Baltic Sea - international waters

BKB06L, BKB10L Baltic Sea, Little Belt and HELCOM Risk Area [DE/DK] ___________________________________________________________________ Details of all known facts Geographical location  MVG BKB06L | 54,81 °N; 10,19 °E (WGS84) | ~ 4.180 ha1.  MVF BKB10L | 54,81 °N; 10,17 °E (WGS84) | ~ 27.040 ha. Area is located south of the Little Belt. The water depth here is about 30 m. The sea floor is covered with silt and mud of a thickness up to 8 meters. The sedimentation rate in this area achieves from 1 to 2 mm / year. This would accumulate in 40 years to a thickness of about 8 cm. Due to the very soft, muddy sediments it is expected, that the dumped munitions has sunk into the sediment. The surface flow is predominantly northwest and south-east directed at a speed of 0.5 knots to 1.0 knots. Military history In the last days of the WW II two vessels of the German Navy with chemical warfare agent munitions were sunk in the entrance of the Little Belt. Dumped Munitions In addition, it is assumed that in the same period in these area also conventional munitions has been dumped. These munitions where stored on board of the large number of German navy and refugee ships and has been dumped on behalf of the Command of the Allied forces. In addition to that one must reckoned with unexploded Allied bombs from air raid attacks. 69,000 tabun grenades and 5,000 t of bombs and shells filled with Tabun and phosgene where dumped by the German Wehrmacht in the last days of WW II in 1945. The tabun 69,000 shells in the vessels were recovered in 1959/60 and immediately redumped in the Gulf of Biscay. It can be assumed, that the remaining munitions is here about 5,000 t bombs and shells, filled with Tabun and phosgene. The estimated warfare agent net quantity is estimated about 750 tons. Salvages/recovery Salvage operation of the vessels took place in 1959/1960 and the tabun filled grenades where secured in concrete and redumped in the Bay of Biscay. In the autumn of 1971 and spring of 1972 the German state EOD service and the German Federal Armed Forces scientist squad ordered to take samples of the remaining CWA munitions (phosgene and Tabun munitions: 28 bombs and 15 shells) salvaged the south exit of the Little Belt. Local risks In dumping site at the Little Belt only phosgene and Tabun munitions was dumped. Both agents are rapidly degraded in seawater: Even at 0 ° C aqueous phosgene solution is a 1% completely decomposed within 20 seconds. The half-life of tabun in salt water at a temperature of 7 ° C is about 5 hours. Neither durable arsenic warfare agents nor Zählost (thickened Mustard gas) where dumped in this area. Therefore, there is neither a posing risk related to released CWA for neither beach activities nor even for the marine environment or for fisherman here. As part of the 1971/72 carried out sample campaign in this area sampling salvage water and sediment samples were taken in the immediate vicinity of the recovered ammunition. No traces of warfare agents could be detected. There is a low risk of catching single remaining shells during fish trawling activities, but the probability can assumed as low because of the high sedimentation rate and the thick layer of slit (up to 8 m). In addition to that, the predominantly dumped thin walled bombs and shells might corrode relatively fast. Although the fishing activity is high in this area consequently no accidents related to CWA with fisherman became public since than. In recent decades, only two empty 2

CWA bombs were caught in Fischer nets in the year 1992. Sampling salvage during the years 1971-72 showed, that most of the munitions (28 bombs and 15 shells), had sunk about 50 cm into the mud, was destroyed by corrosion and contained no warfare agent anymore. Precautionary measures The location of the dumping ground is marked in official sea charts.

