HiSet™ EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA

Spring 2015

The HiSet™ is a series of five subject tests; Science, Social Studies, Reading, Writing and Mathematics. This test replaces the GED in Maine..

GETTING STARTED

INTAKE AND ASSESSMENT

Students may enter the program at any time of the year. Classes are offered at The Learning Center.

Students meet with staff to provide basic information and determine needs. The CASAS assessments in reading and mathematics are given to determine current educational functioning levels. These are used to make class assignments and often allow a student to begin taking official HiSet™ practice tests. Certain skill levels must be demonstrated before the actual tests can be taken.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Students can test at 18 years of age. Testing at 17 is only permitted if a student provides documentation of having been out of school for a minimum of one year, has been home-schooled for at least the past year, or provides a letter of acceptance by a college, a letter of commitment by an employer, a court order or proof of enlistment in the military upon reception of the diploma. These are considered “documented immediate needs” for a waiver approved by the state of Maine. Testing accommodations are available for students with current documented disabilities.

CAREER PATHWAYS WORKSHOPS Planning future goals is an important part of the educational process. Students are assisted in this through a series of workshops and presentations. Weekly Career Pathways workshops are provided to explore career options, identify your learning style, develop an education plan and obtain general orientation information. Individual appointments are also available. Additionally, the HiSet™ identifies areas where students are college and career ready.

HiSet™ PREPARATION CLASSES

HiSet™ preparation classes are held throughout the semester for those students that need instruction in specific areas. Please call 941-6315 for more information.

FRENCH FOR BEGINNERS, PART I

Spring 2015

French for Beginners is a multi-faceted course that is designed to help beginning students of French attain an acceptable level of proficiency in its four basic language skills… listening, reading, writing and speaking. Students begin to converse, in simple sentences, from their very first class session. This introductory program makes language acquisition a natural, personalized, enjoyable, and rewarding experience. The combination text-and-workbook used provides all the elements for a one-year course. It gives students an extensive opportunity to work with and learn basic structures of the French language. French for Beginners also uses a second textbook, Berlitz Essential French. It provides simple and basic conversational training and classroom activities through visually focused topical contexts that students can easily relate to their own experiences. Students are asked easy-to-answer questions that require them to write and to speak about their daily lives, express their opinions, and supply real information. An audio CD reinforces lessons from the Berlitz book. Learning online 24/7 through French websites is also available. Dennis Michaud has a M.A.T. in French and is a Maine certified teacher.
