A 0 7 Churcher's College A Barfield B 1 1 Churcher's College B Return match Barfield A 0 7 Churcher's College A Barfield B 0 4 Churcher's College B Our U10 2 x 7-a-side football team travelled to Churcher's College Junior School for this fixture. We knew this would be testing for us as they have over three times more boys in Year 5 from whom to select their players. All of our boys battled hard against a well drilled opposition and we decided to play each team twice. Well done to our boys who gave 100% in effort and never allowed their heads to drop. The results do not truly reflect the effort demonstrated by all our players. Ray Taylor

Pupil Sporting Success Well done to Harry who completed the Wellesley Rushmoor 10k run at the weekend in 1 hour 14 minutes. Harry was the youngest entrant and this was quite an achievement for an 11 year old!

Well done to Evie who competed in her last Southern region downhill ski race at the weekend and ended up finishing 8th overall (out of 20) for the season in the female Under 10's category. Next year Evie will be skiing as an Under 12 at national level.

Well done to Harrison and Alexander for their Triathlon TV debut! The boys competed in this event in Stoke-on-Trent which was being televised as this year’s European City of Sport. Not only did the boys take part and do very well, but also their mum, dad and granddad (aged 70! ) also took part. With 3 generations participating, the boys were worthy of being filmed throughout the event and taking part in a televised interview!

Cothill Educational Trust Concert On Thursday 13th October 2016, Ms Lynch and I spent a pleasant evening in Winchester Cathedral, listening to the choirs of 5 of the other schools which are members of the Cothill Educational Trust (CET). Each school performed 2 pieces on its own, with all the choirs combining for 4 others, and the evening was rounded off with everyone in the Cathedral belting out "Jerusalem". As you may know, the schools in England which comprise the CET are located all around the country, so those connected with each school had to come from far and wide. It was a very enjoyable event and was also an opportunity to meet with the Heads of the other schools. Ms Lynch and I were greeted warmly and made to feel very welcome. I enjoyed a chat with the former Conservative MP, the Rt. Hon. Lord Wakeham, who is Patron and President of the CET, and once we had reminisced about our respective times as pupils at Charterhouse - and in his case, also as Chairman of the Board of Governors - he happened to mention that when he was a boy at Aldro, he was awarded his Rugby Colours following a match against Barfield! The planning for this concert had started many months before Barfield joined the CET, so we were not able to be involved this time; however, the next one is likely to be in 2 or 3 years' time and we very much look forward to being a part of it then.