Military history After numerous witnesses warfare agent munitions were dumped on the access shipping ways of the Baltic Sea port of Wolgast to the dumping site east of Bornholm. The quantities and the exact locations are unknown. Dumped Munitions It is assumed, that in the Bornholm Basin approximately 35,000 t bombs and shells filled with mustard gas, and Zählost (thickened Mustard gas), arsenical warfare agents (Clark I, Clark II, Adamsite), possibly with N- Lost, phosgene, Tabun, chloro3

acetophenone and Zyklon B where dumped. In addition to that - prompted by the Soviet military administration in Germany (SMAD) - in the years 1947 to 1948 200 t of CWA where dumped by the GDR authorities in the years 1952-1965. Salvages/recovery

Local risks Since no information on the quantities and type of the dumped munitions on the transport routes are present, only a rough estimate can be made of the potential hazard: The warfare agent composition is probably similar to the composition in the Bornholm Basin. So it can be expected a threat to the fisheries by hydrolyzed Lost, building lumps under a rubber like skin. The relatively shallow water area slightly increases the likelihood of catches of munitions or lost– lumps. On the other hand, the probability for catches is less because the density per unit area will be less than in the designated dumping site. Precautionary measures

Baltic Sea off Schleswig-Holstein

General Description In the whole area of the coastline of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has to be reckoned with munitions remnants of WW II. This area was for example in the field of operation of the Allied Air Force, which conducted both massive bombing raids and fighter-bomber attacks on Harbors and ships till 05 May 1945th. In Eckernförde Bay for example torpedoes were developed and tested by the German Navy Research and Development Center (Torpedo Versuchsanstalt - TVA) and later calibrated in Neustadt Bay by the Submarine Torpedoes School with shots for training purposes. Here an increased number of torpedoes can be expected.

Military history The district of Mürwick was the location of many important institutions of the German Navy. Between the landmarks Fahrensodde and Kielseng also a number of bunkers had been built into the high cliffs of the fjord. At the Northeast exit of the Flensburg harbour in the so called “Camp Kielseng” was a stockpile for munition located since the beginning of 1945. This camp has beared although the later in the Little Belt dumped bombs with the warfare agent phosgene and grenades (calibre 10.5 and 15.5 cm) with the warfare agent Tabun. On June 14th, 1945, a blast took place in the camp, which claimed 53 casualties and has probably thrown munition into the water. This needs to be researched at a later stage. Dumped Munitions From the whole area a variety of unintentional munitions findings are known. Some of them will be either ammunition that was scattered into waters of the fjord by the explosion, but some objects can although be dumped overboard or was lost during loading. Salvages/recovery Reported ammunition findings have been always subject to immediate recovery actions of the Schleswig-Holstein EOD - Teams. Thus the exact information of all findings needs to be researched at a later stage. An extensive recovery action took place when the German radio broadcast station NDR reported in 2001, that a large amount of depth charges have been found directly on the beach. As a result, around 4,500 dangerous munition items were recovered from the water, including 33 depth charges. Local risks In the priority area a munitions dump site is marked in the sea charts. However, the concrete area suspicious to contain munitions is present even after the recovery of the area. The presence of chemical weapons munitions with Lost, Phosgene and Tabun is unlikely, but cannot be excluded. Precautionary measures 5

An individual risk assessment taking into account any kind of munitions findings is recommended prior any construction action on the seafloor.

Military history In the area of the Gelting Bay German naval ships have gathered and anchored before and immediately after the end of WW 2. Among these units were a total of 46 submarines of different classes. During the nights from Mai 4th to May 5th and from Mai 8th to 9th 1945 the German crews sunk the ships in the bay. In addition, the Gelting Bay was target of airborne ground mines. Dumped Munitions As the submarines were partly equipped with munitions to use for war purpose the on-board munition had been also dumped in this area. Some of the munitions remains on board the other part was found next to the boats on the seafloor. The variety of the dumped munitions ranges from combat torpedo munition through flak shells (up to caliber 3.7 cm), signal munitions and decoys (Bolde). Source: Submarine Museum Cuxhaven, 2011 Salvages/recovery It is memorized by the members of the explosives disposal squad SchleswigHolstein, that extensive munitions recovery took place in the past. No written reports are found so far. 6

Local risks Especially on the western shore of the bay the presence of explosive ordinances is likely. Precautionary measures Construction action on the seafloor should not be should be conducted without a careful and proper risk assessment of the area with suitable methods. Divers should be instructed about the particular explosive ordnance risk before diving in this area.

Military history There is no information about the historical context known so far. Dumped Munitions According to Kinder, 1984, primarily cartridges and grenades of "small caliber" were dumped by the units which retreated into the Schlei Fjord and Gelting Bay at the end 7

of the WW 2. Because of the in this area also anchoring speedboats and submarines, the previous dumping of torpedoes and depth charges cannot ruled out. Salvages/recovery A few aerial moored mines have been found in this area. There are no known reports about row material recovery after the WW 2. No munitions findings became known in recent years in the area of the dumping ground. Further research is recommended. Local risks

Military history According to the known information’s a several of naval vessels were sent to the area from the ports of Kiel and Eckernförde after the ceasefire. Among these units were so-called artillery carriers. The reports suggesting, that the supply of soldiers took 8

place via the towns of Kappeln and Arnis. Later on the removal of the munitions from these units was organized via the pier in the village Sieseby, municipality Thumby, today county Rendsburg-Eckernförde, two nautical miles to the southeast. Munitions findings have been reported frequently to the Schleswig-Holstein EOD squad from this area.

Dumped Munitions There is no information about the sort and quantity of the dumped munition in this area. Salvages/recovery There have been a lot of munitions salvage actions in the area of Karschau and at the pier in Sieseby as well. To estimate the amount of recovered munitions further research is necessary. There had been no new reports about munitions findings in recent years. As part of the renewal of the bascule bridge in Kappeln between April 2000 and December 2002 WW 2 ordnance were repeatedly found. These findings were disposed of within the context of ad hoc missions. Local risks The presence of other munitions cannot be excluded. The employees of the EOD Squad are of the opinion, that there is no longer an accumulation of explosives and there is no higher risk from explosives above the generally expected level. Precautionary measures The dumping ground is marked in official sea charts.

Military history During WW 2 the area was used as a military practise and exercise area. Sea charts of that time pointed out, that there was ammunition used or might have remained in that area. Munitions dumping took place in that area on behalf of the crews from the surrendering German navy ships in May 1945. The nowadays restricted area is used since 1956 by the German navy for training purposes. It is also used as a training area for dealing and testing of pre-assembled military explosives.

Dumped Munitions According to Children, 1984, primarily cartridges and grenades of "small caliber" were dumped in this area by the German units which later on retreated into the Schlei and the Gelting bay. The previous dumping of torpedoes and depth charges cannot be ruled out because of the here anchoring speedboats and submarines. This area is a training area for the German navy. Until a few years ago there was also a training area for navy pilot units in use. Salvages/recovery No munitions findings became known in recent years in the area of the dumping ground Schönhagen Reef. Is reported that in this area the past few moored mines were destroyed by explosion. Local risks The focus of the present danger is related to ongoing military training operations of the German navy. Precautionary measures The munitions covered area has remained restricted and is therefore prohibited for public use.

Some of the prisoners survived, the causalities dead were taken ashore and buried there. The munitions havened been recovered completely. Hence munitions findings occurred repeatedly. Dumped Munitions Mostly depth charges and anti-aircraft munitions was dumped. Salvages/recovery In an additional recovery action in the late 1980th more pieces of the munitions were recovered and dispose. Parts of the wreck are still visible on the beach. Local risks Especially in the area of the landmark Bookniseck dynamic processes in the surf zone lead to abrasion effects on the wreck and the munitions casings as well thus far they still exist. 11

Military history A location east of today’s village of Danish-Nienhof was used as a training facility for German aerial defence soldiers. Allied aerial photographs show different gun carriages and a tower. The common training procedure was the aimed shooting at aircraft towed air targets towards the open sea. It must be assumed that due to the duration of use of the facility and the large number of required teams of antiaircraft crews significant amounts of munitions have been fired from this location. The exact location of the so called impact area is unknown. There are no reports of munitions findings in the area of concern so far. There have been no reports of munitions findings in the sea area of suspect so far. Dumped Munitions It must be assumed, that the suspected munitions will be duds from anti-aircraft guns. Typical in use were grenades from 2 to 10.5 cm. Because of the fired munitions the sharp shells would be unlocked and therefore very dangerous in case of manipulation. Salvages/recovery There is currently no information about former recovery available. Local risks 12

Further archive research and survey of the area is necessary to narrow down the risk area. Only on the basis of current investigations in the area a risk assessment is possible. Precautionary measures Currently no action required.

Military history It is assumed that here both, ammunition from bunkers and depots of the Navy, as well as munitions off board of German Navy ships returning home to Kiel was dumped in the area. According to Kinder, 1984 up to 18,000 metric tonns maritime munitions and depth charges could once been dumped there. In the post war years in particular moored mines from this area have been washed up on the beach of the Kiel Fjord. A so far unnoticed shift under water may be assumed for the vicinity of the original dumping ground. Dumped Munitions

13

According to Kinder, 1984, up to 8,000 Torpedo heads, many depth charges and up to 10,000 Mines of various types have been originally dumped after the war. From these amounts the quantities of the till 1954 recovered munitions by fishermen etc. has to be deducted. Recently some 130 German torpedo heads and submarine- and moored mines were found in very different states of corrosion. Further, there are indications that below the originally dumped mines scattered naval artillery shells might be located. Salvages/recovery In the fifties, the Hamburg-based company Porr received an approval to salvage munitions from the dumping ground for the purpose of decommission and raw material recovery. Up to 15 boats Electromagnets were used for that purpose. For postprocessing on land a decommission workshop at Laboe (Jägersberg) was established. In 1954 a serious accident happened and caused three dead workers. It is assumed, that a torpedo exploded by self-ignition. The work was stopped immediately. In preparation for the 1972 Olympic Sailing Games in Kiel-Schilksee a systematical salvage operation was undertaken to prevent risks to the regatta courses. At that time, a significant number of large explosive devices were detected and destroyed. The therefore used method was blasting destruction and low order blasting as an explosive technical destruction method. As a result, a relevant quantity of explosives (TNT) was floating in the water and ultimately washed ashore. At the beach of Schönberger Strand a greater cleaning action of the authorities became necessary. In 2005 divers reported accumulations of submerged munitions under water. As a result 2006 30 mines and torpedo heads had been destroyed by blasting by German EOD teams. This destroying method was heavily criticized by the German NABU. Consequently the method has to be adapted to fulfill the German Species conservation law. Since then 20 large explosive devices were removed in an environmentally friendly way, specially using the bubble curtain method to fulfill the task under acceptable risks for the employees of the EOD teams. Local risks In 2006 it was stated, that the ammunition dumped is not safe to handle. Precautionary measures Since 2006, two restricted areas are set up and since 2009 extensive EU Species protection regulations allow only blasting of dumped munition if it is unavoidable necessary to eliminate present danger. The chemical pollution of the water is monitored. On the of The state government website www.munition-im-meer.de informed about the ongoing measures and the results.

Military history The Kiel Fjord has been a military hot spot since the "fleet policy" of the German Empire has formed the Kaiserliche Marine in the early 1900. This applies for the German Navy ships and the affiliated units and facilities on shore as well. The city of Kiel has been the target of Allied air raids. In particular the shipbuilding yards on the eastern shore of the city have been extensively bombed. A result of this use is also the load of the Kiel Fjord and adjacent land areas with explosive ordnances of various kinds. Several military installations were located among the steeply rising hills on the east bank of the Kiel Fjord. The in direct translation so called "munitions pier" or "Navy pier" is an up to date used depot for Navy munitions. Dumped Munitions Conceivable dumping includes all types of naval munitions, including incendiary and illuminating munitions. Salvages/recovery In this area, smaller quantities of ammunition have already been cleared. Local risks It can be assumed, that explosives from munitions might washed ashore and be encountered and collected by beach visitors. Precautionary measures 15

The location of the dumping ground is marked in official sea charts. Due to the current use as an area of professional and recreational boating a survey for dumped munitions is recommended. Therefore The search in the deeper sediment for submerged munitions is consider of particular importance.

Military history The military training facility Todendorf is formed out of the former German army (Wehrmacht) fortifications based near the town of Hohwacht. On decision of the British Military Administration the area was used together with the United States of America as an anti-aircraft firing range after the Second World War. After establishing an American headquarters the "firing range Todendorf" was renamed in "NATO Antiaircraft firing range Todendorf ". Between 1956 and 1962 an intense training activity with up to 260 shooting days per year and up to practicing 2,000 soldiers could be observed in the area. The NATOstatus was canceled on the1st of July 1962. The given new name was "training facility and Antiaircraft firing range Todendorf ". The German army training range (“Truppenübungsplatz Putlos”) was established for the Wehrmacht in 1935. Since the end of WW 2 the area was under British military administration until 1957. Since then it is used by the German army. Due to the long shooting ranges at sea, the training facility offers the possibility to use nearly all weapons systems of the army. . 16

Dumped Munitions At the end of the shooting ranges (impact area), various types of ballistic munitions is lying on the seafloor. Some of the munitions is training munitions that contains no explosive charge. Salvages/recovery There is currently no information about former recovery available. Local risks The main danger in this area results from the training exercises itself. The present parts of munitions and munitions parts can result a spatially delimited burden of the marine environment. Precautionary measures The area is marked as a risk area in the official sea charts. During shooting training operations public warning is conducted via signal towers in addition onshore. The urgency of recovery actions has to be judged by the Schleswig-Holstein EOD squad on their experience and the experience of the German navy. Due to the fact that there are only very rare information about former dumping operations and former findings further archive research is recommended. That includes also the archive of the Schleswig-Holstein EOD squad.

10.2.3.5.1. Munitions contamination of Lübeck Bay The Bay of Lübeck has been used for testing and training purposes for various units of the German Navy and the Luftwaffe during WW 2. Based in Neustadt / Holstein a training facility for U - Boot crews trained submariners until 1945. Furthermore, new constructed submarines were directed to the Baltic Sea to conduct final tests and crew training. That includes torpedo shooting too. By the ending of Gdansk Bay as a training Area most of the training has shifted into the Bay of Lübeck and the Western Baltic Sea. The German air force used the maritime area increasingly intense for the training of Torpedo pilots (Großenbrode) after closing down the Torpedo training facility in Grosseto (Italy) and Riga (Latvia) from October 1944. During the last weeks of the WW 2 the marine area from Fehmarn to Lübeck was a preferred target for Allied aircraft Attacks. These air raids were conducted with heavy weapon power to the ships present and became known e.g. as the "Hell of Staberhuk" and the “CAP ARCONA” - and “Thielbek disaster”). At the end of the WW 2 weapons and munitions (Small arms, grenades and depth charges) from the ships were dumped spontaneously in the Bay of Lübeck. 18

In the cities of Lübeck and Mölln were not only munitions storages located. Munition was also manufactured here. After WW 2 the airfield Lübeck Blankensee was used by the allies as a central stockpile and assembly point for captured munitions. According to Kinder, 1984, the Lübeck port facilities were used for scheduled dumping operations by order of the allies. Therefor according to his information originally for dredged material constructed barges were used. Because of this method, "ordnance reefs" were formed which partly arose up tightly below the water surface. This creates a new danger for shipping. It is also reported that an explosion during the dumping operations caused two causalities. Based on the present finding situation, it is assumed that there was also the "hand over hand" dumping over the rail of smaller vehicles common. Therefor the EOD squad finds a lot of munitions on the access routes to the dumping grounds in the Bay of Lübeck. This situation can not to be explained by accidental losses. The access routes are therefore marked as munitions suspected areas. Besides war munition in this marine area also training munition and testing weapons were found. The determinations of the specific peculiarities of the findings are difficult to make. The conservation status of the munitions from the Bay of Lübeck is ranging from "almost factory fresh" up to "completely corroded". The condition is often depending on changing conditions of oxygen content, abrasion and sedimentation. This marine area has always been a main focus for explosive ordnance recovery. Like in the Kiel Bight “munition Fischer" had been active. From 1953 to 1955 the company Eisen und Metall AG, Hamburg, has recovered munition. Like in Laboe the dangerous activity has to be stopped after the accident in the Kiel bight. The official state EOD squad continued the munitions disposal and salvage work on the mumps of bombs with the chartered vessel "Rainer Falko". The event-driven ordnance salvage continued into the 21st century. Since a search for chemical waste in the Lübeck bight was conducted in 2006 the also found conventional munition became public. This leads to new efforts for recovering the munitions. Since then several thousand pieces of munition and dangerous objects are salvaged dangerous and disposed of safely on land. A few very dangerous objects have been blown up. According to Kinder, According to Children, 1984, parts of the dump sites in the Bay of Lübeck are covered with blast furnace slag fromthe blast furnace plant Lübeck.

Baltic Sea off Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania The EOD – squad of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (MV MBD) uses a geographic information system for recording and documenting explosive ordnance contaminated areas for several years. The GIS contains all information from different sources about the contaminated areas. Furthermore, all emergency operations in case of new findings, the results of conducted technical survey, risk assessment for tender preparation and the results from findings after analysis of aerial photographs are included in the database to ensure complete documentation of known information. The documentation consists of the GIPS area chart number (FIRPINr.), the designation of the area, description of the already documented or suspected ordnance as well as their origin. In addition, the size of the area is marked. The classification is made after one of the categories proclaimed in item 5.2 of the official "Work Help ordnance" (see. Glossary). The listed contaminated areas in the coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are areas with different types of load factor and stress levels:   

Dumping grounds Shooting practice areas Polluted coastal areas where also ordnances can be expected to found in shallow waters 23

 

Suspected areas where bombs are dropped into water after air raids aiming on land targets Documented shipwrecks with ordnance

Documented is always is the currently known current state of assessment. All changes (new discoveries, the development of new sources, investigations performed / salvages) lead to a revaluation and if necessary to an adjustment of the data (e.g. change in the boundaries of the contamination, correction of the expected ordnance, change of the category). Even in the area of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania coastal waters ordnance contaminated areas are documented. All existing knowledge derived from documents of the former German Democratic Republic and from the memories of eyewitnesses. It is assumed that at least partially further information is available in archives. About the amount of dumped quantities currently no reliable information is available. Information about the type of dumped ordnance can currently only based on conclusions from previous findings. A complete survey of the coastal waters has not taken place so far.

Military history The area of concern is part of the peninsula bug, which were used for military purposes until 1991 (please refer also BRU18S). A military aviator station was built here in 1914. The entire peninsula was used as a "Aerodrome bug" in an exclusively military use since 1935. Dismantling and demolition of infrastructure were carried out after the Second World War. Targeted reforestation of open spaces created by the Soviet Military took place (1946-47). A military dormancy period follows. The recent military use began in May 1963. The department of Dranske / bug for the 6th Flotilla of the People's Navy of the GDR was formed. Because of the munitions contamination the southern cape of the peninsula (Südbug) remains unused. The here established restricted area is seldom visited by human. In 1990 the German Navy took over the speedboat base, but use it only till 1991. The areas had been included in a conversion program and will in future be used as a recreation area and nature conservation. Dumped Munitions The known by EOD squad Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania known munitions contamination results from military use. For example: The demilitarization after WW2 (blasting / burial / Dumping of remaining munition stocks, the possibility of unexploded ordinances/Bombs after blasting). The whole area is about 9 km², mostly located on land of the peninsula. Only narrow strips off the shore line are included in the contaminated area. The expected ordnance range includes German munitions (Aircraft munition caliber weapons onboard 1.3 to 2 cm, German concrete bombs, training bombs, explosive bombs and mines from destruction blasting) and weapons of Soviet Military in particular exercise Bombs and artillery shells, caliber 2.3 cm. Salvages/recovery Currently no information is available. Local risks The category 43 "ordnance load - recovery required" arises from the threat of the freely accessible exposed ordnance on land. Military history Military facilities are based on the island since the second half of the 17th century. First reports of a military use of the strategically valuable located island are known since the year 1428th. Since the island was sold to the Prussian Ministry of War in 1849 till the German Navy abandoned the facilities on 31 March 1991 the military use of this location has dominated. At the end of WWII the existing facilities were mostly destroyed. Dumped Munitions In addition to the contamination with unexploded ordnance from the attacks during the World War II it has to be reckoned with all known forms of explosive ordinances from many decades of military use. Military history The EOD squad Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (MDB) lists under the combined area "Peenemünde" the areas the use of the former "Experimental Station of the German Wehrmacht 'Peenemunde' "(1936 - 1945) and the" test site of the German Luftwaffe 'Peenemunde-West' '(1938 - 1945), the 1945 to 1952 as a Soviet naval and air base and from 1952 to 1990 as Naval Base of the 1st Flotilla and from 19611990 as the airfield of "fighter pilot Squadron 9" of the GDA NVA. Enclosed is furthermore the area which was target of the allied air raids against both German experimental facilities which stretches up to the shore line. Dumped Munitions Expected ordnance are allied bombs up to 1.000 lb., German grenades caliber from 2 to 10.5 cm as well as missiles and missile parts (steering bombs, Gleittorpedos). Expected can be also legacies of the both experimental stations (both Parts of Fi 103 ("V-1") and “Aggregat 4 ("V-2”) as well as other test models. Since the allied forces air raid targeting Peenemunde in August 1943 single bombs can be expected. In addition the area was used for target training for Air Forces of GRD and Soviet Union. Even such ordnances are possible. Due to the location in front of Peenemunde and sporadic discoveries is also a possible dumping ground of conventional munitions assumed. However no increased discoveries occurred so far. Salvages/recovery Currently no information available. 44

Local risks In recent years repeatedly people on vacation during beach walks mistake amber with white phosphorus in this area (Chunks white phosphorus with additives were collected). These phosphorus chunks caught fire by self-igniting. Precautionary measures The categorization 4 "ordnance load - recovery required" arises from the threat of the onshore partly freely accessible and exposed ordnances. The owner of the peninsula (Institute for Federal Real Estate) has still restricted the asses offside the Link road to the village of Peenemünde for safety reasons. A separate survey and risk assessment of the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea has not taken place so far. Additional Information: Public media intending to highlight the context of White Phosphorus released by corrosion from incendiary bombs on the seabed and washed ashore. If beachgoers collecting the small lumps mistaking them as amber and get seriously burned after selfignition of the poisonous chemical. This is wrong from an expert perspective: The during RAF air raid on August, 17th to 18th 1943 ("Operation Hydra") used British INC 30 lb. incendiary bombs have had an inertia detonator, triggered by the delay to the bomb body on impact on the water. This ejected the active charge with the white phosphorus on the terminus. This Phosphorus has fallen on the beach or in the surf and extinguished there. Now it get rinsed free by waves or currents and possibly also shifted by ground swell to the drift line. It will not be being transported by any natural force from deep water areas to the beach.

Military history The area includes the area of the former German airbase Greifswald-Ladebow. The previously documented contamination with explosive ordnance is resulting from military use, the demilitarization after WW II (blasting / burial / dumping of German munitions stocks on retreat, the possibility e.g. remaining unexploded ordnance / bombs after Soviet blasting operation after WW II). The main part of the contaminated area is located ashore. Dumped Munitions The expected ordnance range includes German infantry munition, anti-aircraft gun munition in calibers 13 mm to 3.7 cm, bazookas and practicing bombs. Salvages/recovery In 2003 a German bomb (SC / SD 50) was found on the beach and disposed of. During the survey for the Nord Stream pipeline in the area of the coastal waters east and northeast of Greifswald several weapons and munitions parts were found and recovered. Apart from training objects as anchor chairs for exercise mines of the GDA NVA (Russian type) training bombs from the period of World War II were found (guided missiles) and other pilots launched munitions. Local risks It must be assumed that other munitions parts both wartime and GDA NVA parts are still present in the area. Since the training objects are quite equipped with pyro – and / or smoke-technique, this area must be at least seaward considered “munitions suspected” area. A risk also arises from partly freely accessible, exposed Ordnance onshore. Precautionary measures The categorization 4 "ordnance load - recovery required" arises from the threat of the onshore partly freely accessible and exposed ordnances. A separate survey and risk assessment of the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea has not taken place so far. 49
